Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
Motivation in the workplace
1. Motivation in the workplace
I read a lot articles pointing out money is
not the factor for motivation in the
workplace. Really?
I have to disagree with this point of view.
Let’s say you have a job that you
absolutely love; the field you are in is what you are really good at and confident about.
You don’t mind overtime work since you enjoy what you do. But, here is the dilemma:
Your workplace pays you way below average and it appears that there wont be a raise
anytime soon due to the bad economy.
Now how would you feel?
Does it still make you feel that you are motivated to work? You get the point.
However, money is not the only factor that keeps motivation in the workplace high. It will
definitely help workers to reach a certain level of satisfaction and motivation by
financially rewarding them. After this point, it is important for managers to find ways to
motivate employees.
So what motivates people at work? Here are a couple of core factors to motivate
your team:
• empowerment (delegation and accountability)
• challenging work and new responsibilities
Empowerment:
Instead of you as a manager trying to solve everything, delegate your responsibilities to
the team members and trust their work qualities. In order to avoid conflict, make it clear
with an employee that what your expectations are and let them find a creative way to
solve the project. You will be surprised with the work efficiency by simply building a trust
and delegation tactic.
2. Challenging work and new responsibilities:
People tend to get bored with the tedious and repetitive work. Once your employees are
used to what they do, give them new responsibilities with challenging projects. Not only
they will learn something new and valuable lessons, they will also enjoy the new learning
experience.
