2. HOMELESS
• Been defined that ‘Homeless’ is a person who does not have
access to adequate, secure and safe housing.
• There are estimates that show that around 100000 Australians
are homeless, with 1 in 35 people in the Northern Territory
estimated to be homeless in 2001.
• Groups that make up the homeless:
• Young people
• Single men and women
• Families fleeing domestic violence
• Mentally ill
• Drug and alcohol-addicted people

3. THE NEEDS OF THE
HOMELESS

4. ACCESS TO SERVICES
• The homeless have significant needs but don’t have enough
resources to access them.
• In order to survive the homeless need secure housing,
adequate health care, assistance to gain employment and
educational skills to enable them to live within the community
if they are to exit from homelessness.
• The aim of services is to provide outreach and support
services to homeless people that will enable them to access
appropriate services and long-term accommodation.

5. EDUCATION
• Poor education is a high prediction for people who become
homeless.
• People who become homeless are more likely to have left
school early and lack skills to gain adequate employment or be
able to cope with living in a community.
• Many homeless people who are highly educated but
experience great trauma lack social skills to integrate back into
independent living.

6. EMPLOYMENT
• Many barriers occur for the homeless when gaining
employment, this includes:
• Lack of adequate education and training
• Poor self esteem
• Substance abuse
• Health problems
• Mental illness
• Trying to recover from trauma e.g domestic violence
• Once the barriers have been addressed there are charities
available that have case workers that can benefit the
homeless working with the individuals and provide access to
appropriate job training.

7. FINANCIAL SUPPORT
• Financial support provides the homeless with guidance and
charity to help them survive.
• Centrelink benefits the homeless in a variety of ways for they
provide payments through youth allowance and other
payments.
• In many cases, the homeless choose not to access these
services for numerous reasons such as:
• Fear
• Drug dependency
• Mental illness

8. HEALTH
• It is very common for the homeless to experience things such as:
• Poor levels of health
• Lack of income
• Transport and knowledge about available services
• Gaining access to appropriate health care
• Medicare can provide basic medical access to citizens in Australia.
• The homeless can experience health problems due to the poverty
they live in or drug dependency. Due to this they need access to
certain services.
• Without private insurance and because of high class treatment
services this is not always possible for the homeless.

9. HOUSING
• A basic human need in our society is shelter.
• Things contributing to the cause of homelessness can include:
• Lack include of affordable and safe housing.
• More public housing and emergency accommodation are
desperately needed in Australia.
• The supported accommodation assistance program is the
largest program for the homeless. It is facilitated through
things such as mission Australia and provides transitional
supported accommodation and related support services to
those at risk of becoming homeless.

10. SECURITY AND SAFETY
• Not having your basic needs such as shelter therefore provides
very little security or safety.
• Homelessness can occur from people fleeing from domestic
violence or emotional trauma. It is completely unpredictable
and is difficult to make long term plans as short term needs
such as shelter and food are essential.
• Homeless people must be aware of thief's who could steal
their little possessions they have left or physically abuse them.
• Being homeless is an unsafe and insecure way to live. Charities
and governments are important to give hope to improve their
situation.

11. SELF ESTEEM
• There are many causes of homelessness and this can cause few
social connections. They may have lost touch with family and friends
and feel socially deprived.
• Their self esteem is very low.
• They can be against support systems due to past experiences.
• But if a person becomes homeless of abuse they will need this
support to overcome things such as:
• Guilt
• Anger
• Fear
• Depression
• To feel secure again.

12. SENSE OF IDENTITY
• With no where to live, no money or social connections a
homeless may feel they have little or no sense of identity.
• Long term support charities, organisations and compassion
from society is vital for improving the status of the homeless.
