Open Access Mandates and the Future of Research Funding

Funding agencies are increasingly requiring public, open access dissemination of funded research results. This session will provide an overview of open access mandates affecting Canadian researchers, including the recent Tri-Council Open Access Policy, while also addressing emerging developments around data archiving mandates. Learn how to ensure grant compliance, as well as how these mandates will impact where and how publicly funded research is published and shared. Presented on Thursday, August 27, 2015 for Research Day held at MacEwan University, Edmonton, Alberta

Abstract: Drawing on data from an investigation of 126 academic, peer-reviewed journals in library and information science (LIS), this presentation will discuss ways that those working in LIS can take back control over how their work is disseminated and shared online. For this to happen, however, members of the profession need to recognize and consciously grapple with the ubiquitous capitalist system that informs so many of the services, functions, and expectations that are tied to the profession. A Look into Closed Access Capitalism and LIS Publishing Practices

Presentation at WILU, MacEwan University, Edmonton, AB. Abstract: The swift evolution of Open Access (OA) publishing of scholarly works has been driven by researchers and librarians who recognize the societal benefits of these resources being freely available on the Internet. Especially in fields relevant to Science, Technology and Medicine, high quality OA content can benefit people conducting both personal and professional research anywhere in the world. These resources can prove exceptionally valuable to students whose access to scholarly research materials may be limited by costly journal subscriptions both while they are in school and long after they have graduated. This presentation will draw on findings from an exploratory research study that involved a survey sent to academic librarians across Canada questioning the degree to which they are educating students about Open Access research materials and their motivations for and against doing so. Based on participants’ responses, suggested teaching strategies and promotional initiatives will be shared with session attendees. Information literacy teaching methods discussed aim to foster a broader understanding of Open resources and overall scholarly publishing processes among students developing critical and sustainable researching skills.

Free online textbooks (“open textbooks”) are becoming a reality for a growing number of students in higher education. This session will explore initiatives that are making this possible including the British Columbia Open Textbook Project and the Campus Alberta Open Education Resources Initiative. Participants will be asked to reflect on how open textbooks could benefit their own students both economically and in terms of student learning, while also considering possible drawbacks and implications that these emerging resources pose. A core value of librarianship lies in providing users with equal and immediate access to information. This is frequently not possible, however, particularly when it concerns providing access to academic research literature available through costly journal subscriptions. Drawing on a range of examples, this presentation describes individual and collective actions that librarians have taken to overcome commercial barriers and help to ensure equitable online access to research and scholarship. It also addresses initiatives and services that both academic and public libraries could be implementing and more broadly supporting if unrestricted access to information is truly a goal. Participants will be asked to consider their own perspectives on the open access movement, its intentions and limitations, and how they might support it in their own professional lives.

A growing number of websites provide ways to see how many times research and teaching materials have been cited, viewed, downloaded, and shared with others. Learn how to tell a story about the scholarly and social impact of your work using both traditional and alternative metrics when documenting accomplishments in CVs, dossiers, and funding applications. This hands-on session will include finding and interpreting metrics in Google Scholar, Scopus, ImpactStory.org, ResearchGate, and more.

Details matter. Each of these presentations share tips and advice on getting the interactions and content on your website right for your users. MacEwan librarians look at how micro-interactions, the moments when we delight our users by refining the way we offer services, lead to macro-results. Get concrete recommendations for designing positive micro-interactions with library users in mind. Speakers use their own experience designing a new institutional repository to outline steps to identify, refine, and test micro-interactions with users, and highlight the impact of their strategy on the overall user experience.

Poster presented at the Council on Undergraduate Research Conference (CUR 2014) on Monday, June 30 in Washington, DC. *Save to PDF for larger/readable text* Abstract: Publishing opportunities for undergraduate students continue to grow, particularly in university-hosted, student-led open access journals. The MacEwan University Student eJournal (MUSe) is a recent initiative that involves undergraduate students from across disciplines at every level of the publication process, from solicitation of submissions through to blind peer-review, and dissemination. These students are each actively involved with faculty mentors, affording them the opportunity to work alongside experienced academics while gaining insight and knowledge about the ways in which scholarly and creative publications are managed. Drawing on the experiences of those involved with MUSe, along with related efforts of other undergraduate research publications, this poster describes in detail ways that journal managers can work to ensure meaningful and sustainable faculty engagement in student journals. This includes best practices for recruiting faculty mentors, and effective means of providing necessary support to ensure a worthwhile and engaging experience for faculty and students alike during every stage of the publishing process.

There are dozens of opportunities for college and university faculty to share their teaching and research materials freely on the Internet, from personal websites and social media accounts to institutional repositories. Doing so can open up great opportunities to share expertise, find collaborators, and reach new heights in establishing oneself professionally among peers. Sharing also provides a sustainable means for academics and students around the world to learn from and build on each other’s work. This session will provide an overview of ways faculty can easily and meaningfully engage with the online world by sharing their work. A variety of websites and services that are popular among a growing number of academics will be highlighted and discussed in terms of their benefits and potential applications. Common concerns around copyright and intellectual property will also be addressed, and participants will learn some practical ways to maintain and communicate their rights over works when placing them online.

Poster presented at the SPARC Open Access Meeting in Kansas City, MO on March 3, 2014. Abstract: How do you engage undergraduate students with topics to do with open access to research on the Internet? Offer them popcorn, candy and comedy, of course! To celebrate Open Access Week 2013, MacEwan University Library held an Open Access Comedy Film Festival. The event featured daily showings of films that have entered the public domain from the likes of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and The Three Stooges, along with brief introductions to what open access research journals are and where to find them online. The event turned out to be a uniquely fun and successful way to engage the university community with not only the open access movement but related efforts that embrace the free online exchange of ideas and creativity. Learn about how the event came together as well as recommendations the organizer has to offer anyone who is inspired to host a similar event at their own college or university.

At Red Deer College, librarians have discovered that using this event concept specifically as a professional development tool encourages dialogue and fosters growth and innovation in teaching and learning practices. This presentation will address the process librarians went through to organize and host this event, and the resulting benefits shared among teaching staff and student participants. Learn about how your own institution can encourage both instructors and students to take on the role of “living books” reflecting upon and sharing their teaching and learning strategies and inspiring their peers.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
