2. Learning Outcomes
Ireland’s fishing history.
Overfishing including the
reasons for it.
sustainable exploitation of fish.
3. Over- exploitation of a resource
Fish is a renewable resource.
The over- exploitation of this resource can lead to its
depletion.
Most fish are caught along the continental shelf.
This means they are caught around the coast of all
continents.
4. Ireland’s Fishing History:
Has many fishing ports.
Location beside the Atlantic Ocean.
Aided by the continental shelf and shallow waters.
Ideal for fish to live and grow.
Abundance of plankton
Heavily involved in the fishing industry.
Income and employment
5. Overfishing
There has been a lot of over fishing in Ireland.
It’s become a major issue causing many people to lose
their jobs in the industry.
Overfishing occurs for the following reasons:
6. Membership of the EEC (EU)
When Ireland joined the EU in 1973, we gave up control
of our waters.
We had to share our fish with other member countries.
7. Modern Technology:
Sonar technology and radar equipment means fish are
easier to locate and catch.
Increase in the size of trawlers, they can stay out at sea
longer and catch more.
They can also process and refrigerate the fish out at sea.
8. Mesh:
The mesh size in nets used to be small.
It meant young fish were being caught.
9. Seasons and Quotas:
As there was no closed fishing season, all fish could be
caught all year round.
Fish were not able to replenish themselves.
There was no limits on how much trawlers could catch.
10. Sustainable Exploitation of fish
Many fish are now endangered because of overfishing.
Ireland had to limit the amount of fish aloud to be
caught.
The following steps were taken:
11. Steps:
The creation of conservation zones around Ireland.
The introduction of yearly quotas.
A ban on endangered species.
Shortening of fishing seasons for some types of fish.
An increase in mesh sizes.
