8. We Encourage the Use
of Social Media
Social Media is another valuable channel to
communicate amongst staff members, students, and
the public about our institution.
Through the use of social media we can communicate
quickly and effectively.
Increase transparency and receive constructive
feedback from the SIUE community.
Let’s stop talking at our staff and students and start
talking with them. Let the conversation begin!
9. The Possibilities.....
We can learn more about our students, prospective
students, our staff, and our viewing area.
Promote the work of our students and professors.
Constantly in contact with the SIUE community.
We can make valuable contributions to our
community by informing or sharing information. Ex.
MIT OpenCourseware
We can enhance our marketing area on a global
scale.
We can become an icon University for using social
media as an effective tool to our advantage.
10. We Must be
Socially Responsible
While we encourage the use of Social Media, it is
still the responsibility of the user to posts content in
a professional manner using any communication
channel.
Would you want your mom to hear what you said
or your boss? If not, do not post it!! You still have
an ethical policy to follow. You are a representative
of SIUE at all times.
You still must be aware of copyrights, trademarks,
and other forms of intellectual property.
You are responsible for any content that you post!
11. What Can I Share?
Findings from your studies and research (Please
cite findings).
Any personal comments sharing political, religious,
or ethical views should be disclaimed as your own
views (I would try to avoid these situations).
Your own personal information (within reason and
doesn’t negatively affect SIUE Staff or Students).
Genuine Content that is tied to a trustworthy
person generally results in positive outcomes.
Recent information, news, current events, etc.
Emergency Information
12. What Can I Not Share
Information about the internal operations of
our University. Ex. Bids on contracts not yet
approved, possible hires, information not yet
released by Public Relations.
Slanders about staff members or students.
Rumors that are not confirmable.
Private or confidential information about a
student or staff member.
“If You Don’t Have Something Nice to Say, Don’t
Say it at all.”
13. What Accounts Can I Setup?
You can setup any account on the Internet that
would benefit you on a professional or personal
level.
Remember that you should protect your
information and be aware of your privacy.
Once its on the Internet it is no longer private.
14. Setting Up an Account
If you are using the account to interact with
students, staff, or the public on behalf of SIUE,
please provide accurate SIUE contact information.
If you have a personal blog or social site that you
would like to share with SIUE, please send it to....
15. Don’t Know How to
Setup an Account?
We should embed videos on an informative page for
our staff to set up social site accounts, this could
also be used to inform non-traditional students not
use to social media.
16. What About My Time?
If you have time to check emails you can check
comments on your social accounts.
You may actually increase efficiency by opening
up another line of communication, rather than
using the phone or face-to-face conversations.
To ols: De skto p applicatio ns, RSS Fee ds,
FriendFeed, Seesmic, etc.
You can update all of your statuses by using
tools like Ping.fm
17. What’s Next?

Provide Examples of good and bad habits
Have the Legal Dept. Review the policy
Setup our own accounts on each site to add followers or
friends.
We Need to Be Proactive! Start a FAQ page and allow
commenting & questions. HAVE a CLASS!
Spread the social media policy to the staff Promote the
use of Social Media by launching a campaign. Ex. Tweet-a-
thon, SIUE status pride day, Squidoo, RSS Feeds, allow
comments on posted information on our site, post slides to
slideshare, tweet & facebook all events & news, etc.
