Through surveys of teenagers aged 14-20, the author determined that their magazine should focus on alternative music, which is popular within that age group. The magazine aims to provide information on both established and up-and-coming alternative artists. The author chose this target audience because they are also within this age group and familiar with the genre. The magazine was priced affordably at £2.10 to appeal to students.
1. 4. WHO WOULD BE
THE AUDIENCE FOR
YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT?
2. Through the research made by my questionnaires I found that my magazine
should reach teenagers, mostly between the ages of 14-20, as my research wanted
to hear about old and new artists in the genre of alternative; which is mostly
listened to by this age group. Also, I found that most of the music magazines
bought at the moment had audiences of younger ages as they had the free time to
read and enjoy them. I also chose this target audience because I’m able to relate
to it because I’m currently within this group. Therefore, it wasn’t too hard to aim
for as I knew the kind of music within this genre and range, and I was able to aim
the contents on a personal influence.
I made the price of my magazine of £2.10, so it’s affordable for those who don’t
have a well paid job, like students.
3. When conducting my questionnaires I made sure to include relevant, appropriate questions
that would help me figure out what sort of magazine I should create. The reaction given to
what type of genre the magazine should be based on I received a majority vote for alternative
music. I then included further questions on what kind of alternative artists should be
contained by asking the question ‘would you rather read about female or male artists?’ to
which I had the answer of both and ‘what types of artists would you prefer to read about?
With the majority giving the vote of both ‘up and coming’ and ‘current’ artists. These answers
gave me a wide range of artists and information to base my magazine on, which helped give
me the freedom to create my magazine on many of artists that fell into the answers of the
questions asked in my questionnaires.
4. I also conducted interviews with people who were in my target
audience which is students. Through this research I found that
people preferred the front covers to be interesting by including
bright, bold colours in order to stand out. They also said that
the contents page wasn’t usually used unless they needed it
which meant it should included quite a lot of information in
order to help the reader as much as possible if it’s needed.
