11. THE FOUR SEASONS NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS Blue Corn Maiden was the prettiest of all the maiden sisters. All the people loved her because she was beautiful and also had a kind and gentle spirit. She gave crops to the people. One cold winter day she went out to get some firewood. Then she saw Winter Katsina, the spirit who brings winter to Earth. As soon as Winter Katsina saw her, he fell in love with her. Then he invited Blue Corn Maiden to visit his house and he locked her there. Winter Katsina loved Blue Corn Maiden very much, but he she was very sad. One day, Winter Katsina went out and forgot to lock the door. Then Blue Corn Maiden, who was staying at home, lit a fire and suddenly Summer Katsina appeared. “ What are you doing here?” Winter Katsina cried very angrily coming through the door. “ I came to release her. She is not happy here anymore” Summer Katsina answered. Winter Katsina and Summer Katsina started a cruel fight. Finally, they decided to get to an agreement: Blue Corn Maiden will live with Winter Katsina for half of the year. During that time people will have no corn. During the other half of the year, Blue Corn Miden will live with the people on the Earth and will give then corn for six months.
