The Stomach
The Purpose of the Stomach
Back to contents
1. Stores the food we ate
2. Breaks down the food into a liquidly mixture
3. Mix with Enzymes which is chemical that breaks down food.
4. Slowly empty that liquidly mixture into the small intestine.
The stomach stores the food we eat and breaks down the food into a liquidly
mixture.
How Does The Stomach Work
Once food enters the stomach through the oesophagus, it reaches the
stomach, then the acid in it breaks up the food.
The Large Intestine
Back to contents
The Purpose of the Large Intestine
Back to contents
The large intestine, or large bowel, functions mainly to absorb water from
the undigested food back into the blood. This makes the faeces more
solid.
It also absorbs vitamins made by the bacteria which live in the large
intestine.
How Does The Large Intestine
Work
By contraction of its muscular walls the food mass is sent forward and, as it is
carried along, some of the secretions from the intestinal lining, bile and the
pancreas helps break it down
Stomach Cancer
•Early
•Indigestion or a burning sensation (heartburn)
•Loss of appetite, especially for meat
•Late
•Abdominal pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen
•Nausea and vomiting
•Diarrhea or constipation
•Bloating of the stomach after meals
•Weight loss
•Weakness and fatigue
•Bleeding (vomiting blood or having blood in the stool), which can lead to
anemia
•To find the cause of symptoms, the doctor asks about the patient's medical
history, does a physical exam, and may order laboratory studies.
Symptoms
Back to contents
stomach Cancer
Treatment
Like any cancer, treatment is adapted to fit each person's
individual needs and depends on the size, location, and
extent of the tumor, the stage of the disease, and general
health. Cancer of the stomach is difficult to cure unless it is
found in an early stage (before it has begun to spread).
Unfortunately, because early stomach cancer causes few
symptoms, the disease is usually advanced when someone
finds they have it. Treatment for stomach cancer may
include surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy.
Back to contents
How to prevent it?
Back to contents
Doctors cannot always explain why one person gets cancer and another
doesn't. However, scientists have studied general patterns of cancer in the
population to learn what things around us and what things we do in our
lives may increase our chance of developing cancer
Some of the risk factors for cancer can be avoided, but many cannot. Both
smoking and inheriting specific genes could be considered risk factors for
certain kinds of cancer, but only smoking can be avoided.
