The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins by Walter Dean Myers 3rd Grade Book Report
1. The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins - A World War II Soldier
By Walter Dean Myers
My name is Scott Pendleton Collins.
I am an American World War II Soldier
in the 101st
Airborne.
I am in England training for
the D-Day invasion.
It's June 7, 1944 and the invasion
has started. We have landed at
Omaha beach. The noise is like the
worst thunderstorm you have
ever heard.
I didn't think I was going to make it. I
got to the wall where the other guys
were and saw many people dead or
wounded.

2. It's been two weeks since D-Day
and we are pushing through to
Germany. We went by a beautiful
church that was badly damaged
by bombs. We have been fighting
like crazy but have not taken
25 miles yet.
It's July 5, 1944. I went on a patrol
last night and captured a German
soldier. My commanding officer
will question him.
It's July 14, 1944.
We hold the ridge
and the Germans want
to take it. We shot at
them and they fired
back with tanks and
flamethrowers but
we were able to hold
the ridge and
the Germans retreated.
3. My old
private strips
My new
sergeant strips
I was promoted to Sergeant
today even though
I never made corporal.
They call it a field promotion.
I will be 18 in 19 days.
It is my 18th
birthday
and I've been shot
in the knee.
There is a lot of pain
but the doctor says
I am going to be OK.
They are putting me on
a boat back
to England.
