On Sunday March 16th, nearly 50 local producers gathered at the historic Grain Belt Bottling house in Northeast Minneapolis to display, present, their local products. This private event was produced by Midwest Pantry, which produces events on behalf of a collective of local producers based in the Midwest region of the United States. Each producer is screened to ensure they are properly licensed, insured, have shelf-ready products and can meet the demands of the open market. Wholesale buyers were invited to attend to learn about the wide variety of local products available to them. Samples were tasted, wholesale prices were discussed, and orders were placed. These buyers are knowledgable about their customers needs, savvy about selling, and supportive of the local movement. There was tremendous support from independently owned businesses from throughout the state of Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area, and the state of Wisconsin. This was a true victory for local food and small business. Opportunities like this are not often presented to local producers of this size. It is equally true that independent store owners would normally have to travel to a coast to find a collection of quality producers of this calibre. Midwest Pantry's effort to establish the Local Food & Gift Show allows both producers and retailers keep the cost of local products as low as possible by removing the exorbitant cost of traveling across the country to find locally made, quality products.
