Poster photography, editing & drafting
1. POSTER PHOTOGRAPHY, EDITING &
DRAFTING
Presented on this slide shows the
photographs I took and considered to use
for my poster as well as the editing and
drafting stages.
3. PHOTOGRAPHY ANALYSIS
I opted to go for a shot like this as it
represents the hierarchy that will be
present in the film trailer. I think it
will resemble it very well and will
show a strong link once finally
completed.
The next couple of slides will show the analysis of the photographs that were
taken. It’ll explain why it was taken how it was (composition, location etc.) and
possibly the plans I may have for them regarding editing and drafting.
I believe a shot like this strongly
relates to the plot. I would say this
as the word “strapped” in street
terms means that you are in a
possession of a gun, if caught with
one it’s highly likely you’ll be facing
a prison sentence. I think having
the actors behind a somewhat
caged fence resembles that and it
also resembles guilt in all of them.
Using an image such as this I think
would be good for my magazine
poster as power and passion is
represented through it which
closely relates to the plot synopsis
as there’s a choice to make. Having
it as a poster I think will be effective
as here are many editing techniques
that I could possibly use in order to
have this poster stand out and make
a statement.
4. This photograph was taken with the
intention to merge it with another in
order to make a portrait poster. I had
his in mind as it will tell more about
the film rather than being so
ambiguous.
I took this photo in order to
resemble the mug shot
photographs that are taken in a
police station once the offender
has been charged, so it gives off a
sense of what the film trailer may
really be about.
Considering the plot of the trailer I
would say this relates to it well as
one of the characters is leaning
forwards whilst the other is
relaxing which can show a sense of
power and domination.
Lastly, this photograph was taken as again it has that somewhat mug shot
look to it as if the person has been found guilty, which closely relates to
the story line. Secondly it does show a dominating and confident
personality as the character is staring right into the camera and his hands
are in his pockets as though he hasn’t got a care in the world. I believe
this will translate well as a poster because it gives off the style and
impression I’m looking for regarding my film poster.
5. EDITING & DRAFTING
The oncoming slides will show evidence of photo editing with the use of Picasa 3 as
well as drafting with the use of Adobe Photoshop CS6 using screens shots. It’ll also
include a step by step explanation of the tools that were used, why and how it’s
made the photograph more effective. Although I have included a various amount
of photographs in the first 3 slides I haven’t opted to use all of them for photo
editing or drafting.
6. For the first stages of editing this photograph I tampered with a few of the basic settings. I started off by
straightening the photo and it hadn’t been taken straight. Next I added a saturation in order to give it more colour
rather than it looking dull and lastly I messed around with the highlights and shadows again to exaggerate the
lighter and darker areas of the photograph.
Then I decided to use a range of focal filters such as a soft focus, focal black and white, vignette as well as vignette with
cross process. I done this as there is a main focus point of the plot and I wanted to make it evident in the trailer to when
putting the two together no complications arise about weather they relate or not. It’s also another way of me showing the
audience who the possible main characters may be.
Lastly I opted to include a colour gradient and I chose the colour red to portray a
various amount of expressions such as anger, passion, love etc as these will all be
present in the film trailer.
7. 1. Firstly I started by including the release date on
the poster as this is a popular convention of film
posters. The I included a masthead as again it’s one
of the conventions of a poster. I opted to use the font
‘Invisible Killer’ as I believe it works well with the
image as the stripes that descend at the bottom of
the font correspond with the image as well as the
concept of bars which is what I tried to create. In
order to finalise the masthead I added some shade
as well as a glow behind it in order for it to make
more of a statement.
2. I then opted for a bit of change regarding the
second draft I created for this image. I decided to
keep the white masthead the same as I think it
contrasts well with the background as well as the
vignette effect; although I chose an alternative font as
this was a development from the previous draft. After
I copy and pasted star icons as my intentions were to
include review comments for the film so once that
was done I then selected all the white area and using
the drop down select tab clicked similar, which then
highlighted all of the other white areas for me. I then
cut it away so I was only left with the black stars. Next
I scaled them down and copied them so they were all
accurate and lastly I began to add quotes that would
entice the target market to want to watch the trailer
and underneath the stars included the company that
made this quote to show it’s from a trustworthy
source. Once that was complete I opted to re arrange
some of the lettering and add more colour as I though
it looked better this way.
8.
9. Similar to the previous photograph I started off by tampering with
the highlights and shadows as I wanted to bring out and
exaggerate as much of the tones within the image as possible.
For these two images I decided to use a focus so it is clear to the
target market who’s important in this trailer in addition who the
pressure is on more. I’ve also opted to focus on him using the
focal black and white tool singling him out to show that he’s
confused about things because he’s the only one that in colour
and the rest are in black and white.
10. 1. For the image with just the soft focus as
it’s a rather plain image I decided to use a
font that would bring it back to life so I used
the font ‘Scorched Earth’ and presented it in
a red colour again similar to the previous
image involving the colour red connotes
many feelings such as passion, love and
anger ect. Although I didn’t feel as though it
went with it very well so I changed the font
to ‘Bullet Campus’ as it’s suitable because it
shows a divide and within the storyline there
is a divide between two families. I coloured it
grey as this gives it a gritty feel and I also
added a shadow to make it more dramatic
and stand out on the page. Also present are
the actors names at the top of the poster.
2. For the second draft I used the other
focused image. To act as a contrast unlike
the previous draft I used the colour red
against the black and white background in
order to add a vivid effect to it, I also opted
to include a shadow to the font. I decided
on a font like this as I didn’t want to take
too much focus away from the image and as
it was red it stood out so there will be no
problem in loosing that on the poster; it’s
sleek and stylish but powerful at the same
time. Finally, I added the release date to the
poster.
11.
12. Lastly for my last photograph I again like the previous two photographs messed around with the highlights and the shadows
in order to give it a more dramatic look. I also experimented with a grey scale effect and a cross process effect as it gave the
image a lot more depth and made it much more interesting and creative.
I then used an internet software called Pixlr which allowed me to be creative as possible. I used masks which are use in the
first two pictures. I think these creative filters especially using the colour red gives it a lot of meaning. I also used other
filters that exaggerated the tones within the photograph and improved the skin tones of the actor.
To edit this image I also used a phone application called Diptic. I
used it as it allowed me to mirror the photograph which I think is
effective and creative and very different from all of the other
photo edits.
13. 1. Regarding this image I used the edited
version rather than the original. Firstly I
added the title strapped to the poster I
done this as this is a main convention of a
poster for it to have a title. In addition I
decided to chose this particular font as it
shows a divide, which tells the audience
that there could be conflict within the
trailer. Next I decided to make it even more
creative my merging in another photograph.
I done this as it shows the target audience
more that could be included in the trailer
and gives them more of an idea about what
the film may be about just in case the
picture doesn't reveal it straight away.
2. For the second draft I completed I
opted to use the mirrored image as I fond
it rather interesting. After it was edited I
included the font ad allowed it to flow
down the middle of the page in order again
to act like a divide. Next I selected one side
of the image and added a Gaussian blur to
the image, I done this to represent the
character being an enemy of himself or
possibly his alter ego etc. After this was
done successfully I included all the other
basic information such as the release date
and the actors names.
