DECADES: THE 1960’S
The 1960’s were a time of immense change – socially through the
youth counterculture movement, politically through the election of
Republican Nixon, and economically through LBJ’s Great Society
and advances in technology, but these were often overshadowed
by strong opposition to the Vietnam “War” and the continued fight
for equality for both blacks and women.

2. THE BEST

moon. This was significant to history in that
the space age brought on the advance-
ments of computers, telephone,
communication satellites that give us
direction, TV, weather, and protection.
These were the debates that aired on
television for all Americans to have an
idea on the presidential platforms.
The Kennedy-Nixon debates were
significant to the 1960’s in that they were
the first televised presidential debates ever
and it showed how television could effect
the results.

3. Woodstock was a free music festival that
attracted more than 400,400 youngsters to
a farm in New York in 1969. Peaceful and
organized but ended because of bad
opinions on the free flowing nature of the
concert and drug use. The significance of
this event is that it let the “hippies” express
their lifestyle and it brought more
importance and focus to music and other
things.

4. The Greensboro sit-ins were a series of
nonviolent protests which led to the
Woolworth's department store chain
reversing its policy of racial segregation
in the Southern United States. The
significance of the Greensboro sit-ins is that
the young-men changed the “separate isn’t equal”
in a non-violent way, and forever changing
segregation in public places.
Opposition to U.S. involvement in the
Vietnam War began slowly and in small
numbers in 1964 on various college
campuses in the United States. This anti-
war sentiment developed during a time of
unprecedented student activism reinforced
in numbers by the demographically
significant baby boomers, but grew to
include a wide and varied cross-section of
Americans from all walks of life. The anti-
war movement is often considered to have
been a major factor affecting America's
involvement in the war itself.

9. This table shows the take-off of televised debates
and conventions starting in the 1960’s with the

Its significance is that it is showing how many
people tuned into the new way of being informed
about current politics.
