Keeping your staff abreast of what is
happening in the company creates trust.
Insecure bosses restrict and control the flow
of information to cement their place in the
hierarchy.
Doing this alienates you from the team and
does nothing to build trust.

3. Being inconsistent
Nothing is more frustrating than a boss that
is inconsistent when it comes to making
decisions.
This discourages proactive behaviour and the
use of initiative as staff cannot know with any
certainty if their new ideas or proposals are
within your acceptable boundaries.

4. Taking the credit,
passing the blame
Taking all the credit when things go well but
throwing the team under the bus when
things go wrong is never good for morale.
Taking the heat for your staff's mistakes
never gets easier. But let's be fair, you will
often be recognised for the hard work they
put in.

5. Unreasonable demands
Setting ridiculous targets, constantly moving
the goal posts or expecting staff to be on call
24/7 is a surefire way of burning them out.
Have high expectations for your staff, but be
reasonable.

6. No interest in
talent retention
Bad bosses think they can work their staff to
the bone and replace them when they
eventually get burnt out. However, unfilled
positions means work not done. Even when
filled, there is a learning curve before new
hires are productive. This mentality is
expensive and hurts your productivity.

7. Micromanagement
Micromanging is often associated with
bosses who are control freaks. But,
micromanagement could be a sign of an
insecure boss who wants to be seen as an
expert or authority figure.
You must be able to delegate not just tasks,
but authority as well.
