Barcelona has a population of 1.7 million people and is located on the northeast coast of Spain. Its major industries include services, finance, tourism, and real estate. Since hosting the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona has consistently increased its number of tourists and is now a top global destination. The hostel industry in Barcelona represents between 10-15% of the city's total overnight stays, with an estimated 5,000-6,000 hostel beds currently. Several new hostels are under construction, bringing 1,000-1,500 new beds online in 2013-2014.

14. THE HOSTEL SCENE IN
BARCELONA
Although hostels have a regulation in Catalonia, they are not by the Tourism
Board of Catalonia but regulated by the Youth Department. This means that we
are not in the city statistics, even when we represent between 10-15% of total
bednights in the city.
The “non official” hostels/apartments in the city had been increasing in the last
years.
In 2012 the Catalan Goverment is also studing to apply a “Touristic Tax” of 1€
per person per night.
