History
History of Medals
  The ancient Greeks, whose Olympiads can be traced
 back to 776 B.C., didn't give out medals but gave out
  olive wreaths upon their victors. The medal tradition
 began with the first modern Olympic Games in 1896,
where winners got silver, seconds got bronze and third
place got zip. In the intervening 112 years, the coveted
 awards have been rectangular, ridged, doughnut-like,
gilded and for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games, shaped
   like a blob. At the 1900 Paris Games, some events
    forwent medals in favour of prizes: one pole-vault
               runner-up won an umbrella.
The Process
Brainstorming
The ideas we had for Canstruction are:
• The 3 Medals

• The Olympic Rings

• The Podium

• The Mascots

• Big Ben

• The Queen’s Crown

• Buckingham Palace
Preparation
First of all, the teachers had
organised the 2 teams. We had
heaps of meetings to work
everything out. We organised all
the fundraisers to get enough
cans or money to buy cans. The
fundraisers we had include Free
Dress Days, Book Week… All the
money was used to buy cans. We
had to figure out how many cans
we would need and the diameter.
We had to plan a lot of things to
make it all run smoothly. We
played around with the cans and
the plywood to figure everything
out.
The Maths of our
             Design
We figured out the diameter and how
many cans we would need for each
medal and all 3 medals together. The
diameter of one medal was 67cm. For
each medal, the bottom layer and the
next 2 consisted of 26 cans on each row.
The top row had 70 cans on top of the
plywood. Altogether we used 444 cans to
create the 3 medals.
Building
The teachers had sorted out the
cans into different piles so we
would know which can to use in
which place. We traced around the
plywood to make 3 circles so we
know where to place the cans. We
made the silver medal first
because it was on the side. We
decided that we would sticky tape
3 cans together vertically and
place it on the inside of the outline
of the circle. Then we placed the
plywood on top of the ring and
placed the cans all over the
plywood. We did this with the gold
and bronze medal as well. We all
had a go at building each. We
think the medals look really good.
The Roles
The roles were:
• 1 sticky-tape person: The sticky-tape
  person would have to sticky tape
  cans together.
• 2 or 3 builders: The builders would
  have to build the medals.
• 1 Google SketchUp person: The
  Google SketchUp person would make
  a Google SketchUp of the medals.
• 1 photographer: The photographer
  would have to take photos of each
  can being placed.

  • 14. History of Medals The ancient Greeks, whose Olympiads can be traced back to 776 B.C., didn't give out medals but gave out olive wreaths upon their victors. The medal tradition began with the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, where winners got silver, seconds got bronze and third place got zip. In the intervening 112 years, the coveted awards have been rectangular, ridged, doughnut-like, gilded and for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games, shaped like a blob. At the 1900 Paris Games, some events forwent medals in favour of prizes: one pole-vault runner-up won an umbrella.
  • 16. Brainstorming The ideas we had for Canstruction are: • The 3 Medals • The Olympic Rings • The Podium • The Mascots • Big Ben • The Queen’s Crown • Buckingham Palace
  • 17. Preparation First of all, the teachers had organised the 2 teams. We had heaps of meetings to work everything out. We organised all the fundraisers to get enough cans or money to buy cans. The fundraisers we had include Free Dress Days, Book Week… All the money was used to buy cans. We had to figure out how many cans we would need and the diameter. We had to plan a lot of things to make it all run smoothly. We played around with the cans and the plywood to figure everything out.
  • 18. The Maths of our Design We figured out the diameter and how many cans we would need for each medal and all 3 medals together. The diameter of one medal was 67cm. For each medal, the bottom layer and the next 2 consisted of 26 cans on each row. The top row had 70 cans on top of the plywood. Altogether we used 444 cans to create the 3 medals.
  • 19. Building The teachers had sorted out the cans into different piles so we would know which can to use in which place. We traced around the plywood to make 3 circles so we know where to place the cans. We made the silver medal first because it was on the side. We decided that we would sticky tape 3 cans together vertically and place it on the inside of the outline of the circle. Then we placed the plywood on top of the ring and placed the cans all over the plywood. We did this with the gold and bronze medal as well. We all had a go at building each. We think the medals look really good.
  • 20. The Roles The roles were: • 1 sticky-tape person: The sticky-tape person would have to sticky tape cans together. • 2 or 3 builders: The builders would have to build the medals. • 1 Google SketchUp person: The Google SketchUp person would make a Google SketchUp of the medals. • 1 photographer: The photographer would have to take photos of each can being placed.
