QUESTION 4

• When creating our film opening we decided that our genre and, storyline for the film would fit best
with a target audience of 15-24. Because it includes violence but also we feel that the storyline would
be more attractive to a younger age group. In fact, 15-24 year olds are the highest consumers of cinema
and are early adopters in technology, brands popular culture, content junkies, social mediarists. They
are constantly on line, on the move, or on show.

• When looking at what interest our target audience the most, we see that the films come under two genres,
thriller or action. Films such as djano unchained, iron man 3 and the hangover 3 are all situated in the top 20
films for an audience of 15-24. Not only does a genre attract an audience, but there is certain elements
surrounding a film that encourage people to go and watch it. Since 15-24 year olds are also the highest
consumers of social media, it allows films to advertise to their target audience over social media since they
are more likely to come across it rather than a poster. By also releasing over social media, it means they can
advertise in various different form but also create hype around the film.

• When comparing the percentages for the hangover to the film the quartet. 15-24 year olds made up 60% of
the overall viewing audience, whereas the film the quartet the age group of 55+ made up 80% of the overall
viewing audience. These figures show us that different genres can appeal to many different age groups.
• However, the biggest difference between these two films is that the Quartet was heavy advertised by only
using posters and daytime TV trailers. For the age group of 55+ this becomes more appealing since they don’t
pick up on new technology as well as younger age groups. Another reason that day time trailers would have
been used more than any other media is because most 55+ have retired and spend a moderate percentage of
their time consuming day time television. So by advertising at these peak day time pints its more likely to
spread and attract to there target audience. Furthermore, when we compare the distribution of the Quartet
to the hangover 3 there are vast differences in the types of advertising that they used to attract their target
audience. I’ve already briefly touched on the fact that distributors advertise over social media, however there
are different ways in which they do so. Many distributors, will now set up pages that create hype for the
movie but also count down to the days till release. They do this because every so many days they will release
small snippets of the film or interviews with the cast. But the biggest form of advertisements for films
nowadays is showing a trailer as an advertisement on YouTube before watching a video. By doing so it forces
the viewer to watch it but in most cases then sparks their interest to view it in cinemas.
• Overall our target audience is 15-24 due to the fact they are the highest consumers of film within a
cinema. They are early adopters of new technology and media, which means distributors can advertise
over social media knowing that it will reach a wide audience. They are the best consumers of thriller
and action, because of these reasons I feel they are our best target audience.

Not only does a genre attract an audience, but there is certain elements surrounding a film that encourage people to go and watch it. Since 15-24 year olds are also the highest consumers of social media, it allows films to advertise to their target audience over social media since they are more likely to come across it rather than a poster. By also releasing over social media, it means they can advertise in various different form but also create hype around the film. • • When comparing the percentages for the hangover to the film the quartet. 15-24 year olds made up 60% of the overall viewing audience, whereas the film the quartet the age group of 55+ made up 80% of the overall viewing audience. These figures show us that different genres can appeal to many different age groups.
  • 4. • However, the biggest difference between these two films is that the Quartet was heavy advertised by only using posters and daytime TV trailers. For the age group of 55+ this becomes more appealing since they don’t pick up on new technology as well as younger age groups. Another reason that day time trailers would have been used more than any other media is because most 55+ have retired and spend a moderate percentage of their time consuming day time television. So by advertising at these peak day time pints its more likely to spread and attract to there target audience. Furthermore, when we compare the distribution of the Quartet to the hangover 3 there are vast differences in the types of advertising that they used to attract their target audience. I’ve already briefly touched on the fact that distributors advertise over social media, however there are different ways in which they do so. Many distributors, will now set up pages that create hype for the movie but also count down to the days till release. They do this because every so many days they will release small snippets of the film or interviews with the cast. But the biggest form of advertisements for films nowadays is showing a trailer as an advertisement on YouTube before watching a video. By doing so it forces the viewer to watch it but in most cases then sparks their interest to view it in cinemas.
  • 5. • Overall our target audience is 15-24 due to the fact they are the highest consumers of film within a cinema. They are early adopters of new technology and media, which means distributors can advertise over social media knowing that it will reach a wide audience. They are the best consumers of thriller and action, because of these reasons I feel they are our best target audience.
