Why are OA monographs important?
• Traditional print monographs
sell 200-400 copies
• The humanities are being left
behind STEM
• Humanities authors and
departments need more
demonstrable impact
• Libraries need affordable books
• The majority of researchers are
now in the developing world,
and cannot afford €40 per book
• Access to knowledge is
important for everyone

Why is funding for OA necessary?
• Open Access usually involves a one-time processing
charge (an APC for articles, or BPC for books)
• This is charged up front to cover the publisher’s
expenses
• All electronic content is then
available free of charge
• Some funds can be recovered
from print sales, but this is not
guaranteed.

A new consortium model
1. To support the growth and development
of the partner network
• Supporting a transition to open access
• Supporting university-based publishing
2. To help libraries accession OA content
• Gaining a better understanding of how to
transition collections to OA
Two main goals:

A new consortium model
• Cost per library is the same as the average APC
from a large publisher (ca. €2,000)
• Participating libraries effectively purchase all
content from the partner network, and can
therefore accession it properly
• Full MARC records provided
• On-demand COUNTER reporting

All for the cost of one average APC
