3. Forgotten Heroes project
“The Unknown Fallen” is a visual
feast for readers of all ages, with
lavishly drawn illustrations and
striking authentic pictures. It
features not only historical
aspects of the First World War
but also unveils forgotten stories
and testimonies backed up with
breath-taking photos from
Muslim soldiers from all
continents fighting with the
Allied forces in battlefields far
away from their homes. It
highlights the mutual historical
and cultural interest of all these
brothers-in-arms and many more
fascinating facts associated with
every region of our planet.
Discover six years of war,
unrestricted by the constraints of
physical space with more than
200 unique pictures accompanied
by lively, informative text, offering
hours of jaw dropping moments –
highlighting that Muslims from
around the world contributed to
the history of Europe, thus
affirming that Muslim diaspora
communities are stakeholders in
Europe.
See the world in a whole new way
guided by images paired with
thought-provoking quotes that
encourage curiosity and hopefully
inspire you to look more closely at
an unknown world of interfaith in
and behind the trenches of the
cruel war that was World War 1.
Through the coffee table book our
project brings to attention the
contribution of Muslims in World
War 1, and the opportunities to use
this part of history to build bridges
of peace and understanding
between people of all faith and
none, to our audience of teenagers
and adults.
Coffee table books are fantastic
windows into worlds that most
people don’t have the ability to
experience on their own. While
picture books often present big,
lush illustrated landscapes – coffee
table books present a completely
different experience. Coffee table
books are all about curation.

perspectives on the real world,
gathering together that material,
showing the connections
between that material, and then
presenting those collections in
the most visually appealing way
possible.
If those curated collections are
attractive to adult audiences,
how powerful will they be for a
younger audience? For a
teenager whose experience with

outside world begins and ends
with TV or maybe a trip to the
battlefields in Europe, “The
Unknown Fallen” is an annotated
guidebook to the outside world.

packed end-to-end with an
incredible amount of information.
It’s attractive to look at, as
something from National
Geographic. On your table, it will
confirm that you are smart,
interested in history, religion and
peace building initiatives. But its
real value lies in what it can do
for our children to whom the
future belongs.

9. AWARDS: Between 7 and 10 artists exhibiting exemplary work in their
respective fields will receive a cash awards ranging from $250 - $500 at
CraftBoston Holiday. An independent juror will select the award
recipients from varying media categories. Each award winner will be
granted automatic entry into the following year’s shows. One artist will
also be selected to join the Fuller Craft Museum’s permanent collection.
There is only one application, deadline, and fee to apply to both
CraftBoston Spring 2019 and CraftBoston Holiday 2019.

11. Mohammad Ali Taraghijah
1943 – August 12, 2010 was an
Iranian painter, his work often
featured rural, Iranian, landscape
imagery.
Born 1943 in Tehran, Iran. He
graduated from the College of
Science & Technology with a
degree in Mechanical Engineering,
yet his heart was set on creating
art. He participated in the Iran
National Art Competition in 1968
and he won the
Golden Award that year.
In 1970 he returned to
Tehran and decided to take up
painting professionally.
In 1994, the Teheran Museum of
Contemporary Arts selected some
of his works for the museum
collection and printed a collection
of these works. In 1998, UNICEF
selected two of his paintings for
their Christmas cards.
His beautiful works have been
exhibited in Switzerland, Germany,
Italy, France, United States and
Japan. His paintings were selected
by the International Museum of
20th Century Arts (TIMOTCA) to
present Iran’s art.

19. Ahmed Mater
Born 1979, Tabuk,
Saudi Arabia is a Saudi artist and
physician.
His mediums are photography,
calligraphy, painting, installation,
performance and video. His work,
which explores history, the
narratives and aesthetics of
Islamic culture, and addresses
consumerism and transformation
taking place in the region and its
effects on geopolitics,
has attracted an international
audience. In 2003, he cofounded
"Edge of Arabia", an independent
arts initiative dedicated to
promoting the appreciation of
contemporary Arab art and
culture, with a focus on Saudi
Arabia.
Life and career
Ahmed Mater was born in 1979
in Tabuk in the north west of
Saudi Arabia on the Jordanian
border. He is the first child of
Mater Ahmed Al-Ziad, a
sergeant in the Saudi Arabian
Army, and
Fatimah Hassan Abdullah Aseeri, a
calligrapher and painter of
traditional Aseeri houses. Ahmed
has two brothers, Bandar
and Mohamed, and four sisters,
Aicha, Jawaher, Jamila and Reem.
In the 1990s Mater was given a
studio space in Abha at the al-
Meftaha artists' village.
He splits his time between the
Saudi Arabian cities of Abha,
Jeddah and Makkah.
Mater's wife, Arwa Alneami, is also
an artist. Together they run
pharan.studio – a salon, artists'
studios and "cultural mining
project" in Jeddah.
Work
Mater's work has been exhibited
internationally and acquired by
major international museums.
Illuminations, acquired by The
British Museum, is a series that
combines explicit notes from his
medical education with images of
the Kaaba and a mosque,
distributed as a collage around blue
and black x-ray images.

20. The work seems to ask the viewer if
humanity is more than just the
structure of the body.
In 2006, Mater mounted an
installation titled
The Yellow Cow products,
a work that address ecological
challenges of modern urbanized
society. According to the artist,
"The cow with the
yellow color was used as an
expression of religious heritage."
His Desert of Pharan series
features photographs and films
gathered over five-years,
documenting the changes taking
place in Islam's holiest city. Mater
considers the unprecedented
redevelopment of the Masjid Al-
Haram, including a multibillion-
dollar complex of luxury hotels,
malls and apartments.
Magnetism is a black cuboid
magnet surrounded by iron filings
to represent Hajj, Muslim's annual
pilgrimage which includes the
circumambulation of the Kaaba.
