3. What is it?
Athletic event in which a hammer is thrown for
distance.
The hammer throw is one of the four throwing
events.

4. Competition characteristics
The hammer consists of a 7.26-kg metal ball
attached to a spring steel wire handle that
measures not more than 1.2 m in length.
The thrower makes three full, quick turns of the
body before flinging the hammer.

The competition is decided by who can throw the
hammer the farthest.

The sport developed centuries ago in the British
Isles.
It has been a regular part of track-and-field
competitions there since 1866 and an Olympic
sport since 1900 in Paris, France.

Women's hammer throw was first included in the
Olympics at the 2000 summer games in Sydney,
Australia.

8. Records
As of 2011 the world record for the men's
hammer is held by Yuriy Sedykh, who threw
86.74 meters.

In the same year, the world record for the
women's hammer is held by Betty Heidler, who
threw 79.42 meters.
