3. Greek National school system
The education system of Greece is both national and
unified.
The school year lasts nine months with intersperse
holidays (two weeks on Christmas and two weeks on
Easter) and the longest ones during the summer (three
months)
The SchoolTimeTable starts at 8:15 and ends at 13:15 for
all students.Then all the students who wish to attend the
All Day School Program stay at school until 15:00 or
16:00.

The educational policy is drawn up by the Ministry of
Education
is considered to be totally centralized
In Greece there are multi-grade and few-grade schools,
due to the country's peculiarity in its geophysical
landscapes.
At the Primary School courses are taught by one teacher
per class, apart from the subjects of Music, Arts,
Theatrical Education, Computer Science, English,
German and French Language and Physical Education,
which are taught by specialized teachers.
5. Greek National school system
The compulsory education in Greece lasts ten years:
1 year at Kindergarten (5-6 yrs)
6 years in Primary School (6-12 yrs)
3 years in High School (12-15 yrs )
From the age of 15 till 18yrs there is the grade of
Lyceum (Senior High school ) which is optional for
attendance and with a choice between the General
Common Lyceum and the Professional Lyceum.
8. TEACHING AIMS OF COMPULSORY PER GRADE
KINDERGARDEN contains:
Preliminary stage, pre mathematical concepts, basic
concepts of space-time, emotional education, group co-
operation education, development of ecological
consciousness, promotion of talents and inclinations,
familiarization with the school rules and the school
programme.
10. Greek Language of 1st Grade
Greek Language of 1st Grade contains:
• Acquisition of basic reading (phonemic
consciousness, recognition of letters, the
structure at the level of the syllabus, word
and sentence, intonation, punctuation)
• Comprehension skills as well as the search
and use of information in a small text
• Cultivation of writing skills
• Enrichment and clarification of the
vocabulary (writing of letters, of a syllabus,
a word and a sentence
• Awareness of the basic elements of the
structure and function of the language (
basic rules of grammar and syntax of small
texts, contact with literature and poems).
11. Mathematics of 1st Grade
Mathematics of 1st Grade contains:
• Recognition and writing numbers up to
100
• Recognition and use of mathematical
symbols - Regular numbers.

Environmental Studies contains:
• The Environmental Studies do not correspond to a single
scientific discipline, but is a field where students study
complex subjects, which are being studied by various
disciplines. The Environmental Study integrates
objectives and conceptual tools from the physical, social,
cultural, historical, religious and economic learning
environments.

Greek Language of 2nd Grade contains:
• The cultivation of spoken and written
language through various kinds of texts, such
as descriptive, narrative, explanatory,
instructions, comics, recipes, fairy tales that
are usually authentic
• The acquisition of the language structure
intuitively, through examples without
learning the grammatical rules by heart but
inductively
• The development of strategies for the
correct spelling of words through exercises
and mainly by self-correction (using
dictionaries)
• Writing meaningfully (writing shopping lists,
invitation for a party, small newspaper
articles, writing a fairy tale as a team work)

Εnglish Language of 1st and 2 nd Grade:
According to P.E.A.P which is the national English Learning
Programme for Early Childhood, the aim of this stage is
acquaintance with the foreign language through the kids’
linguistic and extra-linguistic action.
The educational material recommended by PEAP follows
the basic principle of “learning through play” in a pleasant
atmosphere.
The P.E.A.P’s activities are grouped in six circles of different
fields of interest for the beginners such as animals, toys,
family, Christmas numbers, colors, food, etc.The material is
from poems, rhymes, songs and sounds to games, stories
and fairytales, from comics and flashcards to motion
activities and crafts.
At the end of of 2nd grade’s schoolyear, there is an
additional aim to be achieved the gradual literacy of the
beginners in English through activities like matching words
with sounds and familiarizing with the phonemic system of
the English Language in a holistic communicative approach.
