‘Have you got a bad habit or a strange
addiction?’
Survey results.
By Beth, Olivia and Casey
What is your gender?
The results shown us that
most of the people
answering our survey were
female, these results are
biased. We know that both
genders watch
documentaries and
therefore, our target
audience will be male and
female, rather than just
male or female.
How old are you?
When asking our audience how old they
were, the majority of people stated that
they were between the ages of 16-21. This
means that we will make a documentary
which is appealing to this age group and
therefore make it so that it is unsuitable for
children and rather made for young adults.
Although, because a chunk of our audience
is also above the age of 31, we will make
the documentary slightly related to them,
but we will mostly focus on making a
documentary in which is appealing to the
ages of 16-21 year olds, as this is our
obvious target audience.
What is your favourite colour?
The most popular colours within our
audience were proven to be:
● Blue
● Purple
● Pink
● Black
● Orange
● Yellow
● Green
Because of this, we will try and make our
colour scheme along these colours in order
for our documentary to fit to expectations of
our target audience, so that it is appealing to
their eyes.
What is your favourite music genre?
The most popular music genres within
our audience research seemed to be:
● Pop
● Rock
● Indie
Because of this, we will try our best to fit
pop, rock and indie genre music into our
documentary. This way, our
documentary will fit to everybody's
expectations and will therefore be
conventional to what our target audience
actually want to see within our
documentary.
What channel do you watch the most?
When conducting audience research and our
audience were asked what channel they
watch the most, the majority of our audience
stated that they watch ITV more than any
other of the stated channels. This means that
when we are ready to air our documentary we
will air it on ITV’S tv schedule, this therefore
makes our documentary conventional and
appealing to what our target audience want.
What time of the day do you watch TV?
When conducting audience research
and we asked our audience what time
they watch tv the most, the majority of
our audience stated that they watch it in
the night which is between the hours of
6pm-10pm. Because of this, we will
schedule our documentary so that it is
on ITV at night time. This makes our
documentary more conventional to what
our audience want and that way, our
documentary will appear as more
appealing.
What are your bad habits or strange addictions?
Because our results show that a lot
of people have a lot of different bad
habits and/or strange addictions, we
will try and include all topics
mentioned so that our documentary
is relatable and therefore considered
to be interesting by our target
audience.
If you stated other, what is it?
Our results have shown us that there are a lot of undiscovered bad habits and/or strange addictions,
because of this, we will try our best to discover who these people are what habits they have and
include them within our documentary in order to make it more interesting.
Have you had this bad habit all your life?
Our results show that it is evenly split on
whether people are born with ths
habit/addiction or whether they've picked it
up within their life. This could possibly
make our documentary more interesting
because we could research whether there
are social impacts etc on the
developments of some habits/strange
addictions.
If you haven't, when did your habit start?
Above, our results show us that there are so many reasons why people develop habits or addictions,
from the root of a breakup, stress, social impacts etc. This makes our documentary appear to have more
routes and possibilities and we can now talk about the roots of our addictions/habits, how do they
become a part of our everyday life??
Are you embarrassed about your habit or addiction?
Our results show that over 3
quarters of our audience are not
embarrassed about their addiction,
this helps us a lot due to the fact
we will be able to find people who
are willing to talk about their habits
and/or addictions and therefore our
documentary will be very
informative and therefore
interesting.
Have you tried to quit this habit/addiction?
Our results show us that over
half of the people want to quit
their bad habit or their
addiction. This gives us an idea
on who we should interview to
make sure it relates to any
viewer. For example we could
possibly find someone who has
tried to quit and someone who
has not tired and ask if she/he
wants to quit and why.
If not, do you plan on quitting?
This shows over half of the people who
have not tried to quit their habit/addiction
does not want to quit their addiction. This
then reinforces the idea of finding someone
who has not tried to quit and ask if they are
going to try or not and what is their
reasoning for choosing to quit or not.
If you were to stop, why would that be?
These results shows us that there is a slight pattern. For example the majority of people have said they would
stop their habit/addiction for a health reasons, one is because of pregnancy. Another main reason for stopping
in because of the cost of the habit addiction. A lot of people said their habit is nail biting so there are some
reasons that are about them wanting their nails to look nicer. Some people are embarrassed or are being made
fun of because of their habit and want to quit.
Are there any habits of yours that you don't consider
to be bad?
Almost 75% of people said no.
This shows that the majority of
people think that any habit is a
bad habit, that there are no
habits that are considered good.
This is a statistic that could be
read out by the voice over.
If yes, what is it?
Out of the 17 people who answered it 3
people think that pen clicking is not a bad
habit. 3 people believe that drugs are not
a bad addiction.
There are other habits there that can link
to nervous behavior such as tapping, hair
twiddling grinding teeth and pen clicking
can also go under that category. This
possibly shows that people do not think
they aren’t bad because they are linked to
a natural response to when someone is
nervous
Does your habit/addiction cost you any money?
Over half of the people’s
addictions costs money. This links
to why people would stop
because the habit/addictions may
end up costing too much. This
could be a good question to ask
because we could see the range
of prices people or don’t pay for
their habit/addictions.
If yes, would you say it is expensive?
Over half of the people’s
habit/addictions are considered
expensive reinforcing the idea of
people wanting to quit because it
costs too much money to fund.
Also reinforces the idea of it
being a good topic to talk about
when interviewing the interviewee
about their addiction. We could
see why they think it is expensive
or if the price put them off at the
start of the habit/addiction, or if
the habit/addiction didn’t cost
anything at the start but then
started to cost money later on.
Do you know anyone else who has this habit or
addiction?
Nearly 90% of people know someone
else who has the same addiction,
showing that most of the
habit/addictions are common and will
possibly be easy to find to interview a
person with that habit/addictions.
Because of people having that same
habit/addictions the documentary could
relate to anyone watching.
Do you think this habit/addiction is common?
Again we see that people think that the
habit/addictions mentioned are
common so we well be able to create a
relatable documentary aimed for
anyone who has a habit or an
addiction.
The fact that some of these
habit/addictions are common could
mean that we don’t necessary need to
interview someone with an addiction or
habit because they could give us their
opinions on what they think about
people who do things such as smoke
and take drugs, or if they find people
who click their pen annoying.
If yes, why do you think that it is common?
A lot of people see some of the habits as something someone with anxiety does or
someone who is nervous or stressed. There is also a couple people who put addictions
such as drugs and smoking as something that people are peer pressured into doing. Some
people see these addictions as something cool to do for popularity. Other people see it as
exactly what it is, an addiction, that someone can’t control Eg smoking because of the
nicotine in it that keeps people addicted to it and they then find it hard to get out of the
habit of smoking.

Over half of the people’s habit/addictions are considered expensive reinforcing the idea of people wanting to quit because it costs too much money to fund. Also reinforces the idea of it being a good topic to talk about when interviewing the interviewee about their addiction. We could see why they think it is expensive or if the price put them off at the start of the habit/addiction, or if the habit/addiction didn’t cost anything at the start but then started to cost money later on.

  • 22. If yes, why do you think that it is common? A lot of people see some of the habits as something someone with anxiety does or someone who is nervous or stressed. There is also a couple people who put addictions such as drugs and smoking as something that people are peer pressured into doing. Some people see these addictions as something cool to do for popularity. Other people see it as exactly what it is, an addiction, that someone can’t control Eg smoking because of the nicotine in it that keeps people addicted to it and they then find it hard to get out of the habit of smoking.
