chimpanzee. Researchers believe that an evolving AIDS
virus first spread to humans from wild African chimpanzees,
which suffer from a similar virus called SIV.

You can not get the virus by shaking
hands, hugging, touching, or sitting next to an
infected person.
You can not get the virus by sharing toilet
seats, swimming pools, bike seats, playgrounds, sports
equipment etc.
You can not get the virus by sharing
bathroom, soaps, toothbrush, towels, scrub
sponge, etc.
You can not get the virus through mosquito bites –
mosquitoes can however spread other diseases.

The HIV virus lives in:
Human blood
Semen
Vaginal fluid
Breast milk of infected persons.

14. TREATMENT
There are medicines that help people with AIDS.
These are called antiretroviral medicines.
People with aids take the following medicines to
live longer.
•D4T (stavudine)
•3TC (Lamivudine)
•NVP (nevirapine)
•AZT (zidovudine)
•EFZ (efavirenz)
HIV is a multi drug resistant.

15. HIV - A DEATH SENTENCE?
No!
Having HIV does not mean that a person is going
to die immediately.
Of course, there is no cure for HIV or AIDS.
But there are treatments that will delay the HIV
virus from destroying the immune system very
quickly.

16. TO DELAY HIV TURNING INTO AIDS, you
have to find out early and get treatment…..
You should get tested if:-
If a woman is pregnant and unsure about her HIV
status
If you had unprotected intercourse
If you shared drug needles
If you received untested blood in blood
transfusion

‘Anyone’ can get HIV! The virus infects all
races, caste, creed, young or old, healthy or
sick.
In short, anyone who has been exposed to the
bodily fluids in which the virus lives can get
HIV.

19. HIV/AIDS STATISTICS
India has a population of one billion, around half of
whom are adults. The first AIDS case in India was
detected in 1986 and since then HIV infection has been
reported in all states and union territories.
The spread of HIV in India has been uneven.
Highest estimated adult HIV prevalence is found in:-
Manipur (1.40%),
Andhra Pradesh (0.90%),
Mizoram (0.81%),
Nagaland (0.78%),
and Maharashtra (0.55%).

20. National Family Health Survey 2005-2006, HIV statistics
The National Family Health Survey, conducted between 2005 and 2006, measured HIV prevalence
among the general adult population of India, as presented in the table below. The survey found HIV
prevalence among men to be considerably higher than that among women.
The National Family Health Survey, which tested more than 100,000 people for HIV, also found
prevalence to be higher in urban areas (0.35%) than in rural areas (0.25%).
