4. The IxDA...
is an organization dedicated to bringing professionals together to
advance the field of interaction design. I contributed on a small
team to start the Chicago Chapter of IxDA in 2007.

46. Food = Interaction
Food is what you make of it.
More than 50% of how you
experience food is not in the
food, but how you perceive it.
47. The Lost Art of Efficiency in
Design
Small changes in efficiency affect user
behavior. Time is one of the most important
aspects to a user’s experience.

50. Selling Your Ideas
We sell all of the time. Selling an idea is
just as important as coming up with the
idea.
51. Working with Executives
It’s about engaging with executives
in an efficient manner that’s
effective and that can enable the
success of the business.

54. Learn to Drive Your UX
Career
Figuring out your “North Star” is
the first step toward achieving
your goals. Most of us don’t take
the time to do this.
55. Making More UX Designers
There is a gap because UX
design is strategic; you don’t
want just anyone giving you
advice on the direction of your
business.
56. Other talks I found interesting:
The “De-intellectualization of UX” – How the skills gap in interaction design is driving it more
towards art rather than science.
Designing Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) – Describes the different types of VUIs and provides
design guidelines for each.
Introduction to OKRs – OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) are being used by companies like
Google and Intel to motivate project teams.
Better Collaboration – Dan Brown, author of Communicating Design, gives an engaging talk on
how project teams can improve collaboration.
Animation: How Motion & Interaction Design Work Together – Interesting talk that ties
Disney’s 12 Principles of Animation to interaction design.
Increasing Playfulness in Game Design – A series of design principles to inspire curiosity in
users, thus making your product more playful.

All 5 senses contribute to our perception of food
Food is about discovering what interactions work
Examples: texture, color, weight, sound
Consider all senses when creating user experiences
10 years from now it wouldn’t be inconceivable for us to be designing experiences that incorporate all senses
Perception of whether you enjoy something is greatly affected by time.
Small changes in efficiency affect user behavior
Examples: Crosswalk buttons, airport luggage, Disneyland lines
Perceived efficiency = Anticipatory design
Defining an idea and sharing it with others should be taught in design schools
Questions you can use to vet your idea
How you present your idea should be dictated by the type of idea (above)
How to tailor your pitch for your audience type
Developing rapport with your audience
Apply methods we use to better understand users
Empathy applies to executives as well.
Anxiety over whether we as designers should even be at the table = imposter syndrome.
Need to learn executive’s language. Need to hear objective rationale and value. Down-to-earth.
Learn how they are evaluated and how to support them.
Try to understand the organizational structure.
Respect and trust is important
Assert your POV and don’t apologize
Simplify and explain concept like to a child
It’s ok to disagree, with concise credible rationale
Don’t attempt to wear hats you’re not qualified to wear
Many execs love to sketch and visualize their ideas

consulting or client-side
A guided, systematic way to define:
Your career path,
Your brand,
Your idea workplace,
The people to help you.
