Mission: To connect residents, especially young adults (ages 16-24) who are underrepresented and
underserved, with new skills and paid work experiences in compelling career pathways.

What: The inaugural program of the Summer Careers Academy is “Building Our Future,” a registered
youth apprenticeship program in the skilled construction trades.
How: This eight-week summer career training program offers youth and young adults, ages 16-24,
with free in-classroom training and a paid work experience at $12 an hour and
When: The inaugural program is managed by the Home Builders of Durham, Orange, and Chatham
Counties and will take place from June 14, 2022 - August 5, 2022.
Careers: The training is focused on careers in the skilled trades, including carpentry, plumbing,
electrical, masonry, and heating and air conditioning.
Cohort: The 2022 cohort includes 17 diverse Pre-apprentices and a dozen employers from small,
mid-size, and large private companies and public organizations with occupations across the skilled trades.

In-the-Classroom Learning
Curriculum: National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) core construction
curriculum.
● Industry-recognized and widely-adopted.
● Prepares students for construction careers, including occupations in carpentry, plumbing, electrical,
masonry, and HVAC-R repair.
● Streamlined academic experience from K-12 through college.
Certificates & Credentials: Students who complete “Building Our Future” will earn:
★ Construction Core high school credit and CTE Internship course credit
★ NCCER certificate
★ OSHA-10 Certificate
★ First Aid/CPR certificate
★ College scholarships
★ Prior learning credit towards the college-level skilled trades apprenticeship programs
Bottom line: The Academy prepares participants for immediate full-time employment and/or a registered
apprenticeships so they can continue to earn and learn in their chosen career.

Schedule
Duration: 8 weeks, from Tuesday, June 14th through Friday, August 5th.
1st Week (June 14-17): In the classroom at Cedar Ridge High School from 8:30am-4:00pm.
Following 7 Weeks (June 20-Aug 5) : In the classroom Mondays and Fridays, on job sites
Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays with hours determined by the employer.
Exception: Fourth of July week (July 4-8) is off.
9. 1) Attendance: Attend all in-the-classroom and on-the-job programming. There is only
one excused absence permitted during the Academy.*
2) Academics: Pass all NCCER Core Construction modules, including but not limited to
Introduction to Hand Tools, Power Tools, and Construction Drawings.
3) Work Experience: Complete all assignments, including the Apprenticeship Agreement
Forum, Career Development Plan, Resume, Weekly Journal, Time Sheet, Reflection
Paper, Presentation, and Evaluation Forms from Employer.

Expectations for Pre-apprentices
10. 1) Paperwork: Ensure the NC Department of Labor Youth Employment Certificate is
complete (aka, work permit; if your worker is under the age of 18), and complete the
mid-session and final evaluation of your student.
2) Provision: Provide a meaningful and structured work experience for your student,
mentor them, and communicate your expectations clearly (please don’t assume the
student already knows what you expect).
1) Participation: Participate in the employer working group sessions to give us feedback
throughout the summer and complete the pre- and post-survey that is part of our
comprehensive evaluation plan.
