6. 2010 Fall Festival Grand Marshal
Ray Batman
Ray is a native of central Illinois. He was
born in Tuscola, lived in Sullivan, and
moved to Blue Mound while in the fifth
grade. He graduated from Blue Mound
High School in 1962. He attended Lincoln
Land Community College, Lake Land
Community College, and the University of
Illinois Springfield. He is the son of Don
and Pauline Batman. Ray and his younger
brothers Bill, who died in an automobile
accident in 1970, and Jim lived with
their parents in the second house built in
Sunnyside Addition. All three boys were
paper carriers for the Chicago Daily News.
He married Nancy Jo Scott, daughter of John (Scotty) and Iva Scott,
in 1964. They had three children, Jay of Charlotte, NC, Shannon Percoco
of Champaign, IL and Lindsay Chapman of Seattle, WA. After 38 wonderful
years of marriage, Nancy Jo passed away in January 2003.
Ray found love a second time and married Missy Vieweg in 2006.
He has two grown stepdaughters, Amanda, of Charlotte, NC, and Megan,
of Decatur. Ray and Missy are the very proud grandparents of Lexi (3),
Teo (3), Logan (1) and Nico (1).
After graduating from Blue Mound High School, Ray spent two years in
the oil fields of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. When he and Nancy Jo were first
married, they lived in Canton, MO, where Ray helped construct a concrete
grain elevator. They moved back to Blue Mound, where Ray worked for
the Blue Mound Grain Company for two years, and then worked for his
father-in-law at Scotty’s Supermarket, as one of very few left-handed
butchers on record.
In 1967 the Blue Mound Jaycees and the Blue Mound Fire Department
were recruited to organize the Blue Mound Fall Festival. If those
organizations had not stepped forward, there is speculation the Festival
would not have survived to celebrate “A Century of Fun! Fun! Fun!”
4
7. Ray was president of the Jaycees and Bill Hadden was president of
the Volunteer Fireman. The two men worked very hard to create a team
approach that allowed many volunteers to enjoy running the Festival
instead of a handful of the same persons doing all the work. They had only
$7.85 to work with that year, but with several chairmen and many people
volunteering over the years, the festival continues on solid footing.
In 1970 Ray began as Dove, Inc.’s first staff person in Decatur. He served
as executive director until 1977, when he and his family relocated to Camp
Walter Scott, south of Effingham, IL.
After working as an associate regional minister for the Christian Church in
Illinois and Wisconsin for nine years, the Batman’s moved back to Decatur
in 1986, where Ray served as the finance director at Dove until being
appointed executive director in 1997.
Dove, Inc. is a multi-service agency, formed as a coalition of religious
organizations in 1970 to provide human services in a variety of areas of
need. Dove operates in Dewitt, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt and Shelby counties
in central Illinois. Its major programs include: comprehensive domestic
violence shelter and services, community organizing, senior volunteer
opportunities, emergency assistance, women’s advocacy, youth drug
abuse prevention, recycling, diversity training, and services to the homeless
population. Although Dove is sponsored by 58 area churches, its programs
and services are provided to any without regard to religious affiliation
and are not religious in content. Ray continues to lead Dove and is well
respected by the social service community for his work and advocating for
those in need.
With the exception of his brief stint as a HER magazine centerfold earlier
this year, Ray’s traditional Midwest values have guided him well in life.

8. The Original Fall Festival
“Our greatest blessings are FREE — water, air, sunshine,
and the social intermingling of kindred spirits.”
This contemplation appears in the opening pages of the 1910 Fall Festival
booklet. The original festival was held on October 13, 14 & 15, 1910.
It goes on to state that, “every condition that possibly could contribute to
social pleasure will be present — the jolly crowds, the varied amusements,
the scenes and triumphs, the splendid township exhibits, the captivating
music, the keen appetites, the delicious diners, the ever-widening circle
of friends, and the ever-changing panorama are features that warms the
hearts of all, and that even night tempts the presence of Cupid himself.”
The main purpose of the original festival was, “an opportunity for farmers
to exhibit their products…..not to offer to the public a carnival composed
of cheap shows, but a Festival which is for the benefit of the farmers and
merchants.” The majority of the first program book was dedicated to
listing the categories of entries, which ranged from mules, draft horses,
poultry, grain, food entries and artwork. The top cash prize given was $5,
though most ranged from 25¢–$2.00. Other prizes for winners ranged
from chocolates, shoes, buggy whips, cigars, coffee, flour, dishes and
canned fruit.
Some of the more unusual prizes:
• A ton of coal from the Blue Mound Coal Co. for the person winning the
greatest number of premiums in the poultry category
• ¼ dozen Head Lice Ointment from Blue Mound Pharmacy to the
winner of the Best White Leghorn Cockerel (a rooster)
• A six month subscription to the Blue Mound Leader and a ‘fine writeup’
to the lady baking the best cake of any kind
• A soup ladle to the best lady driver of a single rig (a small,
horse-drawn carriage)
• A 50¢ bottle of Corn Huskers’ Liniment from Dr. Montgomery to the
person entering the heaviest ear of corn
All entries had to be owned and produced by entrants from Mosquito,
Stonington, Mt. Auburn, Buckhart, Blue Mound, Pleasant View, Prairieton
or South Macon townships.

9. The 1912 Blue Mound Fall Festival Committee. Left to right in front row: James M. Beckett,
Ben Joestes, A.A. Bauer. Back row: E.P. Brewer, Harry Griswold, Charles Crow, Charles H.
Moomey, W. Scott Davidson and Eli Peck. W.O. Matthew was the tenth member of
the committee.
Meals were served by the ladies of the area churches. The area businesses
could compete in decorated window display contests. There were contests
for “prettiest baby girl” and “prettiest baby boy.” There were prizes given
for best decorated floats, though there is no mention in the 1910 booklet
of an actual parade. It is unknown exactly which amusements were present
at the original Fall Festival. It can be verified that at least beginning in the
late ‘teens, there were offerings of a Ferris wheel, swings, fun house and
chance games. A few traveling carnivals even offered “girlie shows” and
fixed fights, though these were later deemed to be adverse to the family
nature of the festival and were therefore halted.
The location of the earliest Fall Festivals was in the area that is now
between the present-day Post Office and the State Bank of Blue Mound.
Though much has changed since the original festival was held one hundred
years ago, it is in that same spirit that we endeavor to continue on with
this tradition. We wish you the greatest blessings, and hope you have the
opportunity to enjoy the ‘social intermingling of kindred spirits’ on this,
our centennial Fall Festival.

pointed, laughed, and even blown beverages out their
noses at Zoo Improv’s on-stage antics.

131. And so when the dear day opens,
When the tents and the booths are there,
When the gates run full with a happy flood
That rolls from everywhere,
When the bands are playing, playing,
When the bag-horns wail and cry.
And the thousands bend with holden breath
While the fattening horses fly.
We’ll think of the friends for gathering
And thinking of me and you
And we will go the festival ourselves
Just as we always do.
