2. Podcasting
• The percentage of Americans who have ever
watched or listened to a podcast is 45%, up from
43% one year ago. This equates to approximately
70 million Americans, age 12+.
• Podcast consumers continue to prefer consuming
content at their desktop, not on dedicated media
players, but mobile phone media consumption is
surging.
– Two-thirds of podcast consumers have listened to digital
audio files in their vehicles by connecting an iPod or other
MP3 player to their car audio system.

• Create a single audio file (interview, guest speaker, topic based,
event).
• Embed a single audio file (from a website) into Blackboard.
– Interview, excerpt from literary work, guest speaker, topic based, or
special event.
• Discussion board, assignment, tests, supplementary
• Have students create audio for a project.
• Topic based/ weekly reviews/ additional insight.
• Study Guide or study aide.
• To demonstrate or explain a procedure, task or assignment.
• Use a series of audio files/ podcasts as a resources or part of an
assignment.
• Embed subscription/ player to podcast directly related to your
course.

5. Podcasting
• Collection of digital media files that are distributed over
the internet using syndication feeds (rss).
– ―iPod‖ and ―broadcast‖
– or Portable-On-Demand broadcasting
• Distinguished from other digital media
formats by its ability to be syndicated,
subscribed to, and downloaded
automatically when new content is added,
using an aggregator or feed reader

8. Podcast Terminology
• Podcast – series of audio files, published on the internet
with an RSS Feed.
• Episode – actual audio file (mp3) created, uploaded and
associated w/ the podcast through RSS.
• RSS – Really Simple Syndication – type of xml file, code
subscribes users to the podcast.
• Podcatcher – (also known as feed reader, aggregator)
software that allows user to subscribe to the rss feed.
Software automatically downloads new ―episodes‖.
• Pod Directories – website or Software that contains an
index or catalog of podcasts.

9. Vodcasting
• Video podcast (sometimes shortened to vidcast or
vodcast) is a term used for the online delivery of video
on demand video clip content via Atom or RSS
enclosures.
• Requires video camera, video editing software
• Requires more bandwidth to store files
• Streaming Server for hosting the files

Many college classrooms these days may as well have
lighted signs over their doors that read "On Air" or
"Recording in Progress." A growing number of professors
are recording their lectures and making them available as
podcasts — regularly updated sets of audio files that
students can download to their computers or MP3 players.

• Choose the Music Store category on the left
• In the choose Podcasts on the left
• In the Categories column on the left, choose Education
from the menu.
• You can then choose a grade a specific education topic
from the bottom left menu More Education
– All podcast on iTunes are free, you might find a few that require
a subscription fee on other sites
– Examine the artwork, descriptions, titles, etc… for ideas
