Relationships in Ecosystems Lesson 3
How do organisms depend on one another? Decomposers Consumers Producers
Decomposers are organisms who break down dead matter into waste
Producers Producers- are organisms that make their own food using the energy in sunlight. Includes plants and algae
Consumers Consumers- are organisms who cannot make their own food Herbivores, animals who eat plants (producers) Carnivores, animals who eat other animals Omnivores, animals who eat plants and animals
What is a food chain? The path energy takes from one organism to another in the form of food. The energy of the Sun is stored in plants. Plants then give that energy to the animals that eat them. Larger animals get energy from eating smaller animals that eat plants.
What is a food web? The food chains that overlap in an ecosystem make up a food web. It shows how all the food chains interact with each other.
Predator vs. Prey Predator is a carnivore that hunts for its food Prey is the animals (herbivore or carnivore) that is hunted by carnivores
What is an energy pyramid? An energy pyramid is a model that shows the amount of energy at each level of a food web.
