3. A Word From Elaine
Imagine there are three computer shops in your city. You need a new laptop
but you have no idea which shop is the best. What do you do? You google the
three shops of course.
1. O‟Carrolls Technology only has a few listings in online shop guides and
no website.
2. SuperTech has a website but it looks pretty bad and hasn’t been
updated in years.
3. CleanTech has a great website, they write regularly about PC, Mac and
mobile tips and they display a lot of their products on their site.
4. A Word From Elaine
In all probability you’ll visit the one with the best website when you drive into
town. If you haven’t built a website before it can all seem a bit daunting… so
here is my handy guide to build a website – to showcase your apps, to advertise
your business, to start a blog - EXACTLY like how I built this website.
The good news is:
1. Setting up a new website is EASY.
2. You do not need to be a programmer.
3. Once you’re website is up and running, I have a great resource to help you
keep up to speed with any small changes and updates you will need to do.
6. Website Name
So first up, you need to buy a name. I usually buy a .com name as it’s what
most people are used to. If you want your website focused on one country
then it can make sense to buy a domain for that specific country. You can
buy a domain usually for one year or more and they are pretty cheap. The
fun part is thinking about what name you want! You can check out what
domain names are available here.
WordPress is one of the most popular (and best!) software programs you
can use to make your website. It’s really easy to use, and its free. All the
websites I’ve made have used wordpress, including this one.
8. Website Hosting
Next, once you have decided on your website name, you are going to
need some space on a server where you can put all the
files, pictures, blog, videos, etc that will be on your website. This is called
‘hosting’. I use doteasy for all of my website hosting and I can say they are
really good, my sites rarely go down and in 10 years I have never had a
problem with them.
I always get ‘unlimited hosting’ with doteasy, as this supports everything that
wordpress needs to work correctly. Right now, for $48 you can get unlimited
hosting for one year and a free domain name. That’s pretty good value.
9. How To Set Up Wordpress
Its Easier Than You Think!
10. How To Set Up
Wordpress
Once you buy your name &
hosting, it can take up to 24
hours to get access to your
site. They will send you an
email with all your login info.
The next step is to set up
wordpress. Login to the
Doteasy site. Click on ‘Site
Admin Panel’.
11. On the next page, scroll right down to the bottom and click on the
‘WordPress’ button. Then click on the blue INSTALL button.
12. How To Set Up Wordpress
“In Directory” – Delete the „wp‟ text.
“Site Name” – Enter your site name.
“Site Description” – Enter your site description.
“Admin Username” – Make up one and do not forget it.
“Admin Password” – Write this down and remember it.
“Admin Email” – Put in your email address.
And that’s it! Just hit the install button and your site will be live in minutes.
Do The Following
14. Which Wordpress Theme Is The Best?
Once you have wordpress installed, the next step is to choose a theme that
you like. A theme includes what colours your website will use and how it will
be laid out. There are lots of free themes you can find in wordpress.
If you are an app developer and looking for something to showcase your
apps, here are some really nice wordpress themes.
