Board of Elections • Board of Elections held two separate candidate filing periods for the municipal election, during which 116 candidates were filed. • Board of Elections sent 1,630 mailings to voters that notified U.S. Postal Service of an address change. This effort takes place twice a year and helps us keep the voter rolls clean by reminding those that have moved to update their address. • Board of Elections finalized a precinct evaluation project which resulted in 18 precinct boundary changes, five polling place changes, and the creation of two new precincts. Communications July Communications Statistics Action Total Change from Previous Month Media/Open Records Requests 36 –20 Facebook Likes 13,123 +47 Facebook Followers 14,048 +58 Facebook Engagement (Reactions/ Shares/Comments) 703 –5 Twitter Followers 4,498 +28 Tweet Impressions 41,900 –5,500 LinkedIn Followers 337 +20 Cooperative Extension • Sydney Blair, 2020-2021 4-H State Reporter, and Autumn Apple, 2020-2021 Southeast District Vice President, were inducted into the 4-H Honor Club at NC 4-H Congress. • 4-H assisted the Lincoln Elementary School Garden Committee on installing a weather station for students to learn about different aspects of weather. • Camp Brunswick visited the Brunswick Botanical Garden and made their own pollinator seed bombs. • Extension Master Food Volunteers (EMFVs) met to discuss plans for fall Family and Consumer Sciences programming, which will include training new volunteers. They also practiced their cooking skills and tested new recipes together. There are currently nine EMFVs that contributed over 200 hours of service during 2020. Emergency Services • Brunswick County Emergency Medical Services was selected to join the Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinators Plus (PECC+) Program, an advanced pediatric training and education program developed by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in partnership with the NC Office of EMS and funded by the EMS for Children Innovation and Improvement Center. Twelve EMS agencies throughout the state of North Carolina were selected following an application and interview process for the highly selective program. The PECC+ Program representative for Brunswick County EMS is Kimberly Gardner, Paramedic and Captain, who will serve as the Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC). The PECC+ Program will provide specialized pediatric training, educational opportunities, and other resources to Brunswick County, including online educational courses for individual providers working in Brunswick County EMS.

Health Services • The Brunswick County WIC Program was one of six counties in the state selected to participate in the pilot of a USDA/Tufts Telehealth Intervention Strategies for WIC grant which aims to decrease barriers of access to WIC services and increase focus on tailored nutritional needs. The pilot is set to begin in early 2022. • COVID-19 funding at the federal levels has increased the WIC Cash-Value Benefits for participants to purchase fruits and vegetables to $35 per month from June to September. In the first two months of this increase in benefits, North Carolina has seen an increase in fruits and vegetables cash-value benefits redemption from $500,0000 to $831,0000. • WIC Provided Novant Health with 100 goody bags full of outreach items and pamphlets to hand out to expecting women at their annual Community Baby Shower on July 24. In 2016, Brunswick County expanded its disaster debris operations by implementing two, multi-jurisdictional disaster debris contracts. This allowed any participating municipalities to activate the contract on their own and experience county-wide costs savings. Following Hurricane Florence in 2018, the total quantities of debris managed and/or recycled under these contracts were 708,119 cubic yards of vegetative and 3,843.02 tons of construction and demolition debris. The total amount of reimbursement from FEMA was over $11,700,000.   12. 12. Mosquito Control • Mosquito Control received 93 requests in July. Staff applied larvicide to 15.77 acres and adulticided to 5,018.8 acres for adult mosquitoes. Due to five rainfall events in July with over one inch of precipitation, mosquito populations are increasing across the county. Parks and Recreation • Congratulations to the North Carolina Dixie Softball World Series Co/Runners Up (shared with Louisiana). We couldn’t be more proud of all of these girls for representing Brunswick County and North Carolina. Thanks to all the parents and families for their support throughout this season and the tournament. Thanks to all the coaches. • The North Carolina Junior Dixie Boys are the 2021 Junior Dixie Boys World Series Finalist. They fought hard in some really hot and humid conditions but in the end lost the Championship Game to Mississippi. Keep working hard Gentlemen and look forward to what the future holds for all of you. You represented the State of North Carolina well, on and off the field. Hope to see everyone back in 2022. Here are some before and after shots of a property with one participating structure. Operation Services’ construction crew performed the demolition and clearing work. Before During After Public Utilities • The Public Utilities Locate Crew provides a very valuable service to the County. They respond to more than 22,000 calls on average to locate ticket requests each year. Each ticket request averages 300 linear feet through the 811 Call Before You Dig program. This crew locates water and sewer force mains, gravity sewer, and low pressure sewer. Recently, they were tasked with locating all County public utility lines for a fiber optic project within the Town of St. James. These locates included over 73.73 miles of water lines and 72.17 miles of sewer of lines.
