23. PROGRAMMING FOR ICT INTEGRATION
• Select the best ICT “tool” to enable students to
demonstrate their understanding of the outcome
• There are thousands of ICT applications – you do not
need to be an expert in all of them! Learn and teach
the skills required for the programmed task.
• Facilitate students use of ICT and learning… then get
out of their creative way or better still, YOU might
learn something from them.
JenICT is one of the general capabilities in the Learning across the Curriculum content in the new syllabuses. It is hoped that by more closely embedding ICT in these new syllabuses, it will more closely align to meeting the learning needs and enhance the learning outcomes of 21st students today. The 19th Century assessment statement, for me, stands as is! Now all we need to do is work on assessment…

Belinda:I use this to remind me whether the ICT activity I am doing with the students is the best activity – or is it worth doing at all.Substitution: Word processor replacing the typewriter – no cut and paste, no spell checker – just substitutionAugmentation: cut and paste, add images, spell checkModification: Instead of the word doc – excel doc- formulas and graphs – even email it instead of printing – increases productivityRedefinition: The technology completely redesigns the task. Before the document was created by one person – now it can be worked on collaboratively by others. Google Docs – add photos, videos – on multiple devices. Total redefinition.Other examples of Redefinition are creating videos, podcasts, video conferencing.

Really?Don’t just pick the ICT tool that you are familiar with.Professional Development Is KeyProfessional development is perhaps the single largest factor in the success or failure of the digital school.To be effective, professional development needs to include administrators and take different forms depending on the needs of the school. The focus needs to be on curriculum integration, data-driven decision making, and capacity building.
