                 AND
          LEARNING STRATEGIES
         ISTANBUL BILGI UNIVERSITY

PRESENTED BY C.M. HERRINGTON, MAA, MAT 1
MAKING PREDICTIONS:
WORKING WITH THE PERSON BESIDE YOU,
PREDICT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN EACH PICTURE AND
WRITE A DESCRIPTION OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE RIGHT OF EACH PICTURE. BE
                           READY TO SHARE. 

                                                                       2
WHAT OTHER PREDICTIONS DO YOU
    MAKE IN EVERY DAY LIFE?

How do predictions
help you to
understand the
world?

                                 3
FOR EXAMPLE, THE FOLLOWING THINGS HAPPEN.
WHAT PREDICTIONS WOULD YOU MAKE BASED
           ON EACH PIECE OF INFORMATION?

1. Your sister begins studying French every night and
always leaves the table at dinner to speak
privately on her phone to someone. One night,
you overhear that she is speaking in French.

2. Many of your neighbors begin selling their houses
   and moving away suddenly.

3. Your cat keeps trying to get underneath your bed,
even though you try to lock it out of the room.

                                                       4
MAKING PREDICTIONS
                WHEN READING:

What is the topic of the article? What metaphor is used in the article?

Book title: Business Over Turkish Coffee: Tips for Doing Business in Turkey

the future also differs around the world.
Subtitle 1: Family
Subtitle 2: School
Subtitle 3: Work

                                                                              5

“Brewing a Glass of
Turkish Tea”?

                                            8
VOCABULARY LEARNING STRATEGIES

Now we have determined that you are on
the Q___________ phase of the SQ4R.

• One of the main actions in this step is to write down
unfamiliar vocabulary and determine the meaning.
• One important way to learn vocabulary is by using
  guessing and context strategies.
As a class, complete the following activities to
text your ability in this area.
1. Activity to introduce guessing: http://www.english-
    zone.com/vocab/vic01.html

2. Quiz to test ability: http://www.english-
     zone.com/vocab/vic02.html

                                                          9
GUESSING VOCAB FROM CONTEXT

There are certain reading clues that you can use to find the meaning of a
                                  word.
                    These may include the following.

Deduction - What does the sentence concern? Which words does the
unknown word seem to relate to?

Part of Speech - Which part of speech is the unknown word? Is it a verb,
noun, preposition, adjective, time expression or something else?

Chunking - What do the words around the unknown word(s) mean? How
could the unknown word(s) relate to those words? - This is basically
deduction on a more local level.

GUESSING VOCABULARY FROM CONTEXT

• Behavioral patterns (2) DO NOW: Article vocabulary: Now, scan for the

• Norms (2) Tea” below, find the part of speech, word in

• Respect/ disrespect (5) a naturally light tea treated with a lot of respect
and served according to longstanding ritual-
• Over-protective (6) based traditions.”
Actions or behavior that people in a culture do
• Authority (6) because they have always done it in that way.
In my family, we have many American ritual-
• Communication style(8) based traditions that we follow on vacation
every summer. For example, we always go to the
• Matrix organization structure (8) beach and we usually have barbeques every
                                        night.

                                                                                      11
