First steps towards publishing library data on the semantic web

DBpedia is the Linked Data version of Wikipedia. Starting in 2007, several DBpedia dumps have been made available for download. In 2010, the Research Library at the Los Alamos National Laboratory used these dumps to deploy a Memento-compliant DBpedia Archive, in order to demonstrate the applicability and appeal of accessing temporal versions of Linked Data sets using the Memento “Time Travel for the Web” protocol. The archive supported datetime negotiation to access various temporal versions of RDF descriptions of DBpedia subject URIs. In a recent collaboration with the iMinds Group of Ghent University, the DBpedia Archive received a major overhaul. The initial MongoDB storage approach, which was unable to handle increasingly large DBpedia dumps, was replaced by HDT, the Binary RDF Representation for Publication and Exchange. And, in addition to the existing subject URI access point, Triple Pattern Fragments access, as proposed by the Linked Data Fragments project, was added. This allows datetime negotiation for URIs that identify RDF triples that match subject/predicate/object patterns. To add this powerful capability, native Memento support was added to the Linked Data Fragments Server of Ghent University. In this talk, we will include a brief refresher of Memento, and will cover Linked Data Fragments, Triple Pattern Fragments, and HDT in more detail. We will share lessons learned from this effort and demo the new DBpedia Archive, which, at this point, holds over 5 billion RDF triples.

Paper presented at the 12th International Conference on Digital Preservation, November 2-6, 2015. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Abstract: The National Library of France (BnF) has recently implemented a new module for its Scalable Preservation and Archiving Repository (SPAR) to set up preservation strategies based on formats, agents, workflows, tools and tests, and managed as reference packages in the Archive. This module aims to fulfill an objective: for SPAR to be fully self-documented. Formats, agents and workflows are formally described and preserved along with the Information packages in which such elements are involved. Although this was a feature that was included from the beginnings of SPAR, the new Preservation Planning module aims to provide a tool that can more easily build these reference packages and that will more closely involve domain experts and the IT department in the processes of preservation planning. But the main innovation lies in the documentation of decisions that directed their selection as standards in SPAR: test data are now preserved as a new kind of reference package.

Many Data Cube-based datasets have been released since then. Tools for the generation and exploitation of such datasets have also appeared. While the benefits for the usage of RDF Data Cube and the generation of Linked Data in this area seem to be clear, there are still many challenges associated to the generation and exploitation of such data. In this talk we will reflect about them, based on our experience on generating and exploiting such type of data, and hopefully provoke some discussion about what the next steps should be.

Thanks to digitization, today more than 55 million objects from the collections of Europe's libraries, archives and museums are available online to explore and reuse via Europe's digital library, Europeana. This talk will introduce some of the main activities, datasets and tools in the digitization of cultural heritage. The main focus will be on the Europeana Newspapers collection, a public domain licensed dataset of roughly 12 million pages of historic newspapers, and the possibilities and challenges in analyzing such large and heterogeneous textual resources with common NLP and machine learning tools.

The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. Sara Mae O’Brien Scott and Tatiana Baquero Cakici, Senior Consultants at Enterprise Knowledge (EK), presented “AI Fast Track to Search-Focused AI Solutions” at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC24) that took place on April 11, 2024 in Seattle, WA. In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. O’Brien-Scott and Cakici showcased a case study where a taxonomy, an ontology, and a knowledge graph were used to structure content at a healthcare workforce solutions organization, providing personalized content recommendations and increasing content findability. In this session, participants gained insights about the following: Most common types of AI categories and use cases; Recommended steps to design and implement taxonomies and ontologies, ensuring they evolve effectively and support the organization’s search objectives; Taxonomy and ontology design considerations and best practices; Real-world AI applications that illustrated the value of taxonomies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs; and Tools, roles, and skills to design and implement AI-powered search solutions.
