Adolph Hitler was born in 1889 in Braunau, Austria near the German border. He did well in elementary school but poorly in high school, and moved to Vienna in 1907 where he was rejected from the Academy of Fine Arts. In Vienna, he was influenced by anti-Semitic politics and rejected ideas of equality, democracy, and socialism. During World War I, Hitler served as a messenger in a German infantry regiment on the western front, where he was decorated twice for bravery.
Father was 52 - mother (third wife) was 20 years younger (32) had 5 siblings - but only Hitler and a younger sister survived to adulthood dropped out of high school 2 years after his father’s death in 1903 Reapplies a year later, but was not allowed to take the entrance exam during this time his mother dies of cancer (1907) - he had a deep love and affection for his mother who was said to have been a gentle woman
Vienna is a sophisticated city and was an important influence of Hitler’s way of thinking - Vienna was a hotbed of antisemetic politics. During his time in Vienna Hitler began to read a great deal and was influenced by German nationalistic and racist sentiments. When he had his medical for the Austria-Hungry army in 1914 he was rejected as being: "Unfit for combatant and auxiliary duty - too weak. Unable to bear arms." was wounded in the leg and was temporarily blinded by a poison gas attack he never rose above the rank of corporal After the war Germany became bankrupt. Millions of Germans were unemployed. A weak government, called the Weimer Republic, replaced the empire.
