Some thoughts on
collaboration
CCVS is a registered charity set up
to champion and support community
and voluntary groups, and promote
volunteering across Cambridge City,
South Cambridgeshire and Fenland.
The skills that local charities are most interested in are IT, strategic planning,
fundraising and leadership through trustee roles.
What we found
Business employees with specialist professional skills have heavy demands on
their time, so to engage them, volunteering needs to be more appealing and
flexible.
Businesses are motivated to engage in skilled volunteering as it develops staff
leadership skills, builds community links, aids employee retention and supports
employee health and well-being.
Unskilled team volunteering activities, are popular with businesses because they
are appealing to employees, but these activities are resource intensive
for charities and are regarded by most as not delivering direct benefit,
Relationship management is crucial to successful partnerships between
businesses and charities. Skilled volunteering is most likely to arise out of an
existing relationship.
Conclusions
This research has to lead
to change
To achieve this we will
need:
Funding and resources
Champions from all camps
New ways of working
A shared vision for better
communities
RECOMMENDATIONS
These fall into three distinct
areas
Enlighten
For relationships to happen, there has to be
an understanding from both parties about
how the other party works, what drives them
and what motivates them.
Engage
Once there is greater understanding of
business in the charity sector, and of
charities in the business sector, then we have
to develop ways to bring them together to
build relationships
Enable
To work effectively, it is essential that the
necessary skills and resources are in place
for charities to make the most of
opportunities.
‘We think of charities
as equal business
partners -
we gain as much from
the relationship as they
do.’
‘There is a massive appetite
among our colleagues to use
their skills to benefit others.
People get a great deal of
satisfaction from helping local
community projects and at the
same time they can gain new
skills.’‘Employees get a buzz from
helping people and some relate
to the charity as parents. It
gives them perspective and
links them more closely to the
local community.’
staff have
‘a real sense of personal
wellbeing, a sense of a
difference being made and of a
team being brought together.’
Rebalancing the
relationship
Why this research was
started
The rise of commissioning
At local and national government level
there has been a rise in commissioning
and outsourcing.
Impact of austerity of small charities
All the research shows that small
charities have had funding streams
across all areas disproportionately cut
due to the impact of austerity.
Fears expressed by small charities
Small charities worried about issues
including unsustainable payment models,
concerns about losing control and identity,
or the appropriation of ideas
Every sin is the
result of
collaboration

Collaboration Feb 2020

  • 2. CCVS is a registered charity set up to champion and support community and voluntary groups, and promote volunteering across Cambridge City, South Cambridgeshire and Fenland.
  • 3.
  • 4. The skills that local charities are most interested in are IT, strategic planning, fundraising and leadership through trustee roles. What we found Business employees with specialist professional skills have heavy demands on their time, so to engage them, volunteering needs to be more appealing and flexible. Businesses are motivated to engage in skilled volunteering as it develops staff leadership skills, builds community links, aids employee retention and supports employee health and well-being. Unskilled team volunteering activities, are popular with businesses because they are appealing to employees, but these activities are resource intensive for charities and are regarded by most as not delivering direct benefit, Relationship management is crucial to successful partnerships between businesses and charities. Skilled volunteering is most likely to arise out of an existing relationship.
  • 5. Conclusions This research has to lead to change To achieve this we will need: Funding and resources Champions from all camps New ways of working A shared vision for better communities
  • 6. RECOMMENDATIONS These fall into three distinct areas Enlighten For relationships to happen, there has to be an understanding from both parties about how the other party works, what drives them and what motivates them. Engage Once there is greater understanding of business in the charity sector, and of charities in the business sector, then we have to develop ways to bring them together to build relationships Enable To work effectively, it is essential that the necessary skills and resources are in place for charities to make the most of opportunities.
  • 7. ‘We think of charities as equal business partners - we gain as much from the relationship as they do.’ ‘There is a massive appetite among our colleagues to use their skills to benefit others. People get a great deal of satisfaction from helping local community projects and at the same time they can gain new skills.’‘Employees get a buzz from helping people and some relate to the charity as parents. It gives them perspective and links them more closely to the local community.’ staff have ‘a real sense of personal wellbeing, a sense of a difference being made and of a team being brought together.’
  • 9. Why this research was started The rise of commissioning At local and national government level there has been a rise in commissioning and outsourcing. Impact of austerity of small charities All the research shows that small charities have had funding streams across all areas disproportionately cut due to the impact of austerity. Fears expressed by small charities Small charities worried about issues including unsustainable payment models, concerns about losing control and identity, or the appropriation of ideas

  1. Thanks to PEM for the invite About me What am I going to talk about Talk about some research we have done about charity and business collaboration Ask some questions about the reality of collaboration First the obligatory advert
  2. In simple terms we provide business support to charities and community groups. We provide training, we try and represent the sector and we try and join people together – to learn from each other and to possibly collaborate! A caveat is that our emphasis is on small charities, mainly those with an income below £500K and recognising that just over half of those we work with have an income below £50K That does not mean we don’t work with bigger charities, but on the whole they look else where for much of their support.
  3. Onto the research we did into how small local charities and business can work together. This work was commissioned by Cambridge City Council and carried out last year. We know that Cambridge is a pretty unique place with some pretty unique businesses and charities so what is possible here may not be possible across the whole county. I also know if I had a tenner for every group, trustee or CEO who had said to me they were going to work with business as a way to fund their work, relieve their skills gaps, or solve their problems then I could stop any other fundraising work for CCVS.
  4. So what did we find? We got a feel for the skills that charities would find most useful if businesses could help them. We spoke to small charities and as a rule they do not have specialist roles or departments for IT or HR Not surprisingly we found that businesses do not have staff sitting around waiting for charities to ask for help. We as a sector need to recognise this and make opportunities appealing and flexible. There are benefits to the businesses in getting their staff to volunteer, this is not a one sided transaction but a mutually beneficial partnership we all need to recognise this. Team days where a group of staff paint a room or build a garden are not for everyone. Some charities do need this help but many don’t and businesses need to recognise this, and the amount of work that can go into setting them up. Relationships are everything! If charities and business are going to work together it has to be about mutual gain and it has to come from the two sides understanding each other. In short we worked out it had to be collaborative
  5. We know that times have been tough for small charities, but also why small charities are so important to building healthy communities and places where we want to live work or study. I believe that a small charity may not find the cure for cancer but they will Give your elderly parents somewhere to go to make friends and socialise They will foster lifelong loves of sports, arts or the environment They will help you get to grips with mental health or physical health issues you have. They will provide food when you need it. They will do so much more. But we do need something to help this happen We also know that we have to find ways to build better relationships and we came up with some recommendations to help this happen.
  6. We have get better at working together to enable both sides to gain, but we have to recognise the need to learn and change Our recommendations fell into three areas Enlighten, Engage, and Enable. Enlighten - For relationships to happen, there has to be an understanding from both parties about how the other party works, what drives them and what motivates them. Engage - Once there is greater understanding of business in the charity sector, and of charities in the business sector, then we have to develop ways to bring them together to build relationships Enable, we have to give charities and community groups the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to develop meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships
  7. Our case studies show it works! By finding ways to get businesses and charities to work together we can amplify and build impact., and in the long run make a bigger difference to more people.
  8. So all this talk about collaboration is it meaningful or are we saying what we think people want to hear. New research Looking at competition and collaboration between larger and smaller voluntary organisations, in the context of the competitive commissioning environment. Still ongoing, it will release a report later this year I am an advisory group member
  9. Commissioning Has had some spectacular failures locally and nationally, but has become the norm for local and national government. This has often replaced grants, especially locally. This impacts on small charities. Austerity has seen govt and individuals tightening belts, this has resulted in larger commissions, and in local govt looking to make significant savings. This had led to small organisations loosing out at the same time they are seeing rising demand and drops in other forms of income. It has been the perfect storm! And small charities are finding it harder not to be swept away. This has led to big charities moving into provision of services in areas that they would not normally have been able to. It has also led to big charities looking for small charities to partner with, not always in a way that alleviates these fears. We now have the term Bid Candy in common use. This research will hopefully lead to some good practice for how organisations can work together in the future, I hope it addresses some of the power imbalances and helps lead to more equality. I think it will highlight the need to look at collaboration differently and to change the reasons that collaborations are developed. This leads me to some of my thoughts and issues and questions
  10. Roman statesman also credited with Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness. So all in all a pretty wise man! Competition is having a negative impact on the sector, organisations, beneficiaries and communities. How do we move away from this? Commissioning and procurement practice can incentivise harmful organisational behaviour, but this behaviour is also driven by internal culture and ways of working Not all charities play nice! Organisations collaborate for a number of reasons, but often it is reactive not proactive. Organisations often make very quick decisions about what work to bid for, and whether to bid in collaboration. Organisations are not using the full range of mechanisms to work in collaboration. Finding potential partners is hard, and ways this happen often opaque This leads to my questions for you How do we balance power? How do we initiate collaboration so that it is proactive and beneficial to everyone? How do we build trust and improve communications and networking?
  11. I don’t think I have all the answers and you can see this if you read this blog I wrote last year. I am part of a partnership that won a competitive tender that led (pretty much) directly to two organisations I had worked with folding I have advocated that nationally CVS type organisations should not compete with others but when push came to shove we developed a partnership we hoped would win, and this meant some people lost I really believe that we are, to borrow a phrase, stronger together I also know that sometimes as an organisation I have to fight and fight to win. I think that there is a need for us to find new and different ways to make the most of the reality we live in. There is no money tree! To find a better way will involve being more open, communicating, working together out of desire not need, trust
  12. I really believe that we are, to borrow a phrase, stronger together I also know that sometimes as an organisation I have to fight and fight to win. I think that there is a need for us to find new and different ways to make the most of the reality we live in. There is no money tree! In the end we have to decide what is best for communities and those living in them and be humble enough to realise we alone don’t have all the answers
  13. Will let Jayne have the presentation and she can send it out. I will also post it on my LinkedIn page and on our website.
