Second Brazilian Farming Olympics (OBAP)
Regulation
1. OBJECTIVES
OBAP aims to foster young students of secondary and post-secondary vocational
education1 to join science and technological careers through research and innovation in
agriculture, scientific knowledge application, challenges and cooperation among the
participants of the olympic activities. It is expected to motivate students to participate in
undergraduate research, regional development and innovation, thus returning to society
the benefits from public education improvements in the field of agriculture.
2. PARTICIPANTS
2.1 Secondary vocational students of the following courses may enroll in the Olympics:
Farming, Agricultural, Agroecology, Animal Breeding, Agribusiness, Food, or any course
with agribusiness or natural resources as major technological theme (National catalog of
vocational education http://catalogonct.mec.gov.br/).
2.1 Post-secondary vocational students may participate according to special rules defined
by Annex I.
2.2. Teams will consist of four people from the same institution, with the obligatory
participation of one supervisor and three students.
2.3. Students must be properly enrolled in secondary or post-secondary vocational
education courses related to agricultural sciences (see courses listed above).
2.3.1. A team must not be composed of students of different modalities of learning.
2.4. Teachers and permanent or temporary members of the administrative staff may enroll
as tutors, since they are working at the home institution of the students who make up the
team.
2.4.1. Each tutor must guide only one team from each type of education (e.g., secondaty
or post-secondary vocational education).
2.5. There is no limit to the number of registered teams per institution.
3. REGISTRATION
3.1. Registrations will be received exclusively via internet on the OBAP official homepage
(www.ifsuldeminas.edu.br/obap) during the period May 14 to June 29, 2012.

In Brazil, secondary education usually prepares for university, which might concentrate on abstract,
scientific and theoric knowledge, whilst vocational focuses on job skills in technology, craftmanship or
administration. In secondary vocational education, vocational and secondary education occur alongside; in
post secondary education, vocational education occurs after the student has obtained a secondary education
degree. However, both secondary and post secondary vocational courses share the same content.
2. 3.2. The tutor will represent the team for the sake of the registration and must feed all the
theam members’ data into the registration forms.
3.3. After fulfilling the registration form, the tutor must pay the R$ 20 (twenty reais)
registration fee via bank billing. This amout is for the entry of the team.
3.3.1. Each team must pay their registration fee.
3.3.2. Entries are valid just after payment is confirmed.
3.4. There are not discounts or fee exemptions.
3.5. Paid fees amounts will not be returned by no means.
3.6. Once validated the team’s registration, the tutor will receive via email the team login
which with access the “Plataforma de Provas da OBAP” (OBAP Test Virtual Environment),
available at www.ifsuldeminas.edu.br/obap.
3.7. At any time, if any irregularity is identified, the team staff will be notified and
automatically disqualified.
4. STAGES AND TESTS
4.1. The competition has four stages, three of them being virtual and one being presential:
4.1.1. Stage One (virtual - classification) from 2012-08-06 to 2012-08-10: ten multiple
choice questions about agriculture.
4.1.2. Stage Two (virtual - classification) from 2012-08-13 to 2012-08-17: ten multiple
choice questions about animal breeding.
4.1.3. Stage Three (virtual - and qualifying round) from 2012-08-20 to 2012-08-24: twenty
multiple choice questions about agriculture and animal breeding. Each one of these
questions values two-fold.
4.1.3.1. Just the teams with 70% or more in the sum of the virtual three stages will be
classified to the fouth stage.
4.1.3.2. Fifty secondary vocational education teams, classified according to 4.1.3.1 item,
are going to participate in the fouth stage.
4.1.3.3. Ten post-secondary vocational education teams, classified according to 4.1.3.1
item, are going to participate in the fouth stage.
4.1.3.4. In the event of a tie score, the third stage start time is going to break it, coming
from the lowest elapsed time since the opening of that stage to the highest.
4.2. OBAP organizers are only liable for the operation of the OBAP homepage and its Test
Virtual Environment, helding no responsible for the participants’ internet provider failures,
equipment failures or electrical power outages. In case of OBAP system failure,
IFSULDEMINAS system failure or contrywide system failure, organizers may extend the
stages terms.
3. 4.3. Fifty secondary vocational education teams, and ten post-secondary vocational
education teams, both classified according to 4.1.3.1 item, are going to participate in the
fourth stage.
4.3.1. If any team classified for the fourth stage does not confirm presence, OBAP
organizers will call up other teams according to the ranking list.
4.4. Stage Four (presential) from 2012-10-11 to 2012-10-12: just students will be allowed
to participate in this stage. This stage has two phases:
4.4.1. First phase (elimination): teams should send a case study on the Olympics topic:
innovation and business. This query is worth double. Scoring criteria and rules are going to
be established in a study to be released in March.
4.4.1.1. Submitting the case study is a prerequisite for participation in the presential phase.
4.4.1.2. The case studies are expected to be received from September 3 to 6, 2012.
4.4.2. Second phase (classification): students will individually answear a test consisting of
20 multiple choice questions with worth triple and 2 multiple choice questions with worth
double. All the questions are about agriculture and animal breeding. The individual scores
average will be added to the team's final score.
4.5. The virtual stages will be accomplished via OBAP homepage, by teams loggin in with
identification and password.
4.5.1. A team has fifty minutos to answear each virtual stage test. It’s not possible to
change the answears after sending the test.
4.5.2. Access to the on-line platform is allowed only for the resolution of each test.
4.6. Only answers posted timely and according to the OBAP schedule will be accepted on
the platform.
4.7. Questions can not be appelead.
4.8. Tutors are going to develop parallel activities during the students sole activities on the
fourth stage.
5. PARTICIPATION IN PRESENTIAL STAGE
5.1. Fifty secondary vocational education teams, and ten post-secondary vocational
education teams, both classified according to 4.1.3.1 item, are going to participate in the
fourth stage presential phase.
5.2. The following teams will have borne their travel to the final stage:
5.2.1. The best secondary vocational education tem of each of the Union regions
(Midwest, Northeast, North, Southeast and South).
5.2.2. The five best overall scored secondary vocational educational teams.
5.3. Other teams qualified for the presential stage should seek their own means for
bearing travellings and other expenses.
4. 5.4. Finalists are responsable for providing all the documents required for participating in
the finals.
5.5. Finalists must submit all supporting documentation required by the accreditation for
the finals.
6. RESULTS AND CLASSIFICATION
6.1. OBAP organizers are in charge with the task of generating results and classification.
6.2. After the end of the third stage, on August 30, 2012, it will be available on OBAP
homepage (www.ifsuldeminas.edu.br/obap) a list ranking each team, with their scores in
each stage.
6.3. The second phase of stage four will have a jury composed of technical professionals
invited by the organizing team.
6.3.1. Jury’s decision will be sovereign and can not be appelead.
6.4. The final result is calculated as following:

7. AWARDS
7.1.All the teams will receive a certificate of participation.
7.2. The award and classification will be made according to the sum of the results of all
phases and stages of OBAP.
7.3. The fifteen best secondary vocational education teams will receive medals, being 5
bronze medals; 5 silver medals; and 5 gold medals. Post-secondary vocational education
tems will also receive medals, being 3 bronze medals; 2 silver medals; and 1 gold medal.
7.4. The best case study will receive an special award.
7.5. The three best teams in general, whether secondary or post-secondary vocational
education, will receive trophies.
5. 7.6. The best team in general will be invited to participate in the IESO 2013 (see item 8
bellow).
7.7. The prizes for the other teams will be distributed according to resources and
partnerships availability. IFSULDEMINAS are to be liable just for that IFSULDEMINAS has
commited itself.
8. PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL EVENT
8.1. The champion team, whether secondary or post-secondary vocational education,
shall be invited to represent Brazil in IESO (International Earth Science Olympiad).
8.1.1. The Organizing Comitte, at their discretion and considering the individual ranking,
may invite members from the five best teams to join the international competition.
8.2. The followings are conditions for participation in IESO team:
8.2.1 Participation in International Earth Science Olympiad - IESO is subject to its rules,
usually available at http://ieso.or.kr/
8.2.1.1. Participants must be secondary or post-secondary vocational education regular
students and should be aged under 18 years on 1st July the year when the Olympics
happens.
8.2.2. Participants must attend classes and trainings the Organizing Comitte or their
partners may offer.
8.2.3. Participants must attain 70% or more in preparation tests.
8.3. Team's participation will be subject to full compliance with the standards here
established.
8.4. OBAP Organization shall seek fundings in order to bear team’s members training,
preparatory courses for IESO. If these fundings are not collected, team’s members should
seek their own means for bearing training and other expenses.
