Pr1 how do we analyse film
1. How do we analyse a Film?
Introduction
There are many ways to analyse films by using genre analysis and Auteur
theory a director uses many theories such as genre analysis also there are
many ways to analysis a film such as using techniques such as codes and
conventions codes and conventions are where throughout the film what makes
it the action, thriller, comedy, teen horror film for example in an action thriller
spy film there would be codes and conventions such as guns, fast cars, suites,
and of course in every action thriller spy film there are scenes where female
representation is taken place for example where females are sexually
objectified both important features for the male and female audience an
example of this being used in a film is quantum of solace directed by Mark
Foster in the year 2008 its genre is Action Spy Thriller and the director gets all
of the codes and conversions of an action thriller in the film for example during
the film codes and conventions are shown in the film by nearly every person in
the film has guns fast cars suites smartly dressed and during the film and
throughout male and female representation is shown as Daniel Craig who Plays
and takes on the persona of the well know James Bond is shown to be the
protagonist energetically smartly dressed who is tough and a rugged guy with
good looks this brings in the females viewers also throughout the film there is
the female actress an Ukrainian born actress and model she like bond grabs
the viewers’ attention she is and female representation takes place she is
sexually objectified throughout the film Olga kurylenko
who plays and takes on the persona of this sexy female
actor called Camille who is in love with 007 James Bond
Daniel Craig she is shown to flirt and be attracted to her
and also we get signals where we are jealous as James Bond gets the girl who
we are all after also the same with the women as the protagonist James Bond
gets the girl that the viewers and the audience all want. The cars in the codes
and conventions play a huge part in any action thriller spy film in the opening
2. scene of quantum of solace there is an action scene where a super car Aston
Martin DBS in black the scene starts off with fast approaching editing
technique called cross cut where it is
crossing from the protagonist point of view
where he is trying to escape from the
protagonist the bad guys and then the
camera would cross cut to the bad guys
the protagonist firing and shooting it
shown scenes where James Bond Is
Drifting the Aston MARTIN the Aston martin represents British power and
engineering. So we get to see the Mice on scene where we are with James
Bond and then with the bad guys getting a sense of what both sides are after
and what they do to achieve it. All of the codes and conventions break to
conformity to genre. Another way we analyse a film is where we look at the
setting of the film and weather it breaks to conformity of genre or not. In the
film Leon Directed By Luc Benson in the year 1994 we can see that the codes
and conventions in this film are similar to the James bond films with the guns
suites costumes drugs cash crime female representation anther code and
convention is the yellow taxi this can come under iconography such as what
can you see that stands out that it is in new york for example yellow taxis the
empire state building and the new york central park what makes a good film is
the understating ding of the character an example of this is we expect with all
of the codes and conventions such as fast cars action and the guns drugs crime
we expect to see an protagonist who is rouged looks good lucking tough guy
with a licence to kill such as James bond however Leon is very very different
because we don’t see this in mind we still picture this tough guy James bond
gets all the ladies female representation with Leon we don’t really see him at
the beginning we great t0 see him on the subway very very discreet very
monosyllabic unconventional old wearing sunglasses the hat the beard he
doesn’t look like a killer at first or a spy however he is the most dangerous
killer in the film so character representation is very important when analysing a
film. Another way to analyse the film of character is technical features for
example during the first scene when we get to see Leon we only get to see his
mouth and his eyes camera work is very important also sound the way he talks
at first we expect a very American accent however he sounds foreign at first.
3. The character does not conform to the genre. The themes throughout the film
Leon are Revenge love and friendship and good triumphs over evil. There is
love because of the character Mathilda aged 14 years old but plays a 12 year
olds girl who is in love with Léon who we suspect her dad beats her we feel
sorry and emotional for her. Narrative enigma is used as we know what
happens because she has bruises and she asks Léon not to tell her dad that she
is smoking a cigarette and she has a bruise on her face we get the sense that
her dad beats her this is called narrative enigma. And we want to know about
the relationship between her and Leon. Love and friendship is a key theme as
we suddenly throughout the film get to know Léon and mathilda and they
become close as the corrupt drug enforcement agency officials D.E.A and the
antagonist killed all of mathilda family including her little brother who she used
to look after mathilda goes to the store for Léon for some milk and as she
returns she finds her apartment filled with Hench men’s and blood and her dad
in the corridor dead she walks past portending
that she doesn’t know her family she is
pretending that she is leons daughter and that
she walks past her apartment otherwise if they
find out that she is part of there family then he
will get killed so Léon has a dilemma weather
to get involved and get himself involved and
in trouble or does he leave the door shut and
not get involved and leave him to his life the picture below shows his dilemma
a as you can see the arrow shows it being the Hench man waiting for mathilda
to go in or does she. This is very uncomfortable for the viewers as Leon has a
dilemma weather or not to open the door also another thing that makes it
uncomfortable for the viewers is the love between Leon and mathilda because
she is very sexually attracted to Leon this is very uncomfortable narrative to
watch as she is only 12 after Leon letting her into the apartment he then starts
to train her on becoming a hitman this is where the theme revenge comes Into
place. Later throughout the film after a huge gun battle between mathilda Leo
and the corrupt drug enforcement agency officials D.E.A Léon dies however
saving Mathilda in the process and letting he survive and tells her to go to
Tony’s restaurant however throughout the film we sense sad and emotion
throughout the film and the theme love as well and when Léon dies all of these
4. emotions comes back into our minds as he lets Mathilda Live and he thinks
that he will met her there however he is walking out and he goes to exit in the
uniform and wearing a helmet being undercover so no one can see him he is
walking to the exit when Stanfield shoots him and fall to the ground this is the
final action scene and Léon pulls a grenade and says “this is from Mathilda.”
And killing satisfied and himself in the process. The denouement in this film is
tony he helps Mathilda in the end and helps her find her roots and gives her
leons money from being a hitman all the years and the final scene is where
Mathilda goes to the School and plants a tree in the garden this symbolises
Leon in the end and we get this warm feeling that mathilda life is going to be
okay she is going to live there and everything will be fine as long as that plant is
there to symbolise mathilda then her life will be fine the ideological message of
leon is that good will triumpoh over evil and that goodness will prevail .
Another film to analyse is not like the others it is a very typical American prom
romance teen comedy film the film is called Mean girls the codes and
conventions are very different to the others the codes and conventions are
books dairy monologue, sports kit American jacket schools logo, mall, mobile
phones, fashion, pink clothing, all of these conform to the genre of a teen
comedy the technical features to this film are the sounds the sound is voices
rather than non-diegetic another feature to analyse is the setting of the film
this is the High school Parents house dining room football stadium and of
course the hall of the prom. The technical features of this is the Mise en scene
the setting in this film does break conformity and conforms to the genre, the other
feature in mean girls is the themes of love friend ship, acceptance, sex, jealousy and
individually. With the main character Cady and the popular girl Regina cady is
always trying to get in with the cool and popular group the technical feature of this is
editing and eye line match this is nothing like the other films that I have analysed
