blindness
spinal cord injuries
burns
amputations
and, the signature wounds of these conflicts,
TBI
PTSD

17. MISSION
Project Courage, a Florida “Not-For-Profit”
corporation, brings together the financial,
technical and management resources to support
active duty service members, Reservists, National
Guardsmen, veterans and their families.
18.
19. The current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan represent the
most sustained combat operations for U.S. forces since the
Vietnam War. The high rates of trauma experienced by our
military will result in increased demands on DoD, the VA, and
community healthcare systems.
The development of cost effective, novel 21st Century
methods to engage service members, assist their families and
to treat these warriors is imperative.
20.
21.
22.
23.
24. Project Courage partnering with the federally funded
Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-
Served Areas (CERMUSA) at St. Francis University, Loretto,
PA will create Courage University by utilizing “cloud
computing”, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies.
This partnership will assist the Department of Defense in
the treatment of PTSD and TBI and other injuries by ...
25.
26. 1. ... developing in accordance with TRICARE, HIPAA
and other regulatory agencies, a secure web-based
platform for the treatment of PTSD and chronic TBI,
especially for National Guardsmen and Reservists
whose units are scattered throughout the United
States away from the main treatment centers.
27.
28. 2. ... creating a web based “Minds in Motion” program
that incorporates kinesthetic techniques via game
consoles such as Wii and Play Station as well as
tailored fitness equipment where the patient actually
carries out a physical activity in conjunction with the
learning or re-learning process.
29.
30. 3. ... providing National Guardsmen, Reservists,
servicemen on active duty and their families a
secure managed Internet environment to discover,
examine and evaluate the assistance given by public
and private service organizations.
31.
32. 4. ... building a coalition of wounded warriors,
healthcare givers and other public and private
organizations for the service member and his/her
family.
5.... assisting the healthcare giver, the service member
and families with interactive distance learning
programs regarding PTSD, TBI and other pertinent
information.
33.
34.
35.
36. Physical activity has been shown to enhance the
effectiveness of psychological therapies and to have a role in
improving quality of life and symptom management for
people with a wide range of mental health problems.
Physical activity has a double benefit, since people with
mental health problems are also at increased risk of a range
of physical health problems, including cardiovascular
disease, endocrine disorders and obesity.
However referral to a physical activity is rarely available in
psychiatric and counseling treatment settings.
37.
38. Project Courage will provide that activity by creating the
Courage Games. To reach as many military personnel as
possible eight Regional Courage Games will be created by
partnering with ...
• member organizations of the National Association of
Sports Commissions
• Disabled Sports Organizations
• National Governing Bodies
• veteran and military associations
39.
40. The Courage Games will ...
•begin in the summer of 2010 in Gainesville, FL
•then at seven other sites to be determined
throughout the year.
•within 400 miles of a major U.S.military installation
•include Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve
units from neighboring states
•include veterans
•include events for family members
47. funding
Funding for Project Courage will come from three
sources:
1. Federal Government via an appropriation request
submitted by Congressman Robert Wexler
2. Grants, donations & ‘gifts in kind’ via the Courage
Fund established by the Alma Foundation of Boca
Raton, FL
3. Corporate Sponsorships

$5,500,000 for Project Courage
The Rand Corporation, Department of Defense, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all
report that the long term effects and consequences of TBI, PTSD, and other psychological health issues
will cost billions of dollars in care, treatment, and rehabilitation. Of the 1.64 million U.S. troops
deployed in the war on terror, approximately 320,000 have sustained a TBI and another 300,000 some
form of PTSD. The Rand Report also estimates that cost for treating PTSD could range from a $25,000
per year in mild cases to $408,000 for severe cases. This program can alleviate these costs through
effective psychological rehabilitation.
