HOW TO NOT GET SICK FROM A PUBLIC POOL
DON’T SWIM WITH THE
RUNS - Cryptosporidium
is a real thing and spreads
by slipping into your
mouth. It’s really tough for
chlorine to kill.
CHECK THE SCORES -
Pools get graded just like
restaurants. Check out their
score. If it’s not posted,
don’t go.
INSPECT THAT SHIT
YOUR OWN DAMN
SELF - Bring some pH
strips, see if the tiles
are slimy, if the water is
cloudy, and if it smells?
Chlorine smells worse/
more intense when
interacting with organic
compounds like pee.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
- Are you at risk for
certain diseases?
Are you immuno-
compromised?
Stear clear of the
pool if you are prone
to illnessnesses like
Legionnaires Disease
because you’re on
chemo, have diabetes,
or are a heavy smoker.

I WISH THIS WAS ...
Simonet Electric was a mom-and-pop shop in
the Mills 50 District that specialized in lamp
sales and repair services. The shop (sadly)
closed in 2016 and was recently put up for sale.
We think the interior is so special that we would
hate to see it become another blow dry bar or
nail salon. We wish it could become something
that honors its past by celebrating it, something
like a lamp store/craft cocktail lounge hybrid.
Instagram-friendly spaces that have diverse
means of income beyond booze, like Washburn
Imports, are a growing trend because they have
more sturdy business models. Diversity is so hawt
right now.
We propose bringing back some vintage
merchandise, keeping the name, and simply add
a craft cocktail bar/coffee shop service. Also,
maybe some paper lanterns out front to add
some “streetmosphere” because Mills 50 could
use a friendly sidewalk experience. Don’t @ us.

WE SING THE NEWS

6. RETRO RECIPES
BIKE SHARE SHAKE-UPS
Despite teasing us in February by putting their bikes on an
actual street corner prior to launch, Uber’s JUMP bike share
system will not be coming to Orlando after all. Rumors are
persisting that Lime will be pulling out of the bike business
soon to push the scooter game - because there’s more
money in it. The one constant locally are the people over at
the HOPR/Juice Bike Share offices are still going strong with
a whole glut of new and lighter e-bikes headed our way soon.
7. TheHistoryCenter.org
65 E. Central Blvd. Orlando, FL | 407-836-8500
THREE YEARS after the mass shooting at the Pulse Nightclub on June 12,
2016, this remembrance exhibition shares artwork from across the nation created
in the wake of this senseless act of violence. This Spanish-English bilingual exhibit
encompasses a variety of media and styles and includes works from across the nation
that have never been displayed locally. Admission to the History Center will be free
from June 8 – 16 to allow the entire community to experience the exhibition.
8. BUILD A BETTER CITY BY BEING BETTER TO YOURSELF.
Data being collected via the the GPS units
in local bikeshare bikes is allowing the City
of Orlando to identify streets within the City
limits that need to be made safer for bike
commuters, based on routes that are most-
traveled.
Orlando’s homegrown bikeshare program,
Juice Bike Share (now HOPR), released an
interactive map in 2016 that revealed shared
every single ride one of their bikes was
taken on, indicated by a faint orange line.
The more dense and bright the color, the
more rides have gone through that area.
According to Juice founder, Peter Martinez,
this data is what led to sharrows being
installed along streets like Magnolia Avenue
and Lake HIgland Drive, with more sharrow
routes coming soon.
THIS WAS MADE WITH SCIENCE!
11. HOLD MY HAND
A collection of photographs that capture
the activism of the fight for gay rights
in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Collected from
the archives of photographs housed
in the New York Public Library and
a companion to an exhibit currently
on display at the library. Photographs
featured were taken by Kay Tobin
Lahusen and Diana Davies known for
capturing pivotal moments in the LGBTQ
civil rights movement.
June marks the 50th anniversary
of the Stonewall uprising. These
riots are considered to have marked
the beginning of the LGBTQ rights
movement and are the reason pride
celebrations usually occur during this
month. In honor of that momentous
event, our book selections this month
include books by and about the
LGBTQ community.

13. Hank can’t remember what year the Orlando Gays That Be
decided the parade would be in October not June. June, when it
made sense. June, when the riots happened. What year did the
change happen? It didn’t matter, Hank’s beloved Gene died before
all that. On June 28 of each year, Hank honors Gene by putting on
everything rainbow in his house and dressing his dog as Dorothy,
then marching down Orange Avenue. It doesn’t matter how many
horns honk or how much he slows traffic; Hank creates his own
pride parade on the route - and date - it was intended.

The chemicals we use in pools
do not eliminate the need
to shower before hopping

overwhelmed by your funk to
fight off germs. Pee can mess it
all up too so use the toilet.

half of Americans report

14. don’t stop being funny
People are afraid to tell jokes right now.
That’s just the sign of the times, yes,
but don’t be afraid to get a little cheeky
every now and then. Just don’t talk
about someone’s boobs and think it’s
appropriate, Chad. You can still have a
laugh and be a little classy about it.
go to the effing beach
You moved here three years ago from New
York and you can count on one pasty hand
how many times you’ve been in the ocean.
That’s unacceptable. Make an effort to get
some sun and surf and remind yourself
why Florida is called the Sunshine State.
People in Canada get so little sun they get
depressed - it’s called Seasonal Affected
Disorder, or SAD. Don’t be like Canada.
make some music
Know what everyone likes when they’re
walking the streets of downtown? Music.
Share your talents and ask a bar if you can
play on their patio one day. Share the love.
stop working
Burn Out is officially a health issue now.
Turn off your computer and your brain,
and chill the fuck out. We just launched a
new column that shares day trip options
on the site.
It’s easy to get swept up in the day-to-day
hustle and flow to earn money and pay those
bills, but here’s a helpful reminder - we live in
paradise, take advantage of it!
TOP TEN
THINGS
TO KNOW
1) Straight Trippin’ ... to New Smyrna Beach (new travel column).
2) Amazon is selling tiny homes now.
3) Orchid Garden and Ballroom at Church to be demolished.
4) Unicorp to demo Fashion Square Mall.
5) Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen is moving to Maitland.
chill out, y’all
we live in florida
sip on some tea and shut up
A quick trip to literally any other country
will introduce you to the concept of just
sitting at a street cafe, having a drink, and
shutting off that phone.
stay up late
Sure, you can’t stay out past 2 a.m. at a bar
but who cares? Hang out on your porch
with some friends and listen to some chill
music. Stay up late and watch the stars
and enjoy the cool breezes, the sun will
come out tomorrow.
BRING YOUR POOCH TO THE PATIO
Not every restaurant should have dogs in
them and not every dog wants to be in a
bar, but, in certain places and at certain
times everybody likes to be having a
mimosa next to a golden retreiver. And
science says petting dogs lowers your
blood pressure. Thanks, science!
complain, don’t shame
Sometimes, slipping into someone’s DMs
or sending an email is better than putting
them on blast in public. Think twice before
posting on Facebook about shitty service
and reach out to the restaurant directly.
Stressed-out restaurateurs are more likely
to institute changes if you’re not a dick
about it. #havesomegrace

OUR CITY’S NEW
GREEN UP MANAGER
Buyas has stepped into the role of GREEN
UP manager after years as the Executive
Director of KEEP ORLANDO BEAUTIFUL -
filling the shoes of Jan Rahil, a woman who
literally shaped our city’s public spaces,
one tree at a time.
Q - JODY HOW LONG HAVE YOU
WORKED FOR THE CITY OF ORLANDO?
A - I’ve lived in Orlando for almost 20 years
and worked for the City for almost 14.
Q - WHAT IS KEEP ORLANDO
BEAUTIFUL?
A - It kind of speaks for itself - it’s a
volunteer program administered by the
City and engages residents in activities to
keep our city beautiful, promotes recycling,
and waste management.
Q - TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE
A - The actual title is Natural Resource
Manager, and it oversees Bill Frederick Park
at Turkey Lake and the Green Up Program;
it’s another volunteer program but with
more of a focus on tree planting and public
parks.
Q - HOW CAN PEOPLE WORK WITH YOU?
A - We set up a time to meet your
neighbors and take a look around
your chosen site and do a little
audit. We believe in “Right
Tree, Right Place” so we
are careful about where
we plant. We choose a
date, make sure we have
enough volunteers, and
make it happen. There
is no charge for our
services.
