Production companies pay a large role within
the film market as they produce the media
that is consumed and purchased by people.
They’re essential to the film market meaning
that the market share is very important to
some companies and there are very little
gaps in the market for upcoming production
companies. This therefore means that this
divide creates two different categories:
Independent and Conglomerate
These generally small and contemporary
companies which have no association with
conglomerates. They have films with a
relatively low budget compared to
conglomerate made films and target a more
niche audience as less conventional genres
are easier to achieve with a lower budget.
They also suffer from greater expenses in
areas such as studio time and marketing as
they have to get another company to help
them.
These large companies can supply a large
budget towards a film. As they also need a
large profit, they generally create films which
are conventional with a popular genre, as this
is more likely to be successful. These
companies can cover the other areas of the
film industry such as film studios which
independent companies would have to out
source as conglomerates and vertically and
horizontally intergraded.
This French based production and distribution
company have several European made films
under their name. This slightly small
conglomerate is one of the biggest film
companies in Europe, and own several
cinemas and even a record label. It does
however have very little association with
Hollywood and their film culture and therefore
make more niche films which would appeal
to a more European audience.
This large American based conglomerate has
produced several forms of media a global
can consume. This includes rom coms, family
friendly cartoons and feature films and even
airing sport shows. With so many subsidiaries
under Disney’s belt, there is little reason for
them to out-source anything, as production,
distribution and marketing can be all
successfully achieved by themselves.
However, as they have a name to live up to,
Disney’s film are fairly tame and would
appeal to a mass audience to ensure
success.
This independent British film company have
produced several films which target a
more niche British audience. These films
include ‘A Kings Speech’ and ‘Macbeth’,
which were both success nationally but not
globally. This company have been known
to of out sourced their funding with the
Kings Speech receiving money from the UK
Film Council.
Film productions have to go through 4 main stages:
 Production- this is when the film is pitched to a funding
company, and once it’s approved, the film is produced. This
involves filming, script writing, editing and other tasks that comes
with making a film.
 Distribution- when a film is finished, it has to be produced so it
can reach their audience and so they can also make some
money back. This conventionally involved sending it to cinemas,
but in recent years, platforms such as Netflix gives more options
of distribution to companies for them to make a profit.
 Exhibition- this is the stage where the audience watch and
consume the film. This affects the reviews and overall success of
the film.
 Marketing- this is when you promote the film to make sure that
the film is successful and reaches it targets audience. Teaser
trailers play a factor in marketing. This stage also happens
throughout the films life cycle to make sure it reaches the
maximum amount of people.
Overall it appears that independent film companies
suffer from more problems than conglomerates make,
but they can still do well off of on a smaller budget as
less people are involved, meaning therefore that
making these niche and artistic films that they’re
passionate about is still viable. Conglomerates have to
deal with targeting a large global audience and would
have to make sure it’s a success so they can carry on
making blockbusters. For my own production, my
business model would be more like an Independent
company as we plan on making a more niche film in
terms of subject matter, and we also have very little
access to other sections of the film life cycle that
conglomerates have access to.
