![Lynch 1<br />The Fabulous Final Project!<br />The Written Report<br />Now that you’ve completed your Note Card research and Outline, you will use that outline to create a well-written, perfectly-spelled, grammatically correct final paper on the topic you have researched. Type it using 2.0 spacing. Put your last name and page number in the top right corner of each page (see my example above).<br />Introduction<br />FIRST, you must write an INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH. You must start with a general sentence and become more specific until you reach the closing sentence of this Introductory Paragraph. Start your paper with a catchy opening about the topic that you then move forward from. Here are some examples:<br />Begin with a quotation. Just make sure you explain its relevance<br />Begin with a question<br />Begin with an acknowledgment of an opinion opposite to the one you plan to take<br />Begin with a very short narrative or anecdote that has a direct bearing on your paper<br />Begin with an interesting fact<br />Begin with a definition or explanation of a term relevant to your paper<br />Begin with an analogy. Make sure it's original but not too far-fetched<br />Here is an actual example from my own 6th grade research paper introduction on tigers for science class:<br />Tyger Tyger, burning bright,In the forests of the night :What immortal hand or eye,Could frame thy fearful symmetry?<br />~ William Blake<br />Tigers are magnificent animals that have inspired many, like William Blake, throughout history with their nobility….<br />Then move from there to continue introducing the topic, be it tigers, or WWII aircraft, or whatever you have chosen! End the Introduction with a Thesis Statement.<br />Try it: What are the ideas – IN ORDER FROM GENERAL TO SPECIFIC – that you would like to put in the introduction?<br />1.____________________________________________________________________________<br />2.____________________________________________________________________________<br />3.____________________________________________________________________________<br />4.____________________________________________________________________________<br />5.____________________________________________________________________________<br />6.____________________________________________________________________________<br />Thesis Statement<br /> The thesis statement is the main focus of the paper boiled down to one concise statement. Major topics to be discussed should be mentioned in this statement.<br />Example: The thesis statement is underlined here to be visible. Do not underline it in your paper.<br /> Every year, thousands of people travel from all over the world to Paris, to see the many attractions that can be found there. The city of romance has an irresistible draw to visitors. It is famous for its elegant dining in both the old community and the new, more contemporary part of the city. However, there are a few places in Paris that no wise visitor leaves without seeing. Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre are three of the tourist attractions that are exciting to the world.<br />Try it: What is a thesis statement you think might work for the topic you’ve chosen?<br />______________________________________________________________________________<br />Body<br />NEXT, each of your categories from the outline will become at least one paragraph in the body of the paper. So your paper will have at least as many paragraphs as categories, though some may need to be broken into more and smaller paragraphs. Be sure you use good transition sentences in between so your paper flows smoothly from paragraph to paragraph.<br />Try it: What are the topics for each of your paragraphs based on your outline?<br />1.____________________________________________________________________________<br />2.____________________________________________________________________________<br />3.____________________________________________________________________________<br />4.____________________________________________________________________________<br />5.____________________________________________________________________________<br />6.____________________________________________________________________________<br />Conclusion<br />THEN, write a CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH. Just as in a closing sentence, refer back to your introduction and give a synopsis of your categories. Then end with a final summary closing sentence. The only time it is okay to give a summative opinion is in the final sentence of your closing paragraph. Previous to that time, personal pronouns MAY NOT be used in a research paper.
