Xtrem Gospel is keen to hear from anyone who
might be interested in writing articles or reviews
for us. All of our contributors work on a volunteer
basis, which means some write articles each week,
whilst others only have time to write every couple of
months, or less.
If you’re interested in writing an article or review for
Xtrem Gospel, here are the basics of what we look
for:
Article length: 500-750 words.
Topics: Xtrem Gospel writes for Christians, but we
are also aware there are many non-Christians visiting
our site. We aim to have a variety of articles which
address the questions and concerns of modern Chris-
tians, while also endeavoring to help non-Christians
understand the truths of the gospel. Some articles are
straight theology, whilst others are more topical. Take
a look at the articles already on the site, you’ll get the
idea.
Before taking the time to write your article or review,
send us an email to editor@xtremgospel.com, and let
us know what you are interested in writing about. It
would be good for us to know a bit more about you,
and chat about your ideas. Not all articles written
by our contributors actually make it on to Xtrem
Gospel but the more time we have to chat about it
beforehand, the more likely it is the article will be
published.

Cobhams Asuquo (real name Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo) is a Nigerian- born
musician with an enviable track record in (music) production, writing, and
singing. Previously signed to Sony/ATV UK publishing as a songwriter, Cob-
hams, is also the CEO of Cobhams Asuquo Music Production (CAMP); a music
label and production company that serves as a home to Bez and Stan Iyke. He
has also in his repetoire, extensive production work for numerous other notable
Christian and secular artistes for the past 12 years.
Cobhams ventured out from the producers’ seat and into the vocal booth in
2011, to put some of his most loved songs into an inspiring, uplifting self-
published contemporary Christian album. The first single of the album is called
Ordinary People.
Ordinary People is a testament to the latent power in the common man. In this
song, Cobhams Asuquo calls to everyone to give to the best of their ability in
the daily journey of life.
This is a message delivered straight from the heart of one who knows; Cobhams
was born blind and has achieved all he has by sheer determination, willpower
and faith in God.
‘…We are all ordinary people with ordinary desires, demands, strengths and
expectations: but we are all capable of doing extra-ordinary things…” Cobhams

Xtrem Gospel had the opportunity to track down and throw few questions to The “Mukulu
Mukeke” and “Wonder” crooner, Izzy. The US based Nigerian artist recently relaeased another
dance track, “Rababa” with a very catchy afro tune. Here is our Exclusive Interview with Izzy
24 25
www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com
Who is Izzy? (A brief about you)
My name is Israel Odebode, popularly known as Izzy.
I hail from Osun state and was raised in Ibadan, Oyo
state, the third in the family of 3 boys, born in Ogbo-
moso, Oyo State on December 19th , 19xx. I had my
primary education in Oritamefa Baptist Nursery and
Primary School, Ibadan Oyo State and high school
education at The International School, Ibadan, Oyo
state Nigeria. A young man of God, producer and
gospel recording artist, ready to take the gospel of
Christ anywhere I find myself, through music. I love
diversity in genres of music (although I love afro-
gospel the most).
Is music a career to you or a ministry or both?
I see it as both. A career because I most likely will
find myself doing music full-time and having other
branches of music business e.g. having a music
school, renting out musical equipment etc.; and a
ministry because I see it as a calling from God and I
obeyed the calling.
What type of music do u do?
I call it Afro-Gospel.. (laughs)
Do you play any instruments? Which one(s)?
Sure. I play the drums and keyboard.
Is your family musical?
Well, all of us (children) play at least one musical
instrument.
Tell us about the genesis of your launch into mu-
sic?
It all started from my childhood, I started with play-
ing the drum-set at the age of 7, but could officially
call myself a drummer at the age of 10..(laughs). It
has always been a passion from childhood. I always
loved to be around music. I started production at the
age of 15. I produced several artistes (both secular
and gospel). At this point I was not an artiste yet,
I was just into music production. I had a studio to
myself. I eventually became a full-blown artist at the
age of 20. At this time, God had arrested me, and I
left all those secular stuff and became strictly gos-
pel. While in college, I was in a gospel group called
K force. I was the music director and an artiste. In
2012, I moved to the United States, I joined a Gospel
music group called ‘Unchained’. It was just 2 of us,
and we released a mix-tape album. I then became a
solo artiste and released my solo album in 2013 titled
“My Desire”. That has been the journey so far. Can’t
wait for the next move of God.. hahaha
What are your fondest musical memories?
I remember when I will take different cans in the
house (at the age of 7), scatter them around, and start
acting like I am playing a full drum-set. It was always
fun then.
Being a Nigerian in the Diaspora, how prominent
is the Gospel Music outside Nigeria and particular-
ly how celebrated is Nigerian Gospel music outside
our shores?
Well, generally, Gospel music in the United States is
very prominent. But talking about African Gospel
music, I will say it is just beginning to emerge and
fit into the style. We thank God for the wisdom He
is giving us (the Nigerian artiste and African Gospel
artistes in general)
Which musician(s) has/have inspired you or still
inspire(s) u?
American artistes: Tye Tribett, Donnie McClurkin,
Israel Houghton, Don Moen, Da’Truth,
Nigerian Artistes: Kenny K’ore, Nathaniel Bassey,
Uche Double double
Tell us about your latest single ‘Rababa’
Wow!!! Hmm… Rababa, so far, has been receiving
a tremendous audience and massive airplays and
reviews. All glory to God. The inspiration just came
when I was at home listening to the beat, and I was
thinking of what I could use to get people’s attention.
God has always helped me to discover catchy chorus
and tune that people can always sing along with. The
“Rababa” video has also been receiving good com-
ments (to the glory of God). By the way, for those
who need an explanation to what ‘Rababa’ is, it sim-
ply means “Give Honor” and of course, we are giving
honor to our King, Jesus.
Is there an album in view? How soon?
Definitely. I am strongly depending on the grace of
God for this album. It is going to be awesome. Great
collaborations, good music, good message. Over 15
tracks. Let’s say it should be coming out first quarter
of next year 2015.
Do you perform in public?
I perform in public. I minister at Christian events
ONLY. Churches, Concerts, Christian weddings,
Christian Birthdays etc.
Do you play for dances? Step-dancers?
Well, not too sure what you mean though, but I also
D.J at events. I am also a Gospel DJ.
How do you handle mistakes during a perfor-
mance?
There is always a time you make mistakes on stage.
But you only learn by correcting those mistakes
when a next time comes. So sure, I have mastered the
art of managing mistakes on stage and being able to
correct those mistakes off-stage so it is not repeated
next time.
Do you get nervous before a performance?
I have always learned how to be bold while facing
any crowd (regardless of the number) to minister. I
used to be slightly nervous in the past though, but as
time went by, I got more confident on stage due to
consistent practices/ ministrations that I had to go
for. Like they say “Practice makes perfect”.
How often and for how long do you practice?
As often as possible. I could practice for the whole
day if possible. I can also be in the studio the whole
day if possible.
How do you balance your music with other obliga-
tions - mate, children, job?
Well the only other obligation for me for now apart
from music is ‘school’. And I will say it has only
been by the grace and wisdom God has granted me.
Sometimes I ask myself how possible it is for me to
do music and still go for a masters degree at the same
time. But with God all things are possible.
Where do see yourself in the next 5 years?
I see myself touring the ‘whole’ world from country
to country, spreading the Gospel of Christ through
music.

The multinational mega corporation Pepsi is sup-
porting Christian Music by featuring Christian
artistes on their limited edition cans.
For the first time in history last year, Pepsi supported
Christian music by displaying a handful of Christian
artists and their messages of hope on the brand’s
popular cans.
Toward the end of 2013, the Winter Jam Tour and
Pepsi MidAmerica joined forces for one of the largest
Christian music marketing initiatives in the history
of the beverage industry.
Pepsi decided to help spread positive music after be-
ing the sponsor of the K-Love Fan Awards. K-LOVE,
the leading Christian radio network in the United
States, with a weekly listenership of over 13 million,
followed that up by launching the “Christian Artist
Can Panel.”
Each Christian artist involved with the project was
featured on three million cans of soda (12 million
total). Each of these cans included a link to get a free
download by that artist. The artist’s featured on the
can were Francesca Battistelli-Diet Pepsi, Matt Ma-
her- Dr. Pepper, Matthew West- Pepsi, and TobyMac
on Mountain Dew.
When announcing their sponsorship of the K-Love
Fan Awards, Pepsi MidAmerica’s President and COO
Lee Crisp said, “We are proud to sponsor such an
amazing event with such a positive meaning.”
“These Pepsi cans were originally intended to quench
thirst but now we realize they’re able to quench a
deeper thirst…a thirst of the soul,” Crisp said of
making the decision to promote the gospel message
by publicizing Christian artists on their cans.

I do not define success
Its His field, His game, His rules
He is the umpire of the game
The judge in the race
The referee of the match.
He alone defines what success is
My soul is troubles within me,
Why?
Because I can’t seem to see
I can’t see those things I have hoped for
The things that are the measure of success for me
I define it by what I see
He defines it differently
He has promised grace and favor
He has promised the Land…
Faithful is he who has promised,
Faithful is he who has called….
I refuse to be troubled any longer!
My soul, wake up, praise the Lord your maker
For he is good and his mercy endureth forever!
Shallom!

I am a new creature
Old things are passed away
Behold ALL things- I mean EVERYTHING is new
The Lord leads and directs my path
Never again will I direct my path
Never again will I be confused
Because my God is not the author of confusion
He never does anything without revealing it to his
sons
The Spirit of God dwells in me
He takes what is of the father and reveals it to me
Now that I am led by the spirit of God
I am a SON of God
Let no man trouble me
For I bear the mark of Christ
I am a joint heir with Him
He will make my way prosperous
Whatever I lay my hands on
He will prosper
Wherever the sole of my feet steps
He has given as an inheritance
Oh my soul
Stay thou upon the Lord
Wonder not away from His presence
He has promised to go before me
To open doors before I arrive
To fill my treasury with bountiful harvest
Why wont I praise the Lord
My soul sings and shouts for joy
The Lord my God is in and with me
Praise the Lord
I am a partaker of His presence!
Shallom!!!

THE TRIALS OF A CONVERT; MY RACE
AGAINST THE STORM
On her knees she cried and prayed for breakthrough
from the fear of national prejudice; a dreadful trepi-
dation that has imprisoned her courage, work liberty,
and the free will to marry. From her home through
the golden street of Kuala Lumpur to her work place,
she leads a triad-life in a virtuous masquerade. Her
life course is bound by the laws and jurisdictions of
a community that has compelled on her the ‘practice
of Christianity’ in secrecy. Unfortunately, her close
colleague is currently charged for the crime of apos-
tasy, alas, her fear looms as she prayed unto God for
strength to hold on to the old rugged cross. These are
the trials of Maria, a 25year old Malaysian Christian
covert who lives in Kuala Lumpur.
Maria’s story is one of the numerous challenges new
Christian converts battle worldwide. Regretfully, the
reality of living with an imminent fear of disapproval
by our parents, relatives, and sometimes community’s
threats of expatriation from one’s land has led some
of us into looking back and wondering if it’s worth it
to continue racing against the stormy wind.
Like Maria, I grew up as a Muslim in an Islamic
community in West Africa, where my childhood was
marred by the inculcation and assimilation of basic
Islamic virtues. As a teenager, I was enrolled into an
Islamic school where I had finished the recitation of
the whole chapters of the Quran. Despite my up-
rightness in the practice and defense of the Islamic
faith, I had always felt a choking sense of incomplete-
ness; I started asking myself questions concerning
my fate after death. Back in my high school days, I
made many Christian friends, and funnily my pair
mates thought I was a Christian. Badly, I was get-
ting into trouble with my Islamic studies’ teachers as
my performances in Arabic and Islamic studies fell
beyond limit. Every Muslim teacher that knew my
names started asking questions and monitoring my
steps.
Throughout my years in high school I was just an
empty vessel that was occupied by all sorts of oppor-
tunistic contents; a fragile and confused soul, flung
to and fro by workers of iniquities. For me I didn’t
understand the term ‘purposeful living’, although I
was doing fairly well in school.
In my final years in high school, some Christian
brothers came up to me and talked about Jesus
Christ in a very special and uncommon manner, they
thought me the practice of Christianity in secrecy.
I was presented a New Testament bible and was
frequently followed up. Amidst the fear that people
would discover my new diversion in faith, I attended
fellowships and bible studies in sanctuaries. Gradu-
ally I grew in understanding, and the concept of life’s
purpose was becoming clearer not until I graduated
from high school.
Running the Christian race after high school was
much more difficult than I ever envisaged, because
this time I was only a fresh high school graduate liv-
ing under my parent’s nose. My activities were con-
tinuously scrutinized; a deliberate surveillance was
kept on me to make sure my Islamic virtues weren’t

lost. I lost contacts with my Christian folks, and week
in week out the number of embargoes placed on me
increased; the worst was the restriction of my move-
ments on Sundays. I had wondered how many of my
Muslim folks had seen me with ‘fellowship friends’
and reported me to my parents, nonetheless I felt
there was nothing worse than my parents disowning
me if they knew I was a Christian! I had my small
New Testament bible which I could only study few
times when everyone else was not at home. As my
days at home got tougher, I prayed to God to see me
into college on time so I can get enough freedom to
serve him.
In the epistles of Paul, I learnt that holding unto our
Lord Jesus Christ in trying times is more than a thing
of hope for a breakthrough, it should rather be with
faith and absolute trust in his commandments and
promises; ‘that the trial of your faith, being much
more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it
be tried with fire (persecution from parents and rela-
tives), might be found unto praise and honour and
glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ’ 1peter 1:7. ‘Not
that we have dominion over your faith, but are help-
ers of your joy: for by faith ye stand’ 2 Cor 1:24.
Unfortunately for me the storm took over my racing
boat as my faith in Christ dwindled, I allowed myself
to be distracted by the temporary circumstance of
hardship. My few months at home suddenly turned
to turbulent years in the world of unbelief. I lost the
will to pray and study the words of God as chances
came, and was thrown back to those years in my life
that were marred by confusion and uncertainty. It
was in this period that I got admitted into the uni-
versity. Although the freedom I prayed for seemed
to have arrived, yet, ironically I wasn’t serving God; I
was rather struggling in the wilderness of iniquities.
The persecutions I feared from people are now com-
ing from the devil himself as I allowed him access
into my life. I tried my hands on all forms of sins.
Before then, I used to think the only reason why sin-
ners couldn’t stop sinning was because they enjoyed
sinning, on the contrary each time I fornicated I
sobbed in tears and feared God was never going to
accept me back, the flashes of my misdeeds couldn’t
stop tormenting me on several occasions at night
clubs. I didn’t know how to fall back on track, and by
my own hands I have persecuted myself and preju-
diced my will to serve God one more time.
For no one was born without sin, and the reason
why Christ came to this world is to save sinners from
perishing; he has exchanged his precious blood for
our salvation, therefore whosoever confesses his sins
and accepts Christ as his lord and savior shall be
saved from the bondage of sin. I was able to return to
the Lord again and then I realized that God’s love for
me is pure, I realized he never wanted me to die in
sin but to fulfill his purpose for my life. Day after day
come challenges as a Christian convert but the prom-
ises of God have held me strong. Psalm 27:1 ‘the lord
is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The
lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be
afraid. It is worthy of importance to know that there
are trying times in the race of Christianity, and these
are the times the devil intensifies his operation, with
the aim of sending new Christian converts back into
darkness, but I, Maria and other Christians all over
the world need to hold on steadfastly to God’s com-
mandments and promises with faith, because these
trials are temporary challenges so we must not allow
them to separate us from the love of Christ. ‘For in
time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion, in
the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall
set me up upon a rock’, psalm 27:5.

As much as a lot of us want life to be fun-filled, as
much as we desire to have and enjoy the brighter side
of life, for as long as we want the best out of life, we
must come to terms with the fact that challenges and
pressure will come our way.
Challenges and pressure are part of life but the at-
titude with which we face them matter a lot and
often determine what becomes of us thereafter. Just
like the title of the book “tough times never last but
tough people do.” My mathematics Teacher back in
secondary school puts it this way, “may your way be
rough.” Almost everyone in the class looked at him
disdainfully… is this man here to teach or to curse …
(laughs) but he took time to explain himself which
was accepted by some while others remained indif-
ferent.
The truth about life is that we will always face chal-
lenges- financial, relationship, career, spiritual, physi-
cal/health etc. these things put some form of pressure
on us and how we handle them or react during this
period/time (when we are under pressure) deter-
mines what we get out of such situation. Below are
five ways I handle pressure. They have worked and
still working for me:
Music: One of the things I do when I am under
pressure is to listen to inspirational songs or songs
that will “distract” me from the problem and make
me focus on the solution(s).
Heavy Sighing/Breathing Out: This has also worked
for me, whenever I am under intense pressure, I try
as much as possible to breathe out heavily and blow
out some air. This reduces the pressure I feel within
and relives me to a large extent.
Keep Calm: Taking some time to think and pre-
tending as if there is no pressure is another “secret”
on how to handle challenges and pressure. Learn to
be calm in the midst of pressure so as to make the
best/right decision. Be calm and learn to smile in the
midst of pressure, I do this a lot. But know where to
smile o…!! (laughs)
Be Positive: Being positive in spite of pressure is an
attribute of champions a friend and father says, “…
challenges are the breakfast of champions.” Thanks
dad, these words have worked and are still working
for me.
God’s Help: Above all, never underestimate the
power of the Greatest One, God. He is always will-
ing to help, all you need to do is to acknowledge you
need Him and, call for His help. Hmm…He’s the
present Help in need.

THINK ABOUT SEX ALOT -by
YOUTH WITH A DIFFERENCE
Think About Sex a Lot …
Q I’m 14, and I think about sex a lot. Am I normal? Does God
say it’s wrong to think about sex, even if you’re only
thinking about it in the context of marriage?
A Thinking about sex is very normal at 14. And as long as your thoughts are healthy, I don’t know any reason to believe
that God disapproves. Sex is, after all, a wonderful part of his creation, one of the great joys and adventures of life. So
it’s natural and normal to be curious about sex and to look
forward to sharing it with your future spouse.
It’s also normal for teenagers to think about sex more than most people. Right now, your body is changing and you’re
discovering many new feelings. You’re getting prepared physically and emotionally for an exciting
future. It’s like you’re in training for the big event: Marriage. It’s not always easy to wait. But anyone who’s trained for
something important knows that the best way to get through the training is to stay focused on the
prize at the end. Sex is so terrific, it’s worth the tremendous effort and patience it takes to make sure it’s everything God
intended it to be: the physical expression of a lifelong commitment.
Of course, you can think about sex in very destructive ways, too—ways that become obsessive and distract you from
real living, and ways that are disrespectful or hurtful to yourself
and others. To keep your thoughts about sex from moving in a dangerous direction, there are a few things you can do.
Avoid movies, music and magazines that promote sex between unmarried people or stir up lustful feelings in you. Find
a Christian friend you trust and can talk to about your thoughts.
Read what the Bible has to say about sex (check out Matthew 5:28; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8). And
ask God to help you keep your thoughts healthy and honorable.
My Teacher Touched Me …
Q One day my science teacher asked me to stay after class. He touched my face, and told me I was beautiful. I smiled
and said thanks, but I had no clue what this was leading to. Then his hand left my face and went to my shoulder. He
said, “I want you to know that I love you.” I said OK. Then he began touching me all over. I told him I had to go. Before
I left, he kissed me on the forehead. This is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. I NEED HELP!!! I feel so weird
about this. I don’t know if I liked what he did or not. In one way it felt strange because he’s my teacher, but in another
way it felt good. What should I do?
Please help.
A You should go immediately to your parents, your pastor, or another adult you trust and tell what happened. You are
going to need their emotional support and help in taking the next step—reporting your teacher to the authorities, like
the school principal and/or the police. What your teacher did is illegal. It’s also a terrible thing to do to someone. If he
did it to you he is probably doing it to others. He needs to be
stopped.
Next, you need to talk to someone, like your pastor or a Christian counselor, about how you feel. You are already expe-
riencing strange feelings about this, and those feelings may continue for a long time. You really need someone compas-
sionate and understanding to help you sort through your feelings. Also, find one or two Christian friends to talk and
pray with you.

The Power Of A Song – by John Paculabo (from: We are
Worship)
[A year before he died, our friend John Paculabo wrote
this brilliant article. We miss him, and we’ve still got a lot
to learn, but pieces like this help...]
‘In good times and bad times people sing… to hide their
fears, to express their joy; to endorse their beliefs, we
carry songs with us throughout our lives and they reflect
the character and the substance of our soul’.
Music is not an accident that mankind suddenly stumbled
across. Music is as old as the universe itself. It is as vital
to us as the food that we eat and the air that we breathe.
From the dawn of time man placed music at the very
center of community life, playing a leading role in cer-
emonies and rituals. Music is an ancient gift. Long before
Gutenberg was even an idea man sang.
It’s not surprising therefore that at the very beginning of
creation we find music woven into the very fabric of the
universe. For every creature, every thing that lives and
breathes and moves has a sound that proclaims its creator.
From the birds of the air to the beasts of the field, all of
creation sings to its Creator. Even the universe itself sings;
every planet, every sun produces radio waves that when
converted to ‘fit’ our ears becomes audible sound (hear if
for yourself atyoutu.be/_bnU6K1y468 - or Google ‘earth
song sound’).
There are approximately 200 million suns in our galaxy,
many with orbiting planets, and there are approximately
200 million galaxies in the universe. If every single sun
and planet has its own song, surely God has created an
interstellar symphony beyond compare? Isn’t it amazing to
think that in every moment of every day the universe it-
self proclaims the glory of God? What’s more, how incred-
ible is it to think of this song being made for an audience
of one, entirely for His own pleasure?
Songs aren’t just reserved for the planets. They become
milestones in our lives, denoting our seasons, marking
those big occasions, bringing hope in times of sorrow, joy
in times of goodness, courage in times of danger. They
inspire us, stirring us into action and exerting a most
powerful influence on us all.
If the songs that we sing become our mantras, then the
music we consume throughout our lives – especially our
early years – affects and shapes our thoughts and actions.
The music that shapes us delivers so much more than pure
pleasure; it directs almost everything about us – including
our beliefs.
Therefore the songs we carry with us throughout our lives
become important resources – especially for us who call
ourselves Christians. Our songs help renew our faith daily
and songs that are full of biblical content and substance
remind us of who God is and what He has done. Songs
can shape us by bringing to mind God’s promises to us,
helping heal our soul, renewing our mind and refreshing
our spirit. Songs become the curriculum we carry in our
hearts every day of our lives.
So songs become our teachers, our ever-ready source of
scripture, our constant companions on life’s journey, our
daily provision that we hide in our hearts available at a
moment’s notice with perfect recall.
It’s hard to believe that two billion people entered the
new millennium unable to read or write their own name,
for these people one of the only learning resources open
to them are the songs that they sing. But an inability to
read or write is no barrier to the power of the song. John
and Charles Wesley evangelized a whole nation on the
strength and substance of their songs – at a time when the
common people of England were largely illiterate.
34 35
www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com
The Wesleys travelled the countryside on horseback, but
today songs of truth carrying the word of God travel on
the airwaves and digital highways, crossing borders and
oceans at will, ignoring the rule of governments, feeding
hungry hearts in lands that are dry and thirsty.
God calls us all to worship him, and the truths contained
within our songs of proclamation and adoration help
bring us to that place of worship, the place where God can
speak and the place where we can listen.
I remember meeting a local pastor in India who recount-
ed and amazing story. He loved to hike and he would
often drive himself miles to remote regions in Southern
India just to walk in the wilderness for days on end.
On one such occasion he came across a small village that
did not appear on any map. On entering the village he met
an old lady well into her nineties and as they began to talk
he realised that she was a woman of faith.
Her Christian walk began when she was 12 years of age.
Two missionaries had appeared in her village, but within
two days the local authorities forced them to leave. But in
those 48 hours the missionaries had relayed the Christian
message to the village.
The old lady explained that she gave her life to God back
then, and went on to become a midwife. Every baby she
delivered she prayed for, and not once did any of the ba-
bies she delivered died. It was a miracle in rural India, and
so she gained a reputation as a woman who God favoured.
Many came to faith because of her.
When the pastor asked what books she had read, and
what Bible she owned, she explained that she had never
seen a Christian book or ever owned a Bible. Perplexed,
the pastor asked then how she was able to keep her faith
so fresh in such a remote place. Her reply was simple;
referring back to the missionaries that visited her vil-
lage when she was 12 she explained that ‘they taught me
a song, and I sang it every day.’ For over 80 years this
woman had fed on the good news that those missionaries
had shared, and the song they had taught her. I have no
idea what song it was – and perhaps that’s the point: the
power of the song even extends beyond the arrangement
of words and melody.
Recently my travels took me to the Amazon River in
Brazil, where members of a team from the charity Ray of
Hope had travelled to a remote village. The place was one
of 80,000 untouched villages in the Amazon basin, and we
held an activity camp for kids, but what with Indians be-
ing fun-loving people, many of the adults came also. After
delivering the message of salvation and teaching them a
few simple songs that spoke of the greatness and love of
God, many wanted to become Christians and gave their
lives to God.
We promised to revisit with Bibles and books, but because
of its remoteness it was several months before the team
could return. As we prepared to return some months
later, we began to worry: would their faith have remained
strong? Without Bibles, books or other resources, could
they really have kept going?
We arrived and were amazed to find that not only were
they still ‘alive in Christ,’ but even more of the village had
come to faith. During the months that had elapsed they
were sustained by a simple message and the songs that
they sang.
Nothing can replace the Word of God or provide the sys-
tematic teaching that we find in books, but there’s power
in these songs – real Christ-saving power. For those of
you who write songs, I want you to remember this: scrip-
ture and substance are the hallmark of songs that have
impact and lasting power.

A little boy visiting his grandparents and given his
first slingshot. He practiced in the woods, but he
could never hit his target. As he came back to Grand-
ma’s back yard, he spied her pet duck. On an impulse
he took aim and let fly. The stone hit, and the duck
fell dead. The boy panicked. Desperately he hid the
dead duck in the wood pile, only to look up and see
his sister watching. Sally had seen it all, but she said
nothing. After lunch that day, Grandma said, “Sally,
let’s wash the dishes.” But Sally said, “Johnny told me
he wanted to help in the kitchen today. Didn’t you,
Johnny?” And she whispered to him, “Remember
the duck!” So Johnny did the dishes. Later Grandpa
asked if the children wanted to go fishing. Grandma
said, “I’m sorry, but I need Sally to help make sup-
per.”
Sally smiled and said, “That’s all taken care of. Johnny
wants to do it.” Again she whispered, “Remember the
duck.” Johnny stayed while Sally went fishing. After
several days of Johnny doing both his chores and
Sally’s, finally he couldn’t stand it. He confessed to
Grandma that he’d killed the duck. “I know, Johnny,”
she said, giving him a hug. “I was standing at the
window and saw the whole thing. Because I love you,
I forgave you. I wondered how long you would let
Sally make a slave of you.”
“You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of

Dayo and Jumoke were one of the most popular and
respected couples in their campus fellowship. They
had been courting for over two years and everyone
that knew them felt that their relationship would
lead to marriage after school. One evening after bible
study, because he was travelling the next day, Jumoke
accompanied Dayo to his off-campus residence to
spend some time with him. They discussed at length,
joked, laughed and savoured each other’s company.
They had no idea how quickly time had passed.
Jumoke, distraught at the thought that she won’t
be seeing Dayo for the next two months, expressed
her reluctance to letting him go. In a bid to comfort
her (and himself), Dayo drew her into his arms and
planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. Standing there
in each other’s arms, with Jumoke’s head resting on
Dayo’s chest, they both wished for the moment to
last forever. She looked up to tell him how much she
loved him; and to Dayo, she had never looked loveli-
er. He bowed his head towards her and just like ‘slow
mo’, he kissed her. Jumoke’s eyes widened in surprise
and against all her convictions, she closed her eyes
and felt herself give in. The kiss became more pas-
sionate and hands began to roam where they never
before had.
Jumoke was the first to break away. Dayo was still
trying to process it all. He had never kissed Jumoke
before; she had a no-kissing-till-our-wedding-day
rule. Jumoke packed her things and headed for the
door while Dayo apologized profusely, promising
that it would never happen again. But it did, plus
a little more, a couple of times over. Their bodies
seemed to have a will of their own. Eventually, they
both came to a decision to see their pastor before
they went too far.
Now, here is the question I have asked myself and
others for a really long time, “how far is too far?”
as regards physical intimacy in a relationship. How
do you express your love for your partner ( le boo/
sweetheart/ fiance/ fiancee. The koko is sha that you
Love, Lines and
Boundaries.
guys aren’t married yet) without offending God?
Where this is that line we aren’t supposed to cross
drawn? Cuddling? Petting? Kissing? Smooching?
(Oh, secondary school days), Non-penetrative sex/
outercourse? (I only just knew of the term earlier this
year, like what in the world?). Some say everything is
cool and dandy as long as there is no penile/vaginal
intercourse. I’ve heard different views on what’s okay
and what is not. So, I really had to ask myself, how
far is too far?” Frankly speaking guys, it’s not easy to
maintain physical purity even in a godly relationship,
(abi I lie?). To begin with; is your relationship ap-
proved by God?
I believe that impurity and purity are not separated
by are separated by a fixed point/ line. In his book, I
KISSED DATING GOODBYE, Joshua Harris wrote;
“True love is a direction, a determined pursuit of
righteousness. It all starts in the heart and we express
it in a life style that flees opportunities for compro-
mise.”
Moral purity begins in the heart. Shikena.
As Christians, God has very high standards for us.
Matt 5:28 tells us that by looking at a woman lust-
fully, a man has committed adultery with her in his
heart. The direction of purity begins within. It starts
in the heart, PS 119:11; “Thy word have I hidden in
my heart that I might not sin against you”.
I like the way THE MESSAGE renders Matt 5:27b-
28, it says, “Don’t think you’ve preserved your virtue
simply by staying out of bed. Your heart can be cor-
rupted by lust even quicker than your body. Those
leering looks you think nobody notices – they also
corrupt.” We can’t always control the thoughts that
come into our minds but we can choose those that
we dwell on. We can also help ourselves by not feed-
ing our minds with erotic material; songs, pictures,
books, videos, you know what I’m talking about ;) . I
won’t go into that now.
It’s also important to lay ground rules concerning
physical intimacy with your partner. You and partner
should agree on practical steps to avoid sexual sin.
I’m not talking about seeing how far you can go with-
out having sex. It really isn’t wise to explore bounda-
ries and see how close you can come to the edge. I
like to think of it as someone walking very close to a
high cliff with a crumbling edge and seeing how far
he can go without falling off. Like who does that?
I know there are adrenaline junkies; my apologies,
but honestly, I think everything might not be com-
pletely alright up there. The usual thing is to keep a
distance, a veeeerrrrry safe distance.
Why dont you decide to make the purity of your
partner and yourself a priority? ( that is if you haven’t
yet). Support it practically by deciding where and
when and with whom you choose to be. One hus-
band told me recently, that he and his wife had to
put a little distance between each other a week before
their white wedding even though they already had
their traditional wedding, in other to avoid compro-
mising their good testimony. Another friend shared
with me a story of how one night when his wife, then
fiancée, was visiting, he had to call his friends into
his room and send her home to avoid having sex with
her.
My partner and I have agreed not to talk about some
stuff and read some books until very close to our
wedding so that we do not ‘awaken love before it’s
time’; in addition to the other ground rules we have
laid for ourselves. I’m blessed to be in a relationship
with a Godly man who has told (and shown) me
several times that he values and respects me (and that
includes my body) and my principles.
If your partner doesn’t agree with you, or if they in-
advertently constantly put you under sexual pressure,
(Meeehn, wahala dey) I think it’s time for you to do
some re-evaluation, chec self-discipline k your part-
ner, check yourself too. Sometimes you might have to
gather some guts and ultimately end that relationship
no matter how hard or painful it might be.
Reserve, or willpower sometimes isn’t enough to
keep us from compromise, you need God’s help. My
dear, flee! Pick race when you hear the warning bells
in your heart ring. We have to take responsibility for
our actions and not just heap the blame on the devil.
If you feel you might have compromised your stand-
ards, you don’t have to repeat the same mistakes.
Turn to God, He forgives and redeems. I pray he
continues to keep you and me. Amen
Peace!

down. He was a slim, dark and tall elderly man. Black
sunglasses framed his dark gaunt face. With a walk-
ing stick grasped in his right hand and a dark leather
bound book clutched tightly beneath his left armpit
he advanced slowly towards me. He walked in a
manner typical to those bereft of physical sight, tap-
ping his cane around his immediate perimeter then
advancing with a few cautious steps. I thought it odd
he had no young assistant or any one at all to escort
him. My heart went out to him. I looked around. I
wondered, was I the only one seeing him? Several
thoughts ran through my mind; what was so impor-
tant to bring this man this way despite his condi-
tion? Should I go to him? What should I say? Excuse
me sir, can I be of assistance to you? Would that be
polite enough? See you, won’t you also ask where he’s
headed? Young lady, why are you wasting time, run
and meet this man before he stumbles.
I walked faster towards him but I wasn’t fast enough.
No, he didn’t fall like I feared. Someone had gone to
him, an elderly woman previously seated at one of
the road side shops. She greeted him cheerily, took
the book from him and led him by the hand occa-
sionally leaning in to his ear to say something. They
made a curious sight, two elderly people, walking
down the road, hand in hand. I slowed down my
pace. They walked past me and headed towards a
church around the corner. I rummaged through
my purse and then my jean pockets looking for an
imaginary object, I turned back searching the ground
like what I was looking for had somehow fallen, just
so that I could watch the man a little more. Yes, I can
be inquisitive like that once in a while.
It seemed that he was a well known face at the church
because the members who were around went out to
meet him as soon as they sighted him. The man’s face
transformed almost immediately, his mouth broke
into a wide grin putting on display a set of slightly
discoloured teeth, I could bet that there were laugh
lines beneath those glasses. The church folks offered
their thanks to the woman as she returned. Service
was just about to start. It didn’t look like a special
service was about to hold, just regular bible study. I
knew because I was familar with the church sched-
ule. My mind began reeling with questions again: He
simply came for bible study? how was he going back
home? Where was home? Why go through all this
trouble just to attend service. Wasn’t there church
close to where he lived? What’s your story Mr..Mr..
Mr somebody?
I saw him a couple of times after that, all on church
service days, usually around the same time- some
minutes before 6pm. It seemed to me that he really
did come all this way just to attend church service.
He must really enjoy it. Each time I saw him, I was
tempted to go to him and at least ask for his name.
Still haven’t been able to. Now that I’m writing about
him, I wish I had.
I learnt two things from watching Mr Somebody. The
first – disabilty is a thing of the mind.
The second – Always go to church. Yeah seriously,
I know that with the advent of technology we can
stream live services, listen to or watch messages on
our devices or on T.V. Truth is none of those things
beat fellowship (using the term broadly). So those
excuses like not being in the mood, or wanting to
watch a game or show on T.V don’t hold water.
I’ll end with what Paul the Apostle said, ” Don’t stop
meeting together with other believers, which some
people have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead,
encourage each other, especially as you see the day
(the second coming) drawing near.” Heb 10:25 CEB

  • 12. 22 23 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com Cobhams Asuquo (real name Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo) is a Nigerian- born musician with an enviable track record in (music) production, writing, and singing. Previously signed to Sony/ATV UK publishing as a songwriter, Cob- hams, is also the CEO of Cobhams Asuquo Music Production (CAMP); a music label and production company that serves as a home to Bez and Stan Iyke. He has also in his repetoire, extensive production work for numerous other notable Christian and secular artistes for the past 12 years. Cobhams ventured out from the producers’ seat and into the vocal booth in 2011, to put some of his most loved songs into an inspiring, uplifting self- published contemporary Christian album. The first single of the album is called Ordinary People. Ordinary People is a testament to the latent power in the common man. In this song, Cobhams Asuquo calls to everyone to give to the best of their ability in the daily journey of life. This is a message delivered straight from the heart of one who knows; Cobhams was born blind and has achieved all he has by sheer determination, willpower and faith in God. ‘…We are all ordinary people with ordinary desires, demands, strengths and expectations: but we are all capable of doing extra-ordinary things…” Cobhams Asuquo Artist of the Month @cobhamsasuquo Follow Cobhams on Twitter Xtrem Gospel had the opportunity to track down and throw few questions to The “Mukulu Mukeke” and “Wonder” crooner, Izzy. The US based Nigerian artist recently relaeased another dance track, “Rababa” with a very catchy afro tune. Here is our Exclusive Interview with Izzy
  • 13. 24 25 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com Who is Izzy? (A brief about you) My name is Israel Odebode, popularly known as Izzy. I hail from Osun state and was raised in Ibadan, Oyo state, the third in the family of 3 boys, born in Ogbo- moso, Oyo State on December 19th , 19xx. I had my primary education in Oritamefa Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Ibadan Oyo State and high school education at The International School, Ibadan, Oyo state Nigeria. A young man of God, producer and gospel recording artist, ready to take the gospel of Christ anywhere I find myself, through music. I love diversity in genres of music (although I love afro- gospel the most). Is music a career to you or a ministry or both? I see it as both. A career because I most likely will find myself doing music full-time and having other branches of music business e.g. having a music school, renting out musical equipment etc.; and a ministry because I see it as a calling from God and I obeyed the calling. What type of music do u do? I call it Afro-Gospel.. (laughs) Do you play any instruments? Which one(s)? Sure. I play the drums and keyboard. Is your family musical? Well, all of us (children) play at least one musical instrument. Tell us about the genesis of your launch into mu- sic? It all started from my childhood, I started with play- ing the drum-set at the age of 7, but could officially call myself a drummer at the age of 10..(laughs). It has always been a passion from childhood. I always loved to be around music. I started production at the age of 15. I produced several artistes (both secular and gospel). At this point I was not an artiste yet, I was just into music production. I had a studio to myself. I eventually became a full-blown artist at the age of 20. At this time, God had arrested me, and I left all those secular stuff and became strictly gos- pel. While in college, I was in a gospel group called K force. I was the music director and an artiste. In 2012, I moved to the United States, I joined a Gospel music group called ‘Unchained’. It was just 2 of us, and we released a mix-tape album. I then became a solo artiste and released my solo album in 2013 titled “My Desire”. That has been the journey so far. Can’t wait for the next move of God.. hahaha What are your fondest musical memories? I remember when I will take different cans in the house (at the age of 7), scatter them around, and start acting like I am playing a full drum-set. It was always fun then. Being a Nigerian in the Diaspora, how prominent is the Gospel Music outside Nigeria and particular- ly how celebrated is Nigerian Gospel music outside our shores? Well, generally, Gospel music in the United States is very prominent. But talking about African Gospel music, I will say it is just beginning to emerge and fit into the style. We thank God for the wisdom He is giving us (the Nigerian artiste and African Gospel artistes in general) Which musician(s) has/have inspired you or still inspire(s) u? American artistes: Tye Tribett, Donnie McClurkin, Israel Houghton, Don Moen, Da’Truth, Nigerian Artistes: Kenny K’ore, Nathaniel Bassey, Uche Double double Tell us about your latest single ‘Rababa’ Wow!!! Hmm… Rababa, so far, has been receiving a tremendous audience and massive airplays and reviews. All glory to God. The inspiration just came when I was at home listening to the beat, and I was thinking of what I could use to get people’s attention. God has always helped me to discover catchy chorus and tune that people can always sing along with. The “Rababa” video has also been receiving good com- ments (to the glory of God). By the way, for those who need an explanation to what ‘Rababa’ is, it sim- ply means “Give Honor” and of course, we are giving honor to our King, Jesus. Is there an album in view? How soon? Definitely. I am strongly depending on the grace of God for this album. It is going to be awesome. Great collaborations, good music, good message. Over 15 tracks. Let’s say it should be coming out first quarter of next year 2015. Do you perform in public? I perform in public. I minister at Christian events ONLY. Churches, Concerts, Christian weddings, Christian Birthdays etc. Do you play for dances? Step-dancers? Well, not too sure what you mean though, but I also D.J at events. I am also a Gospel DJ. How do you handle mistakes during a perfor- mance? There is always a time you make mistakes on stage. But you only learn by correcting those mistakes when a next time comes. So sure, I have mastered the art of managing mistakes on stage and being able to correct those mistakes off-stage so it is not repeated next time. Do you get nervous before a performance? I have always learned how to be bold while facing any crowd (regardless of the number) to minister. I used to be slightly nervous in the past though, but as time went by, I got more confident on stage due to consistent practices/ ministrations that I had to go for. Like they say “Practice makes perfect”. How often and for how long do you practice? As often as possible. I could practice for the whole day if possible. I can also be in the studio the whole day if possible. How do you balance your music with other obliga- tions - mate, children, job? Well the only other obligation for me for now apart from music is ‘school’. And I will say it has only been by the grace and wisdom God has granted me. Sometimes I ask myself how possible it is for me to do music and still go for a masters degree at the same time. But with God all things are possible. Where do see yourself in the next 5 years? I see myself touring the ‘whole’ world from country to country, spreading the Gospel of Christ through music.
  • 14. 26 27 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com The multinational mega corporation Pepsi is sup- porting Christian Music by featuring Christian artistes on their limited edition cans. For the first time in history last year, Pepsi supported Christian music by displaying a handful of Christian artists and their messages of hope on the brand’s popular cans. Toward the end of 2013, the Winter Jam Tour and Pepsi MidAmerica joined forces for one of the largest Christian music marketing initiatives in the history of the beverage industry. Pepsi decided to help spread positive music after be- ing the sponsor of the K-Love Fan Awards. K-LOVE, the leading Christian radio network in the United States, with a weekly listenership of over 13 million, followed that up by launching the “Christian Artist Can Panel.” Each Christian artist involved with the project was featured on three million cans of soda (12 million total). Each of these cans included a link to get a free download by that artist. The artist’s featured on the can were Francesca Battistelli-Diet Pepsi, Matt Ma- her- Dr. Pepper, Matthew West- Pepsi, and TobyMac on Mountain Dew. When announcing their sponsorship of the K-Love Fan Awards, Pepsi MidAmerica’s President and COO Lee Crisp said, “We are proud to sponsor such an amazing event with such a positive meaning.” “These Pepsi cans were originally intended to quench thirst but now we realize they’re able to quench a deeper thirst…a thirst of the soul,” Crisp said of making the decision to promote the gospel message by publicizing Christian artists on their cans. source: Breathecast.com Matthew West, Toby Mac and Others Featured on Pepsi Limited Edition Cans Article http://www.xtremgospel.com/category/articles/ BY OLADELE OKIKIOLA · JANUARY 9, 2014

He alone defines what success is My soul is troubles within me, Why? Click to send feedback THE TRIALS OF A CONVERT; MY RACE AGAINST THE STORM On her knees she cried and prayed for breakthrough from the fear of national prejudice; a dreadful trepi- dation that has imprisoned her courage, work liberty, and the free will to marry. From her home through the golden street of Kuala Lumpur to her work place, she leads a triad-life in a virtuous masquerade. Her life course is bound by the laws and jurisdictions of a community that has compelled on her the ‘practice of Christianity’ in secrecy. Unfortunately, her close colleague is currently charged for the crime of apos- tasy, alas, her fear looms as she prayed unto God for strength to hold on to the old rugged cross. These are the trials of Maria, a 25year old Malaysian Christian covert who lives in Kuala Lumpur. Maria’s story is one of the numerous challenges new Christian converts battle worldwide. Regretfully, the reality of living with an imminent fear of disapproval by our parents, relatives, and sometimes community’s threats of expatriation from one’s land has led some of us into looking back and wondering if it’s worth it to continue racing against the stormy wind. Like Maria, I grew up as a Muslim in an Islamic community in West Africa, where my childhood was marred by the inculcation and assimilation of basic Islamic virtues. As a teenager, I was enrolled into an Islamic school where I had finished the recitation of the whole chapters of the Quran. Despite my up- rightness in the practice and defense of the Islamic faith, I had always felt a choking sense of incomplete- ness; I started asking myself questions concerning my fate after death. Back in my high school days, I made many Christian friends, and funnily my pair mates thought I was a Christian. Badly, I was get- ting into trouble with my Islamic studies’ teachers as my performances in Arabic and Islamic studies fell beyond limit. Every Muslim teacher that knew my names started asking questions and monitoring my steps. Throughout my years in high school I was just an empty vessel that was occupied by all sorts of oppor- tunistic contents; a fragile and confused soul, flung to and fro by workers of iniquities. For me I didn’t understand the term ‘purposeful living’, although I was doing fairly well in school. In my final years in high school, some Christian brothers came up to me and talked about Jesus Christ in a very special and uncommon manner, they thought me the practice of Christianity in secrecy. I was presented a New Testament bible and was frequently followed up. Amidst the fear that people would discover my new diversion in faith, I attended fellowships and bible studies in sanctuaries. Gradu- ally I grew in understanding, and the concept of life’s purpose was becoming clearer not until I graduated from high school. Running the Christian race after high school was much more difficult than I ever envisaged, because this time I was only a fresh high school graduate liv- ing under my parent’s nose. My activities were con- tinuously scrutinized; a deliberate surveillance was kept on me to make sure my Islamic virtues weren’t I do not define success! Confessions of a Saved man
  • 16. 30 31 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com lost. I lost contacts with my Christian folks, and week in week out the number of embargoes placed on me increased; the worst was the restriction of my move- ments on Sundays. I had wondered how many of my Muslim folks had seen me with ‘fellowship friends’ and reported me to my parents, nonetheless I felt there was nothing worse than my parents disowning me if they knew I was a Christian! I had my small New Testament bible which I could only study few times when everyone else was not at home. As my days at home got tougher, I prayed to God to see me into college on time so I can get enough freedom to serve him. In the epistles of Paul, I learnt that holding unto our Lord Jesus Christ in trying times is more than a thing of hope for a breakthrough, it should rather be with faith and absolute trust in his commandments and promises; ‘that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire (persecution from parents and rela- tives), might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ’ 1peter 1:7. ‘Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are help- ers of your joy: for by faith ye stand’ 2 Cor 1:24. Unfortunately for me the storm took over my racing boat as my faith in Christ dwindled, I allowed myself to be distracted by the temporary circumstance of hardship. My few months at home suddenly turned to turbulent years in the world of unbelief. I lost the will to pray and study the words of God as chances came, and was thrown back to those years in my life that were marred by confusion and uncertainty. It was in this period that I got admitted into the uni- versity. Although the freedom I prayed for seemed to have arrived, yet, ironically I wasn’t serving God; I was rather struggling in the wilderness of iniquities. The persecutions I feared from people are now com- ing from the devil himself as I allowed him access into my life. I tried my hands on all forms of sins. Before then, I used to think the only reason why sin- ners couldn’t stop sinning was because they enjoyed sinning, on the contrary each time I fornicated I sobbed in tears and feared God was never going to accept me back, the flashes of my misdeeds couldn’t stop tormenting me on several occasions at night clubs. I didn’t know how to fall back on track, and by my own hands I have persecuted myself and preju- diced my will to serve God one more time. For no one was born without sin, and the reason why Christ came to this world is to save sinners from perishing; he has exchanged his precious blood for our salvation, therefore whosoever confesses his sins and accepts Christ as his lord and savior shall be saved from the bondage of sin. I was able to return to the Lord again and then I realized that God’s love for me is pure, I realized he never wanted me to die in sin but to fulfill his purpose for my life. Day after day come challenges as a Christian convert but the prom- ises of God have held me strong. Psalm 27:1 ‘the lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid. It is worthy of importance to know that there are trying times in the race of Christianity, and these are the times the devil intensifies his operation, with the aim of sending new Christian converts back into darkness, but I, Maria and other Christians all over the world need to hold on steadfastly to God’s com- mandments and promises with faith, because these trials are temporary challenges so we must not allow them to separate us from the love of Christ. ‘For in time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion, in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock’, psalm 27:5. Challenges and pressure are part of life but the at- titude with which we face them matter a lot and often determine what becomes of us thereafter. Just like the title of the book “tough times never last but tough people do.” My mathematics Teacher back in secondary school puts it this way, “may your way be rough.” Almost everyone in the class looked at him disdainfully… is this man here to teach or to curse … (laughs) but he took time to explain himself which was accepted by some while others remained indif- ferent. The truth about life is that we will always face chal- lenges- financial, relationship, career, spiritual, physi- cal/health etc. these things put some form of pressure on us and how we handle them or react during this period/time (when we are under pressure) deter- mines what we get out of such situation. Below are five ways I handle pressure. They have worked and still working for me: Music: One of the things I do when I am under pressure is to listen to inspirational songs or songs that will “distract” me from the problem and make me focus on the solution(s). Heavy Sighing/Breathing Out: This has also worked for me, whenever I am under intense pressure, I try as much as possible to breathe out heavily and blow out some air. This reduces the pressure I feel within and relives me to a large extent. Keep Calm: Taking some time to think and pre- tending as if there is no pressure is another “secret” on how to handle challenges and pressure. Learn to be calm in the midst of pressure so as to make the best/right decision. Be calm and learn to smile in the midst of pressure, I do this a lot. But know where to smile o…!! (laughs) Be Positive: Being positive in spite of pressure is an attribute of champions a friend and father says, “… challenges are the breakfast of champions.” Thanks dad, these words have worked and are still working for me. God’s Help: Above all, never underestimate the power of the Greatest One, God. He is always will- ing to help, all you need to do is to acknowledge you need Him and, call for His help. Hmm…He’s the present Help in need. Click to send feed back Five Ways I Handle Pressure
  • 17. 32 33 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com THINK ABOUT SEX ALOT -by YOUTH WITH A DIFFERENCE Think About Sex a Lot … Q I’m 14, and I think about sex a lot. Am I normal? Does God say it’s wrong to think about sex, even if you’re only thinking about it in the context of marriage? A Thinking about sex is very normal at 14. And as long as your thoughts are healthy, I don’t know any reason to believe that God disapproves. Sex is, after all, a wonderful part of his creation, one of the great joys and adventures of life. So it’s natural and normal to be curious about sex and to look forward to sharing it with your future spouse. It’s also normal for teenagers to think about sex more than most people. Right now, your body is changing and you’re discovering many new feelings. You’re getting prepared physically and emotionally for an exciting future. It’s like you’re in training for the big event: Marriage. It’s not always easy to wait. But anyone who’s trained for something important knows that the best way to get through the training is to stay focused on the prize at the end. Sex is so terrific, it’s worth the tremendous effort and patience it takes to make sure it’s everything God intended it to be: the physical expression of a lifelong commitment. Of course, you can think about sex in very destructive ways, too—ways that become obsessive and distract you from real living, and ways that are disrespectful or hurtful to yourself and others. To keep your thoughts about sex from moving in a dangerous direction, there are a few things you can do. Avoid movies, music and magazines that promote sex between unmarried people or stir up lustful feelings in you. Find a Christian friend you trust and can talk to about your thoughts. Read what the Bible has to say about sex (check out Matthew 5:28; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8). And ask God to help you keep your thoughts healthy and honorable. My Teacher Touched Me … Q One day my science teacher asked me to stay after class. He touched my face, and told me I was beautiful. I smiled and said thanks, but I had no clue what this was leading to. Then his hand left my face and went to my shoulder. He said, “I want you to know that I love you.” I said OK. Then he began touching me all over. I told him I had to go. Before I left, he kissed me on the forehead. This is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. I NEED HELP!!! I feel so weird about this. I don’t know if I liked what he did or not. In one way it felt strange because he’s my teacher, but in another way it felt good. What should I do? Please help. A You should go immediately to your parents, your pastor, or another adult you trust and tell what happened. You are going to need their emotional support and help in taking the next step—reporting your teacher to the authorities, like the school principal and/or the police. What your teacher did is illegal. It’s also a terrible thing to do to someone. If he did it to you he is probably doing it to others. He needs to be stopped. Next, you need to talk to someone, like your pastor or a Christian counselor, about how you feel. You are already expe- riencing strange feelings about this, and those feelings may continue for a long time. You really need someone compas- sionate and understanding to help you sort through your feelings. Also, find one or two Christian friends to talk and pray with you. Follow on Twitter: @ywadgroupWebsite: http://www.youthwithadifference.org/ The Power Of A Song – by John Paculabo (from: We are Worship) [A year before he died, our friend John Paculabo wrote this brilliant article. We miss him, and we’ve still got a lot to learn, but pieces like this help...] ‘In good times and bad times people sing… to hide their fears, to express their joy; to endorse their beliefs, we carry songs with us throughout our lives and they reflect the character and the substance of our soul’. Music is not an accident that mankind suddenly stumbled across. Music is as old as the universe itself. It is as vital to us as the food that we eat and the air that we breathe. From the dawn of time man placed music at the very center of community life, playing a leading role in cer- emonies and rituals. Music is an ancient gift. Long before Gutenberg was even an idea man sang. It’s not surprising therefore that at the very beginning of creation we find music woven into the very fabric of the universe. For every creature, every thing that lives and breathes and moves has a sound that proclaims its creator. From the birds of the air to the beasts of the field, all of creation sings to its Creator. Even the universe itself sings; every planet, every sun produces radio waves that when converted to ‘fit’ our ears becomes audible sound (hear if for yourself atyoutu.be/_bnU6K1y468 - or Google ‘earth song sound’). There are approximately 200 million suns in our galaxy, many with orbiting planets, and there are approximately 200 million galaxies in the universe. If every single sun and planet has its own song, surely God has created an interstellar symphony beyond compare? Isn’t it amazing to think that in every moment of every day the universe it- self proclaims the glory of God? What’s more, how incred- ible is it to think of this song being made for an audience of one, entirely for His own pleasure? Songs aren’t just reserved for the planets. They become milestones in our lives, denoting our seasons, marking those big occasions, bringing hope in times of sorrow, joy in times of goodness, courage in times of danger. They inspire us, stirring us into action and exerting a most powerful influence on us all. If the songs that we sing become our mantras, then the music we consume throughout our lives – especially our early years – affects and shapes our thoughts and actions. The music that shapes us delivers so much more than pure pleasure; it directs almost everything about us – including our beliefs. Therefore the songs we carry with us throughout our lives become important resources – especially for us who call ourselves Christians. Our songs help renew our faith daily and songs that are full of biblical content and substance remind us of who God is and what He has done. Songs can shape us by bringing to mind God’s promises to us, helping heal our soul, renewing our mind and refreshing our spirit. Songs become the curriculum we carry in our hearts every day of our lives. So songs become our teachers, our ever-ready source of scripture, our constant companions on life’s journey, our daily provision that we hide in our hearts available at a moment’s notice with perfect recall. It’s hard to believe that two billion people entered the new millennium unable to read or write their own name, for these people one of the only learning resources open to them are the songs that they sing. But an inability to read or write is no barrier to the power of the song. John and Charles Wesley evangelized a whole nation on the strength and substance of their songs – at a time when the common people of England were largely illiterate.
  • 18. 34 35 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com The Wesleys travelled the countryside on horseback, but today songs of truth carrying the word of God travel on the airwaves and digital highways, crossing borders and oceans at will, ignoring the rule of governments, feeding hungry hearts in lands that are dry and thirsty. God calls us all to worship him, and the truths contained within our songs of proclamation and adoration help bring us to that place of worship, the place where God can speak and the place where we can listen. I remember meeting a local pastor in India who recount- ed and amazing story. He loved to hike and he would often drive himself miles to remote regions in Southern India just to walk in the wilderness for days on end. On one such occasion he came across a small village that did not appear on any map. On entering the village he met an old lady well into her nineties and as they began to talk he realised that she was a woman of faith. Her Christian walk began when she was 12 years of age. Two missionaries had appeared in her village, but within two days the local authorities forced them to leave. But in those 48 hours the missionaries had relayed the Christian message to the village. The old lady explained that she gave her life to God back then, and went on to become a midwife. Every baby she delivered she prayed for, and not once did any of the ba- bies she delivered died. It was a miracle in rural India, and so she gained a reputation as a woman who God favoured. Many came to faith because of her. When the pastor asked what books she had read, and what Bible she owned, she explained that she had never seen a Christian book or ever owned a Bible. Perplexed, the pastor asked then how she was able to keep her faith so fresh in such a remote place. Her reply was simple; referring back to the missionaries that visited her vil- lage when she was 12 she explained that ‘they taught me a song, and I sang it every day.’ For over 80 years this woman had fed on the good news that those missionaries had shared, and the song they had taught her. I have no idea what song it was – and perhaps that’s the point: the power of the song even extends beyond the arrangement of words and melody. Recently my travels took me to the Amazon River in Brazil, where members of a team from the charity Ray of Hope had travelled to a remote village. The place was one of 80,000 untouched villages in the Amazon basin, and we held an activity camp for kids, but what with Indians be- ing fun-loving people, many of the adults came also. After delivering the message of salvation and teaching them a few simple songs that spoke of the greatness and love of God, many wanted to become Christians and gave their lives to God. We promised to revisit with Bibles and books, but because of its remoteness it was several months before the team could return. As we prepared to return some months later, we began to worry: would their faith have remained strong? Without Bibles, books or other resources, could they really have kept going? We arrived and were amazed to find that not only were they still ‘alive in Christ,’ but even more of the village had come to faith. During the months that had elapsed they were sustained by a simple message and the songs that they sang. Nothing can replace the Word of God or provide the sys- tematic teaching that we find in books, but there’s power in these songs – real Christ-saving power. For those of you who write songs, I want you to remember this: scrip- ture and substance are the hallmark of songs that have impact and lasting power. Source: We are Worship BY AYENI EKUNDAYO · JANUARY 26, 2014 A little boy visiting his grandparents and given his first slingshot. He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit his target. As he came back to Grand- ma’s back yard, he spied her pet duck. On an impulse he took aim and let fly. The stone hit, and the duck fell dead. The boy panicked. Desperately he hid the dead duck in the wood pile, only to look up and see his sister watching. Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing. After lunch that day, Grandma said, “Sally, let’s wash the dishes.” But Sally said, “Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen today. Didn’t you, Johnny?” And she whispered to him, “Remember the duck!” So Johnny did the dishes. Later Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing. Grandma said, “I’m sorry, but I need Sally to help make sup- per.” Sally smiled and said, “That’s all taken care of. Johnny wants to do it.” Again she whispered, “Remember the duck.” Johnny stayed while Sally went fishing. After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s, finally he couldn’t stand it. • 19. 36 37 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com Dayo and Jumoke were one of the most popular and respected couples in their campus fellowship. They had been courting for over two years and everyone that knew them felt that their relationship would lead to marriage after school. One evening after bible study, because he was travelling the next day, Jumoke accompanied Dayo to his off-campus residence to spend some time with him. They discussed at length, joked, laughed and savoured each other’s company. They had no idea how quickly time had passed. Jumoke, distraught at the thought that she won’t be seeing Dayo for the next two months, expressed her reluctance to letting him go. In a bid to comfort her (and himself), Dayo drew her into his arms and planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. Standing there in each other’s arms, with Jumoke’s head resting on Dayo’s chest, they both wished for the moment to last forever. She looked up to tell him how much she loved him; and to Dayo, she had never looked loveli- er. He bowed his head towards her and just like ‘slow mo’, he kissed her. Jumoke’s eyes widened in surprise and against all her convictions, she closed her eyes and felt herself give in. The kiss became more pas- sionate and hands began to roam where they never before had. Jumoke was the first to break away. Dayo was still trying to process it all. He had never kissed Jumoke before; she had a no-kissing-till-our-wedding-day rule. Jumoke packed her things and headed for the door while Dayo apologized profusely, promising that it would never happen again. But it did, plus a little more, a couple of times over. Their bodies seemed to have a will of their own. Eventually, they both came to a decision to see their pastor before they went too far. Now, here is the question I have asked myself and others for a really long time, “how far is too far?” as regards physical intimacy in a relationship. How do you express your love for your partner ( le boo/ sweetheart/ fiance/ fiancee. The koko is sha that you Love, Lines and Boundaries. guys aren’t married yet) without offending God? Where this is that line we aren’t supposed to cross drawn? Cuddling? Petting? Kissing? Smooching? (Oh, secondary school days), Non-penetrative sex/ outercourse? (I only just knew of the term earlier this year, like what in the world?). Some say everything is cool and dandy as long as there is no penile/vaginal intercourse. I’ve heard different views on what’s okay and what is not. So, I really had to ask myself, how far is too far?” Frankly speaking guys, it’s not easy to maintain physical purity even in a godly relationship, (abi I lie?). To begin with; is your relationship ap- proved by God? I believe that impurity and purity are not separated by are separated by a fixed point/ line. In his book, I KISSED DATING GOODBYE, Joshua Harris wrote; “True love is a direction, a determined pursuit of righteousness. It all starts in the heart and we express it in a life style that flees opportunities for compro- mise.” Moral purity begins in the heart. Shikena. As Christians, God has very high standards for us. Matt 5:28 tells us that by looking at a woman lust- fully, a man has committed adultery with her in his heart. The direction of purity begins within. It starts in the heart, PS 119:11; “Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you”. I like the way THE MESSAGE renders Matt 5:27b- 28, it says, “Don’t think you’ve preserved your virtue simply by staying out of bed. Your heart can be cor- rupted by lust even quicker than your body. Those leering looks you think nobody notices – they also corrupt.” We can’t always control the thoughts that come into our minds but we can choose those that we dwell on. We can also help ourselves by not feed- ing our minds with erotic material; songs, pictures, books, videos, you know what I’m talking about ;) . I won’t go into that now. It’s also important to lay ground rules concerning physical intimacy with your partner. You and partner should agree on practical steps to avoid sexual sin. I’m not talking about seeing how far you can go with- out having sex. It really isn’t wise to explore bounda- ries and see how close you can come to the edge. I like to think of it as someone walking very close to a high cliff with a crumbling edge and seeing how far he can go without falling off. Like who does that? I know there are adrenaline junkies; my apologies, but honestly, I think everything might not be com- pletely alright up there. The usual thing is to keep a distance, a veeeerrrrry safe distance. Why dont you decide to make the purity of your partner and yourself a priority? ( that is if you haven’t yet). Support it practically by deciding where and when and with whom you choose to be. One hus- band told me recently, that he and his wife had to put a little distance between each other a week before their white wedding even though they already had their traditional wedding, in other to avoid compro- mising their good testimony. Another friend shared with me a story of how one night when his wife, then fiancée, was visiting, he had to call his friends into his room and send her home to avoid having sex with her. My partner and I have agreed not to talk about some stuff and read some books until very close to our wedding so that we do not ‘awaken love before it’s time’; in addition to the other ground rules we have laid for ourselves. I’m blessed to be in a relationship with a Godly man who has told (and shown) me several times that he values and respects me (and that includes my body) and my principles. If your partner doesn’t agree with you, or if they in- advertently constantly put you under sexual pressure, (Meeehn, wahala dey) I think it’s time for you to do some re-evaluation, chec self-discipline k your part- ner, check yourself too. Sometimes you might have to gather some guts and ultimately end that relationship no matter how hard or painful it might be. Reserve, or willpower sometimes isn’t enough to keep us from compromise, you need God’s help. My dear, flee! Pick race when you hear the warning bells in your heart ring. We have to take responsibility for our actions and not just heap the blame on the devil. If you feel you might have compromised your stand- ards, you don’t have to repeat the same mistakes. Turn to God, He forgives and redeems. I pray he continues to keep you and me. Amen Peace! Click to send feedback BY JEMIMA OJAPA
  • 20. 38 39 www.xtremgospel.com www.xtremgospel.com The first day I saw him, we were walking on the same long uneven dusty path, headed in opposite directions. I, going to a kiosk up ahead: He, coming down. He was a slim, dark and tall elderly man. Black sunglasses framed his dark gaunt face. With a walk- ing stick grasped in his right hand and a dark leather bound book clutched tightly beneath his left armpit he advanced slowly towards me. He walked in a manner typical to those bereft of physical sight, tap- ping his cane around his immediate perimeter then advancing with a few cautious steps. I thought it odd he had no young assistant or any one at all to escort him. My heart went out to him. I looked around. I wondered, was I the only one seeing him? Several thoughts ran through my mind; what was so impor- tant to bring this man this way despite his condi- tion? Should I go to him? What should I say? Excuse me sir, can I be of assistance to you? Would that be polite enough? See you, won’t you also ask where he’s headed? Young lady, why are you wasting time, run and meet this man before he stumbles. I walked faster towards him but I wasn’t fast enough. No, he didn’t fall like I feared. Someone had gone to him, an elderly woman previously seated at one of the road side shops. She greeted him cheerily, took the book from him and led him by the hand occa- sionally leaning in to his ear to say something. They made a curious sight, two elderly people, walking down the road, hand in hand. I slowed down my pace. They walked past me and headed towards a church around the corner. I rummaged through my purse and then my jean pockets looking for an imaginary object, I turned back searching the ground like what I was looking for had somehow fallen, just so that I could watch the man a little more. Yes, I can be inquisitive like that once in a while. It seemed that he was a well known face at the church because the members who were around went out to meet him as soon as they sighted him. The man’s face transformed almost immediately, his mouth broke into a wide grin putting on display a set of slightly discoloured teeth, I could bet that there were laugh lines beneath those glasses. The church folks offered their thanks to the woman as she returned. Service was just about to start. It didn’t look like a special service was about to hold, just regular bible study. I knew because I was familar with the church sched- ule. My mind began reeling with questions again: He simply came for bible study? how was he going back home? Where was home? Why go through all this trouble just to attend service. Wasn’t there church close to where he lived? What’s your story Mr..Mr.. Mr somebody? I saw him a couple of times after that, all on church service days, usually around the same time- some minutes before 6pm. It seemed to me that he really did come all this way just to attend church service. He must really enjoy it. Each time I saw him, I was tempted to go to him and at least ask for his name. Still haven’t been able to. Now that I’m writing about him, I wish I had. I learnt two things from watching Mr Somebody. The first – disabilty is a thing of the mind. The second – Always go to church. Yeah seriously, I know that with the advent of technology we can stream live services, listen to or watch messages on our devices or on T.V. Truth is none of those things beat fellowship (using the term broadly). So those excuses like not being in the mood, or wanting to watch a game or show on T.V don’t hold water. I’ll end with what Paul the Apostle said, ” Don’t stop meeting together with other believers, which some people have gotten into the habit of doing.
