Introduce self - welcome everyone – based on presentation at pdhpe conference. Covered a lot more tools – available from link on wiki Start at wiki – be critical and post questions as we go. Will address as we go and at end. Background of self – ICT has great potential but is only as good as the pedagogy.
Teaching can be like the donkey. Is ICT another thing we throw on the back? Take away 1 or 2 things today. Small steps What is going to improve the learning of my students?
We have access to the most powerful learning tool - are we ready to utilise this. I think the most powerful opportunities lie in the first point in sharing and networking with other teachers initially. A lot of the tools will cross over for both.
When we look at the potential of ICT and current innovations - essentially the power comes in the ability to communicate and learn in ways that were not previously possible. Communicate with teachers – share resources, network, discuss, learn Communicate with students – students have new ways to demonstrate understanding
Over the past 3-4 years the web has become far easy to publish to and create content that can be shared very easily. Social web
The number of web 2.0 tools is growing at a rapid rate and can be hard to keep track of.
Some tools that have been around a while and have proven their educational worth will be looked at today.
great site for sharing resources with others
Essentially a reflective tool but can be used for a range of purposes. Create a place to publish student work and organise class information. http://7pdhpe09.wordpress.com Class management tool - post assignments and class work and links to relevant resources - http://scomagdalene.wordpress.com Space for professional reflection
I want to use an example to show how I have found the web to be useful. My most powerful lesson this yr. Yr 8 Class - racism really evident in a class discussion and while thought I was articulating the problems of racism well I could tell they 'did not get it' I remembered a video I had stumbled across from my 'network' and knew it would be perfect. In the next lesson I showed the students this video and we had a debrief after the movie where the students showed they finally got it. All of the students who were so vocal the previous day commented on how powerful it was that they had never really understood it like that before.
When we look at new opportunities to communicate with technology some of the more powerful means involve creating and publishing work, and the conversations that can happen around that in evaluating and providing feedback. Ths can provide new opportunities for students to communicate understanding, teaching others is powerful learning and there are lots of opportunities to do this. Marco Torres - inspired in me the idea of having students create and publish to a real world audience - give their work wings. Motivate!!! Parents clip created by high school students. Drawing and voice editing - simple but effective.
collect and share resources publish student work to put into blogs or wikis.
collaborate publish critique interactive
3 questions Other ideas from the group? What would you use after today?
Just using these tools will not mean there is good teaching and learning happening. It comes down to how and why the tools are used.
