What have you learned from your audience feedback?
To collect audience feedback, I decided to do various things, one of them being to upload
my draft video onto the internet, using YouTube and Vimeo, popular video sharing sites.
I felt that it was important to gain as much feedback from my target audience before
publishing the finished product. My target audience was predominantly, girls, aged 12-
25. Due to this age group, my target audience would be teenage girls, still in school,
college or university or even work. The psychographic for my audience would be
‘mainstream’ as the music video comes under the pop genre, and pop music is the most
commonly listened to music genre.
I felt that it was important to gain feedback from my target audience, to gain feedback, I
created a survey using Survey Monkey, which is a free online questionnaire creator,
which allows you to send a link to your social media to get responses on your survey
anonymously. Making the survey anonymous was important as I felt I would get a better
valid response from the survey takers, and people wouldn’t feel pressured into choosing
other options which they think they are supposed to like. In addition to this, I posted on
various Lady Gaga fan pages on social media and messaged well known fans asking them
to complete the survey.
Within the survey I used some tick boxes and multiple choice options, which produced
quantitative data, however, I also left empty text boxes below questions so users could
add more detailed comments, sharing their opinions on how I could improve or what
they liked, this is qualitative data. By creating these surveys I was able to see what I was
doing right, and what could be improved as well what I could maybe add in or remove to
make the video appear more professional and effective. Audience feedback is such an
important part in all stages of the production process as without the audience feedback I
would not know if my music video, and final products were really attracting my target
audience of the indie pop genre which I was hoping for. However, although my surveys
did provided me with a better understanding of my production, there were some
limitations. For instance the use of questionnaires can limit the amount of feedback you
can gain from your audience, this especially with the opinion questions, this can be time
consuming as you have to sort through answers one by one which is a long process.
Simpler ways that I gained important and essential feedback was from my peers, due to
most of my peers being media students and also creating their own music videos, they
knew what they were talking about and were able to give me advice. I also knew that my
friends would be very honest with me and tell me if they thought something didn’t work
or didn’t look right, this was an advantage of asking them. However, the disadvantage of
this was that all of my friends are within the same age group and therefore doesn’t
account for my whole target audience. Some of this feedback is recorded and is on my
blog for everyone to see. I asked 4 people from my class and two of my teachers to watch
the draft of my music video and then comment on what they thought was good and what
I could improve on. One positive aspect of this is that I constantly had this footage to
refer back to if I needed to.
Overall, I believe that audience feedback is a crucial part of creating a successful music
video as it allows you to improve and develop your existing ideas whilst adhering to what
the target audience wants to see and watch.
