BSHS LMC is proud to sponsor both READ-issance and the Bulldog Book-lovers Club as well as to assist with other literacy initiatives such as SSR. Participation in READissance has been declining the last few semesters so the READissance Committee acted on student suggestions and revamped the way students submit information on books read. Instead of filling out forms upon completion of a book, students now complete bookmarks. Student reaction to the change has been extremely positive. SSR has successfully launched with both students and teachers reading at the start of 4th block each day. Plans for an exciting way to reward students and 4th block teachers for their participation are underway and will be unveiled soon! On Aug. 29, 25 students attended our first book club meeting. Fran Atkins, US History Mrs. Atkins has been participating in the Teaching American History program over the last four years. One of the other students shared scavenger hunts that her U.S. History teachers use for various units in the curriculum. Intrigued by the idea, Mrs. Atkins shared the American Revolution Scavenger Hunt with Mrs. Bullington who purchased resources to enrich the activity for our students. Mrs. Roberts helped to tweak some of the questions and on August 30th, Mrs. Atkins’ classes came to the media center to complete their scavenger hunt. Barbara DeLac, English II Mrs. DeLac, looking for ways to increase students’ reading enjoyment, decided to use Lit Circles based on thematic novels from the library to start the year. Students chose the 3 novels that most appealed to them based on Mrs. Bullington’s booktalks. Lit Circles were created based on these choices. Students met in their Lit Circles to discuss their novels and on Fri- day, Sept. 2nd made class present-ations. Each group gave a brief summary of the novel, shared what real life application they gleaned from the book, and then shared the posters they created on the novel. The Lit Circles were a resounding success! Within days of receiving their novel, several boys had completed it and came to the library to check out the book’s sequel.
