Wikis allow multiple users to edit the same web page while tracking individual contributions. Their inherent simplicity gives users direct access to their content, which is crucial in group editing or other collaborative activities. But how can you use wikis to effectively provide collaborative opportunities in the classroom and elsewhere on campus? How do wikis compare with other collaboration applications? This session will take a look at the use of wikis in online courses and discuss other effective uses.

The innovation remit of the Wikimedia residency at the University of Edinburgh has been to raise awareness of Wikimedia and its sister projects, design and deliver digital skills engagement events such as editathons (groups of staff & student editors coming together to edit Wikipedia pages on a focused theme – both inside and outside the curriculum) and to work with colleagues all across the institution to find ways in which the University – as a knowledge creation organisation – can most benefit and contribute to the development of this huge open knowledge resource.

Librarians at Oklahoma State University have developed a three-credit course titled, “They Wouldn’t Put it on the Internet if It’s Not True: Information Literacy in a Post-truth Society.” This course, first offered during the fall 2017 semester as an elective Honors Seminar, covers traditional information literacy concepts, such as search skills, citations, source evaluation, etc., but also seeks to provide a critical lens through which students can examine information structures. Intentionally incorporating issues of race, class, orientation, and privilege encourages students a critical understanding of how awareness of, and access to, and the quality of information have demonstrable impacts on social, economic, and political well-being of individuals, especially those within marginalized populations. Students are provided with the space to grapple with these concepts, as well as opportunities to interact with real-life applications of information literacy beyond the classroom. This presentation details the development of the course, highlighting areas where critical pedagogy was incorporated into readings and class activities, reflections on successes and failures, and student reactions to the course and individual topics. Presenters also share examples of student work. Attendees will gain insight into practical application of critical librarianship in information literacy instruction.

The public digital humanities is built around networked learning communities, not repositories for content, and its scholarly product is a conversation, one that engages a broad public while blurring the distinction between research, teaching, service, and outreach. Jennifer Imazeki, Economics Scaffolded Writing and Reviewing in the Disciplines(SWoRD) is a web-based peer-review system. One of the primary innovations of SWoRD, relative to other peer review tools, is the scoring algorithm through which peer review scores are converted into student grades for both writing and reviewing. In this session, I will discuss my experience with SWoRD, which I used in Spring 2011 for an upper-division writing course for economics majors, replacing my previous system of ‘manual’ peer review (i.e., students swapping papers)

With class sizes increasing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to support research and writing activities. The extra workload associated with grading, checking assignments, and providing support outside of the classroom can become overwhelming. Through my experience in the Course Design Institute, I have learned about several tools that will be useful for increasing research and writing activities while maintaining a manageable workload. I have incorporated the use of online tools to support writing activities in a large undergraduate course, including Blackboard, Google Docs, and Wimba Classroom. In this session I will describe what worked and what didn’t work, and I will provide a brief demonstration of the techniques that have been most useful.
