4. • In February 1, 1814, Mayon Volcano began its most
violent and deadly eruption to date. During the
eruption, some 1,200 people took refuge in the
stone church of Cagsawa. Unfortunately, all
perished when lahar and pyroplastic flows
engulfed the church. Only the belfry of the
Cagsawa church remains as a grim and silent
reminder of that fateful day. For almost two
hundred years, it has withstood the test of time
and the elements to become one of the most
recognizable landmark of Municipality of Daraga.

7. Mount Vesuvius, on the west coast of Italy, is
the only active volcano on mainland Europe.
It is best known because of the eruption in
A.D. 79 that destroyed the city of Pompeii.
Mount Vesuvius is considered to be one of
the most dangerous volcanoes in the world
due to the large population of the city of
Naples and the surrounding towns on the
slopes nearby.
8. DANGERS TODAY
Mt. Vesuvius is still active today. It is the
only active volcano on the European
mainland. Its last eruption happened in
1944. The danger is that over 2 million
people live near Vesuvius and may be in
danger. I think that the reason that they
still live there is fertile soil.
