PAPER RESUME ANALYTICAL TOOL FOR LANGUAGE INVESTIGATION “TRANSFER ANALYSIS” Submitted As a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Learning Strategies and Method of Language and Literature Course at the English Education of Postgraduate Program By Eko Mulyono S200140053 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM OF LANGUAGE STUDIES MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SURAKARTA ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015 CONTENTS 1. Introduction Native language transfer has become and will always be the central concern of second language acquisition studies. This concept start with the contrastive analysis (CA) hypothesis ( Lado, 1957), then is played down by the creative construction hypothesis (Dulay and Burt, 1977), and brought into focus again from a cognitive and developmental perspective (Sharwood smith, 1979). The first era was characterized by the influence of structural linguistics and behaviorist psychology. Transfer from the native language was seen as a matter of habit. Negative transfer (or interference) can be predicted in cases of difference between native and the target language. The second era was characterized by a tendency toward cognitivism in psychology and language acquisition. Language acquistion, be it native or foreign, was considered as a creative process. The theory has become the construction hypothesis. The third era represents a corretive movement within the cognitive approach to language learning. This section tries to investigate about the role of language transfer in second language acquisition or foreign language. Start from contarstive analysis then move to transfer analysis. Then, finally, it describe language transfer as the central process in interlanguage creation. 2. Contrastive Analysis Contrastive linguistics is a branch of linguistics which seeks to compare two or more languages or subsystems of languages with the aims at describing the similarities and differences between them. According to Fisiak: 1, contrastive linguistics is a sub-discipline of linguistics concerned with “the comparison of two or more languages (subsystem of languages) in order to determine both differences and similarities that hold between them”, (1980:1). 3. Base Concept Contrastive Analysis the determining of contrastive analysis into language studies are based on the following theoretical assumptions as follows: a. Material of the language study which effectively is the material which is based on the language description, (Fries, 1945). b. By contrasting the L1 with the L2 can predict and decsribe the patterns that will cause difficulty and easy of studying language ( Lado, 1957). c. The changing that should be occured on the people behaviour that study foreign language can be similarited with the different interlanguage structure and students culture with language structure which will be learned, ( Wardhaugh, 1970). 4. Language is a method of communicating ideas, emotions and desires by means of a system of arbitrarily produced symbols for physiological as well as psychological survival. In a multilingual Indian Society, where English acts as a second language, our aim of teaching English is not to develop British or American accent but to help the learners to overcome regional accents, wrong pronunciation and gradually train them in proper articulation. Taking into account speech, language, and culture, we aim to provide educators with a solid framework and information about many languages to support their understanding of speech and language development in English Language Learners. We explore Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, and other languages to help SLPs support English Language Learners. Both linguistic and cultural knowledge are critical when working with families and children from different language backgrounds (Goldstein, 2012). Our goal in exploring the most commonly spoken languages in the United States is to enhance our understanding of patterns common to English language learners with different native languages. Our framework for analyzing errors provides parents, teachers, and other educators with the process they need to determine whether language production errors are indicative of language impairment or are the result of the normal process of language acquisition with more than one language. It is a very simple framework—if sounds/structures exist in both languages, they should not be affected in second language production. If sounds/structures do not exist in both languages, we expect transfer of skills or features from one language to another.
