INTRODUCTION
This assignment involved a combination of Building Materials, Construction Technology
and measurement, in which each student are required to write down a report regarding
the site visit to the construction site. Since there are about 45 students in our course, we
were to be divided into two groups on the day of the site visit. As for me, I was among
those in group 1. In fact the site visit was organized by Miss Ang Fuey Lin to be held on
the 21 November 2014.
The site called D'Latour, developed by the Penang-based DK-MY Properties SDN BHD
was located at the following address:
No.4, Jalan PPU 3, Taman Perindustrian Puchong Utama, 47100 Puchong, Selangor
Darul Ehsan.
It is actually at a walking distance from our school, Taylor's Lakeside University
Campus. So it is convenient for us to walk to the site directly from Taylors. On the
eventful day, those who are in group 1 are to be there on time at 9:00am sharp. We
must also comply to the rule and regulations that we must wear our helmet, long pants
and safety boots when entering the site. Then we are given a tour of the place by a few
site contractors who are nice enough to give us a thorough explanation of of the
materials, technologies and structures involved. Accompanying us are a few of our
lecturers.
D'latour comprises of two 23-storey towers with 332 serviced suites in one and 629
SoHo duplexes in the other. It occupies three acres and has a total built-up area of 1.7
million sq. ft. Curving gracefully up into the Bandar Sunway skyline, it is built to master-class
quality and infused with the most demanding standards. Comprising two designer
towers( D'Latour SoHo and D'Latour Residence),D'Latour is set to become the next big
thing in terms of residential landmark in Bandar Sunway.
It one of the kind design features includes:
 Vertical garden city concept
 Internal void area for better natural ventilation
 Elevated infinty swimming pool with waterfall feature
 Environmental friendly Sky Garden at various at various floors
 Roof Top Sky Hub
 Distinctive 'Welcome Home' lobby
 The designer of D'Latour was the world-class architecture company RDA Harris
Architects Sdn Bhd which is responsible for the design of multiple award winning
developments around the world.
OBJECTIVE
The objectives of the site visit are as followed:
 To enable us to get firsthand experience on the actual working environment of
the life of a quantity surveyor on site.
 To further enhance our knowledge on the step by step involvement of the
construction process.
 To allow us to have a deeper understanding on the types of building materials
and construction technologies on site.
 To raise awareness on the importance of taking care of our personal safety as
well as taking the precautionary steps to prevent accidents from arising.
 To be able to gather new construction knowledge that we have never learnt in
class.
 To allow us to have a better grasp of how importance teamwork and
communication skills are to construction team such as engineering, project
managers, contractors and workers.
 To able to get first -hand knowledge on the functions of the usage of machineries
on site
 Able to get a clearer image on the structures that we are unable to see.
CONTENT
Once we have arrived at the site, the first thing that caught my eyes is the precautionary
sign board outside the entrance the site. This is to make sure that we are following the
proper rules and safety regulations required of us. Along the outside surrounding area
of the site fenced by vertical hording lies the project information board. It clearly give me
a clearer picture of the architects, quantity surveyors, developer involved and the
estimated time it takes for the project to finish. The usage of the vertical hoarding is to
stop unauthorized person access into the site.
Not a far distant away, we can find a guard house to guard against unauthorized person
access into the site. The guard house is made of plywood and zinc roofing. Then we are
guided into the site by a few of our lecturers accompanied by some site contractors.
Along the way, we are able to get a glimpse of some of the workers inside their
temporary houses resting themselves and temporary toilets for them to do their
business.
Along the surrounding area of the structural buildings lied a few independent scaffolding
with safety net casts around it to prevent workers from falling down. Each scaffolding
has stair like structures built to allow workers easy to move about. The material used for
the scaffolding is steel. The scaffolding can also be assembled and disassembled. It is
to provide employees safer access to work locations, level and stable working platforms
and temporary storage for tools and materials for performing immediate tasks.
Through the information we gathered from one of the site constructor, the type of piling
used for the building is micro-pile. It is another type of pile which acts as a supporting
structure to transfer the load from the building to the ground. Micro-piles are small
diameter piles constructed by the drilling process and are often keyed into rock. There is
various diameter of micro-pile that can be found in the market ranging from 100mm to
250mm. Micro-pile is used to meet the demands for low noise and vibration regulations
especially in congested environments around the site.
There are also different types of machineries found on the site like tower crane, the
normal type crane, saw for cutting the required size of the reinforcement bars and silent
generators. As in any other site, the tower crane is a common sight to behold. It is
normally employed in the construction industry for the movement of materials such as
steel, concrete, large tools and generators. This is because it gives the best
combination of height and lifting capacity. Meanwhile the silent generators are installed
to supply electricity to main part of the buildings especially electrical machineries. There
is also the used of mobile access tower being used for the convenient of the workers
when continuing their work on the basement of the buildings.
The types of formwork required are:
 Beam formwork
 Column formwork
 Slab formwork
As we investigated around the vicinity of the area, we have found out from the site
constructors on the different types of formwork used. Formwork is an artificial support
provided below and around the precast or cast in-situ concrete work. The types of
formwork are as followed:
 Steel formwork
 Timber formwork
 Plywood formwork (Table formwork)
Steel Formwork
Steel Formwork consists of panels fabricated out of thin steel plates stiffened along the
edges by small steel angles. The panel units are held together through the use of
suitable clamps, bolts and nuts. Steel forms are mainly used on the site where large
number of reuses of the shuttering is possible. This type of shuttering is considered
most suitable for circular or curved structures.
ADVANTAGES
It is reusable for a number of times
 Smooth finishes are obtainable
 Easy to fixed
 Uniform size and surface
 Very strong and able to withstand heavy loads
 More durable than timber formwork
DISADVANTAGES
 More expensive than wood formwork
TIMBER FORMWORK
ADVANTAGES
 Easy to handle because of it light-weight
 Easy to disassemble
 Damaged parts can be replaced with new ones
 Very flexible
 Easy to produce
 Easily available
DISADVANTAGES
 Have limited reusability
TABLE FORMWORK
It is a table form that is a large pre-assembled formwork and false work unit to form a
complete bay of suspended floor slab. This type of formwork offers mobility and quick
installation that is highly suitable for flat slab, beam and slab layouts. It is a simple
structure which is easy to assemble and disassemble and be reused.
Once the assembled table formwork units are placed into position and the joints sealed,
reinforcement is then fixed and the concrete for the slab is cast. After the concrete has
achieved sufficient strength, the complete table is lowered from under slab before
moving to the next position by crane.
ADVANTAGES
 Fast construction for large floor layouts.
 Fully assembled units can be manoeuvred quickly into place.
 Using appropriate quality control, high quality surface finishes can be achieved.
 Reduced long-term workforce requirement on site.
 The need for infill areas and decking joints is minimized.
 Individual components of the formwork system can be precisely adjusted.
 Repetitive nature of the work makes it easier to plan construction activities.
DISADVANTAGES
 Cost of materials and use of cranes are expensive
As we walk in and out of the building, I managed to spot some building materials like
starter bars, PVC pipes, Stirrups, linkers, flat anchorage, telescopic props, concrete and
many more either lying in a heap to be used later or already installed in place for its
specific function. This does shows for that specific type of buildings, it involves a lot of
materials just to construct it. Material storage can also be found in one part of the
corner. That is used to store materials and be used for future purposes. Further inside
of the construction building, there will be a few independent scaffolding in placed for the
workers to climb above to continue on with the progression of their works.
Moreover, the concrete used for almost all part of structural building is grade 40. As the
concrete grade increases it strength will also increase. However grade 35 concrete can
also be acted as another alternative. Meanwhile concrete grade 15 and grade 20 is
used for column and slab respectively. Due to the increased in strength in concrete, it is
more than enough to withstand fire and forces. As the duration of the one hour spent
have concluded, I managed to take some useful pictures of the stuffs that caught my
eyes. Not only that I was able to identify the types of materials and technologies
involved in the entire site.
CONCLUSION
After the site visit, I was able to gain countless of valuable information and knowledge
from the construction site. It is to give us an idea of how our line of work will be when we
eventually graduate and started working as a qualified quantity surveyor.
Through this visit, I was able to expand my knowledge by exploring the different types of
building materials found on site. This same type of building materials are going to be
used for the construction of the building. All of this is going to enhance my theory
knowledge in relation to notes given by the lecturer by applying practical knowledge as
to how the materials are being applied on site. The constructors also give a thorough
explanation on the usage and functions of the types of construction technologies
available to them on site.
Furthermore I have witness how important it is for communication to exist between the
construction team. For if there is communication between the construction committee,
they tend to work in according to plan to try finish the construction within the duration of
the time limit given. So as a result of that the whole entire operation will be run smoothly
without any incidents.
Other than that, there is the importance of safety that we need to bear in mind when
entering the premises of a construction site. We were given a brief talk on the
importance of safety by the safety officer before we continue on with our visit. From then
I realized how importance safety is not only to us visitors but also to workers involved in
the construction site. So to abide to the rules, we are required to wear a safety helmet
and safety boots at all times on site. To put further practice of awareness among us,
there will be safety precautions signboards placed around the buildings to remind of
there will be dangers looming around the corner if we are abide to the safety rules and
regulations
In conclusion, I believe that this site visit is a very worthwhile one to be in. Since this site
visit is the first chance I have to visit a construction site, I really hope to be given a
similar chance in the near distant future as it not only enhances my knowledge on the
materials and technologies it also is beneficial to my future.

TIMBER FORMWORK ADVANTAGES  Easy to handle because of it light-weight  Easy to disassemble  Damaged parts can be replaced with new ones  Very flexible  Easy to produce  Easily available DISADVANTAGES  Have limited reusability TABLE FORMWORK It is a table form that is a large pre-assembled formwork and false work unit to form a complete bay of suspended floor slab. This type of formwork offers mobility and quick installation that is highly suitable for flat slab, beam and slab layouts. It is a simple structure which is easy to assemble and disassemble and be reused. Once the assembled table formwork units are placed into position and the joints sealed, reinforcement is then fixed and the concrete for the slab is cast. After the concrete has achieved sufficient strength, the complete table is lowered from under slab before moving to the next position by crane. ADVANTAGES  Fast construction for large floor layouts. DISADVANTAGES  Cost of materials and use of cranes are expensive
  • 8. As we walk in and out of the building, I managed to spot some building materials like starter bars, PVC pipes, Stirrups, linkers, flat anchorage, telescopic props, concrete and many more either lying in a heap to be used later or already installed in place for its specific function. This does shows for that specific type of buildings, it involves a lot of materials just to construct it. Material storage can also be found in one part of the corner. That is used to store materials and be used for future purposes. Further inside of the construction building, there will be a few independent scaffolding in placed for the workers to climb above to continue on with the progression of their works. Moreover, the concrete used for almost all part of structural building is grade 40. As the concrete grade increases it strength will also increase. However grade 35 concrete can also be acted as another alternative. Meanwhile concrete grade 15 and grade 20 is used for column and slab respectively. Due to the increased in strength in concrete, it is more than enough to withstand fire and forces. As the duration of the one hour spent have concluded, I managed to take some useful pictures of the stuffs that caught my eyes. Not only that I was able to identify the types of materials and technologies involved in the entire site.
  • 9. CONCLUSION After the site visit, I was able to gain countless of valuable information and knowledge from the construction site. It is to give us an idea of how our line of work will be when we eventually graduate and started working as a qualified quantity surveyor. Through this visit, I was able to expand my knowledge by exploring the different types of building materials found on site. This same type of building materials are going to be used for the construction of the building. All of this is going to enhance my theory knowledge in relation to notes given by the lecturer by applying practical knowledge as to how the materials are being applied on site. The constructors also give a thorough explanation on the usage and functions of the types of construction technologies available to them on site. Furthermore I have witness how important it is for communication to exist between the construction team. For if there is communication between the construction committee, they tend to work in according to plan to try finish the construction within the duration of the time limit given. So as a result of that the whole entire operation will be run smoothly without any incidents. Other than that, there is the importance of safety that we need to bear in mind when entering the premises of a construction site. We were given a brief talk on the importance of safety by the safety officer before we continue on with our visit. From then I realized how importance safety is not only to us visitors but also to workers involved in the construction site. So to abide to the rules, we are required to wear a safety helmet and safety boots at all times on site. To put further practice of awareness among us, there will be safety precautions signboards placed around the buildings to remind of there will be dangers looming around the corner if we are abide to the safety rules and regulations In conclusion, I believe that this site visit is a very worthwhile one to be in. Since this site visit is the first chance I have to visit a construction site, I really hope to be given a similar chance in the near distant future as it not only enhances my knowledge on the materials and technologies it also is beneficial to my future.
