This document discusses moving from being efficient to being effective in building information modeling (BIM) projects. It provides examples of highly detailed BIM projects using IFC data formats for modeling, quotations, rule checking, logistics, fire safety analysis, and simulations. Lessons learned include not letting the means become the goal, that data alone does not equal collaboration, and data is only useful when used effectively. The future of construction is predicted to have more available data, automation through robotics and niche applications, and a greater need for knowledge of both engineering and data. Organizations must learn to work effectively with increasingly complex technologies and changing processes rather than just focusing on efficiency.

compliance requirements in order to be fit for a
specific purpose”

41. Pontsteiger Prominent Amsterdam location
316 apartments
(including most expensive penthouses in Amsterdam)
100 million EURO construction costs
• Everything in BIM from the beginning
• Quotations via IFC
• Rule checking in IFC
• Just in time logistics based on IFC
• Suppliers deliver data in IFC Cranes and
support constructions in 4D BIM
• Fire safety analyses with IFC
• Simulations (wind, fire, energy) based on IFC
• And so much more…
42. PONTSTEIGER STATISTICS
Final version:
230 IFC files (actually almost 350)
15.1 Gb data
236 Million IFC objects; of which
19.3 Million relations
2.7 Million products
16.5 thousand aggregations
> 3300 revisions
> 6000 BCF topics communicated
55. THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT
There are more and more data available!
So:
Things will be automated
You can already buy a robot for 1500$ and program it to do what you want
Niche applications will make your life easier
Machine learning will be there faster then you think
56. PREPARE YOURSELF (AND YOUR ORGANISATION)
Actual experience and knowledge about engineering/construction
will be more and more important
Knowledge how to work with data will become a requirement,
and later a ‘normal’ competence
Remember there is a backside to everything
Nothing is simple
57. PREPARE YOURSELF (AND YOUR ORGANISATION)
“We are used to doing the same thing over and over and make that more efficient,
but the ‘standard’ processes and tools don’t cut it anymore
in an industry that is increasingly complex and changing.
We need to learn to work in an effective way to reach our goals faster”
58. PREPARE YOURSELF (AND YOUR ORGANISATION)
“We are used to doing the same thing over and over and make that more efficient,
but the ‘standard’ processes and tools don’t cut it anymore
in an industry that is increasingly complex and changing.
We need to learn to work in an effective way to reach our goals faster”
because the technology to automate tasks is already available
