1.
2. Yes, for three main reasons. Firstly, the dark, sinister and classical music. Secondly, the costumes and accessories, such as the suits and the guns, and thirdly the violent actions, Italian American dialogue and the frequent use of black.
4. I feel that it is effective to a degree, as it is a short and catchy title and links to voiceover at the beginning. However, the term ‘Made’ needs specialist knowledge to understand the term, may not be understood by the mass market.
5. Is ‘It’s a cut-throat business’ an effective tagline?
6. I feel that it is a good tagline as it clearly alludes to violence and the gangster genre, ‘business’ gives the idea that it is their livelihood and creates an ominous undertone. However, may be a bit too long.
7. Is the music effective and does it fit with the genre?
8. The music clearly establishes a gangster film as it sounds sinister and dark yet has a classical sound, due to the piano; it also works well how the beat comes in when the motif starts, so it does not get repetitive and boring. I think it is both effective and in keeping with the genre.
10. The best shot is the shooting in the toilet, as it creates suspense well and works well when the main character suddenly appears with a gun, good lighting and variety of shots. Also the first and last shot in black and white work well as they establish a small theme with both being in black and white at start and end, the slow motion when the unanimous character drops the gun adds suspense and fits really well with the music. Finally, the main character closing the boot door on someone works well as it includes a different angle of shot, is lighted well and in keeps with the genre.
12. The worst shot is the start of the motif where the character gets robbed, as it is way too dark and it is unclear of what is happening, also the hoodies don’t associate at all with the gangster genre, maybe spoil the theme. The shot where the main character is walking, doesn’t work well as it is not clear he is carrying a gun and too dark. Finally, the start of the main character’s voiceover, where it is a shot of his face, is lightly distorted.
14. I believe the dialogue is good as the language is ominous and in keeping with the gangster genre, however you could establish the narrative through the dialogue slightly more, it is not clear what ‘You’ll need someone who’ll last’ means, also problems with the sound.
26. It is not entirely obvious as there is no issue number, bar code or website address. The use of black and white may seem like a film poster, but it is obvious that it’s a film magazine front cover as there are cover lines, and the language used seems to hype up the film as a film magazine would. The image should also be of the actors face, image currently is not hard enough.
30. Yes the ‘Made’ font works well as it is bold and thus stands out. However, the masthead font is not bold enough for a film magazine, e.g. Empire font is very bold. The cover lines font is good as it is not too bold and overbearing, but subtle and effective.
37. Yes the ‘Made’ font works well as it is bold and thus stands out, also seems gangster, like ‘The Godfather’ font, the ‘A Martin Scorsese picture’ font looks professional and effective and the tagline font is simple and not overbearing, a subtle font to complement other standout fonts.
39. Yes the images work well, as the central image of Joe Pesci in the chair conveys power, superiority and follows classic conventions of gangster. The background shot with the man dead in the road, and someone pointing a gun at him is effective as it portrays violence, thus gangster and it looks ominous as a blurred effect is used so the face are white and hence unknown.
