New models for Open Access Monograph funding
Books, Libraries and Open Access Seminar Helsinki, 29 August 2016
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
To return control of publishing to societies, universities and
researchers, providing them with the infrastructure and support
to not only match but to outcompete the legacy publishers.
Background to Ubiquity Press
Background
Mission
 Spun out of University College London in 2012
 Researcher-led
 Grown out of the humanities
 50+ years publishing experience
 Comprehensive approach: journals,
books, data, software, wetware…
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
Why are OA monographs important?
• Traditional print monographs
sell 200-400 copies
• The humanities are being left
behind STEM
• Humanities authors and
departments need more
demonstrable impact
• Libraries need affordable books
• The majority of researchers are
now in the developing world,
and cannot afford €40 per book
• Access to knowledge is
important for everyone
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
Why is funding for OA necessary?
• Open Access usually involves a one-time processing
charge (an APC for articles, or BPC for books)
• This is charged up front to cover the publisher’s
expenses
• All electronic content is then
available free of charge
• Some funds can be recovered
from print sales, but this is not
guaranteed.

Case study
• Published in 2016 with KU
funding as a pilot for UP
• KU members vote on books
after some months, so funding
uncertain
• Books must be ready to publish
shortly after vote
• OA publishers and authors
therefore need to take a risk
• Conclusion: KU is best suited to
subsidizing legacy print
publishers to go OA, not
promoting OA-first models

New models
Consortium distribution model
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
A new consortium model
1. To support the growth and development
of the partner network
• Supporting a transition to open access
• Supporting university-based publishing
2. To help libraries accession OA content
• Gaining a better understanding of how to
transition collections to OA
Two main goals:
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress
A new consortium model
• Cost per library is the same as the average APC
from a large publisher (ca. €2,000)
• Participating libraries effectively purchase all
content from the partner network, and can
therefore accession it properly
• Full MARC records provided
• On-demand COUNTER reporting

All for the cost of one average APC

New models for Open Access Monograph funding

  • 1. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress New models for Open Access Monograph funding Books, Libraries and Open Access Seminar Helsinki, 29 August 2016
  • 2. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress To return control of publishing to societies, universities and researchers, providing them with the infrastructure and support to not only match but to outcompete the legacy publishers. Background to Ubiquity Press Background Mission  Spun out of University College London in 2012  Researcher-led  Grown out of the humanities  50+ years publishing experience  Comprehensive approach: journals, books, data, software, wetware…
  • 3. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress Why are OA monographs important? • Traditional print monographs sell 200-400 copies • The humanities are being left behind STEM • Humanities authors and departments need more demonstrable impact • Libraries need affordable books • The majority of researchers are now in the developing world, and cannot afford €40 per book • Access to knowledge is important for everyone
  • 5. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress Why is funding for OA necessary? • Open Access usually involves a one-time processing charge (an APC for articles, or BPC for books) • This is charged up front to cover the publisher’s expenses • All electronic content is then available free of charge • Some funds can be recovered from print sales, but this is not guaranteed.
  • 6. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress How much do OA monographs really cost? • 24. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress Case study • Published in 2016 with KU funding as a pilot for UP • KU members vote on books after some months, so funding uncertain • Books must be ready to publish shortly after vote • OA publishers and authors therefore need to take a risk • Conclusion: KU is best suited to subsidizing legacy print publishers to go OA, not promoting OA-first models

  • 30. brian.hole@ubiquitypress.com | www.ubiquitypress.com| @ubiquitypress A new consortium model • Cost per library is the same as the average APC from a large publisher (ca. €2,000) • Participating libraries effectively purchase all content from the partner network, and can therefore accession it properly • Full MARC records provided • On-demand COUNTER reporting
